A Day of Peaks and Plates
Today was a day of conquering heights and indulging in the exquisite tastes that Lofoten has to offer. From the breathtaking views atop Andstabben to the culinary artistry at Lofoten Food Studio, it was a day that fed both our adventurous spirits and our appetites. Greta and I set out early, eager to experience another facet of this incredible archipelago.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Holmen Lofoten. The reviews I'd read painted a picture of a fairy-tale setting, and they weren't wrong. The spread was a feast for the senses, with local delicacies and freshly baked bread. I particularly enjoyed the selection of Norwegian cheeses; there's something about the tangy, rich flavors that just sets the tone for a day of exploration. Greta, ever the coffee aficionado, was in her element with the strong, aromatic brew that seemed to cut through the crisp morning air.
Fueled and ready, we made our way towards Å, the last village on the E10 road, and the starting point for our hike to Andstabben viewpoint. The drive itself was stunning, with the road winding along fjords and past quaint fishing villages. I couldn't resist pulling over a couple of times to capture the scenery with my camera; the way the early morning light painted the mountains was just too good to pass up. As we drove, we discussed our plans for tomorrow, considering the hike to Steinetind and the allure of Molneva Waterfall.
The trailhead for Andstabben is located near Ågvatnet lake, a serene body of water that reflects the surrounding peaks like a mirror. The initial part of the trail was a bit confusing, with a maze of paths crisscrossing the landscape. But with a bit of perseverance, we found the right track and started our ascent. The climb was moderate to steep, with some slippery sections, but the views along the way were more than worth the effort. We passed through boulder fields and climbed over rock slabs, each step revealing a new perspective of the dramatic landscape. I was glad I'd packed my hiking boots; they provided the necessary grip and support on the uneven terrain.

Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are the ones that challenge us, pushing us to discover hidden strengths and unveiling breathtaking beauty along the way.
As we gained altitude, the views became increasingly spectacular. Ågvatnet lake sparkled below us, and the vast expanse of the Norwegian Sea stretched out to the horizon. The islands of Værøy rose in the distance, adding to the sense of scale and grandeur. The wind picked up as we neared the summit, but the panoramic vista was simply mesmerizing. We spent a good hour at the top, soaking in the scenery and snapping photos. Greta, with her architect's eye, was particularly fascinated by the geological formations and the way the landscape had been shaped by the elements over millennia. I, on the other hand, was content to simply gaze out at the seemingly endless expanse of nature.
After descending from Andstabben, our stomachs began to rumble, reminding us that it was time for lunch. We drove to Livland Gård, a charming farm-to-table restaurant known for its traditional Norwegian cuisine. The setting was idyllic, with the restaurant nestled amidst rolling green fields and grazing sheep. We opted for their famous plank, a platter of locally produced delicacies, including smoked fish, cured meats, and artisanal cheeses. Each bite was a burst of flavor, a testament to the quality of the ingredients and the skill of the chefs. Greta particularly enjoyed the Viking lamb, a hearty dish that perfectly captured the rustic essence of Lofoten. I was intrigued by the restaurant's history and their commitment to sustainable practices. It's inspiring to see businesses that prioritize local sourcing and environmental stewardship.
Before dinner, we decided to explore The Lofoten Store in the afternoon. This wasn't just a shopping trip; it was an opportunity to delve deeper into the local culture and find unique mementos of our journey. The store itself was a treasure trove of handcrafted jewelry, traditional Norwegian designs, and other locally made goods. I picked up a beautifully carved wooden figurine of a Viking ship, while Greta found a delicate silver necklace inspired by the patterns of the Northern Lights. We also took advantage of the store's tourist information services, gathering tips and recommendations for our remaining days in Lofoten. The staff were incredibly helpful, pointing us towards hidden gems and scenic viewpoints that we might otherwise have missed.
As evening approached, we made our way to Ballstad for our dinner reservation at Lofoten Food Studio. This was an experience I had been eagerly anticipating. The restaurant is a one-man show, with chef Roy Berglund crafting multi-course tasting menus inspired by the seasons of Lofoten. The atmosphere was intimate and cozy, with a communal dining counter that encouraged interaction among the guests. We struck up conversations with fellow travelers from around the world, sharing stories and experiences over glasses of wine.
The meal itself was a culinary masterpiece. Each dish was a work of art, showcasing the best of local produce and seafood. We savored king crab, langoustine, scallops, and Lofoten lamb, each ingredient perfectly prepared and presented. Chef Berglund's sauces were particularly noteworthy, with each one adding a unique layer of flavor to the dish. The wine pairings were also excellent, complementing the food perfectly. It was an immersive and unforgettable dining experience, one that truly captured the essence of Lofoten's culinary scene.
After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll along the harbor in Ballstad, enjoying the tranquil atmosphere and the soft glow of the midnight sun. The air was crisp and clean, and the only sounds were the gentle lapping of the waves and the distant calls of seabirds. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day, a moment of quiet reflection amidst the grandeur of Lofoten.
As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences we've had today. From the stunning views atop Andstabben to the exquisite tastes at Lofoten Food Studio, it's been a day that has nourished both our bodies and our souls. And as we look ahead to tomorrow's adventures, with plans to hike Steinetind and visit Molneva Waterfall, I know that the magic of Lofoten will continue to unfold before us.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Steinetind and Molneva Waterfall, and perhaps enjoy a relaxing evening at Anker Brygge Bryggebaren. I'm already looking forward to sharing those experiences with you all. Good night from Lofoten!
