Solo Adventure in Seydisfjordur: Exploring Iceland's Hidden Gem
Day 3: Art, History, and Fjords: A Day of Discovery in Seydisfjordur
Exploring the cultural heart of Seydisfjordur: monuments, art, and local flavors on a solo journey through Iceland's scenic east.
A Saturday Stroll Through Seydisfjordur's Soul
Today was all about immersing myself in the heart of Seydisfjordur. I wanted to absorb the town's unique blend of history, art, and natural beauty. It's amazing how much character a place can hold, and I was eager to uncover its layers. I set out with my camera, ready to capture the essence of this charming Icelandic town.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Hótel Aldan. The buffet was a delightful spread of fresh pastries, local cheeses, and strong Icelandic coffee. Fuelled up, I was ready to explore. It’s funny, I’ve always been a breakfast person, and Hótel Aldan didn't disappoint, especially with the buffet offering a taste of local flavors. It reminded me of the times Jasmine and I would experiment with new breakfast recipes back home in Toronto, though I must admit, Icelandic cheeses are a different ball game altogether!

My first stop was the T. Larusson Monument. It stands as a tribute to an influential figure in the community, and as I stood there, the views of the surrounding fjords and mountains were simply breathtaking. The fresh mountain air and serene beauty of the landscape made it a perfect spot for reflection. I learned that T. Larusson was a significant local figure, and the monument not only honors him but also encapsulates the spirit and history of Seydisfjordur. The monument is easily accessible and is often included in local walking tours, providing tourists with insights into the area's heritage and the stories behind its historical figures. Seydisfjordur itself is known for its colorful wooden houses and vibrant arts scene, creating a delightful atmosphere that complements the significance of the T. Larusson Monument.

Monuments are not just stone and metal; they are echoes of the past, whispering stories of resilience and inspiration.
Next on my list was the Sculpture of a telephone booth. This quirky art piece is a nod to the importance of communication and connection. It's a vintage phone booth placed on the side of a small road heading north of Seyðisfjörður. The sculpture was created by Icelandic artist Guðjón Ketilsson in 2006, the centennial of the first international telegraph cable in Iceland. Inside the booth, a small plaque reads “Hvernig gengur?” which translates to “How's it going?” I found myself pondering the connections that bind us, both near and far. It was a thought-provoking moment, standing there in the crisp Icelandic air. The sculpture stands out against the backdrop of Seydisfjordur's stunning landscapes, characterized by its colorful wooden houses and breathtaking fjord views. Visitors can take memorable photographs with this iconic piece, making it a perfect stop for those exploring the artistic side of Iceland.

Lunch was at Fancy Sheep, a culinary gem in Seydisfjordur. I opted for the fish and chips, and it was absolutely divine. The batter was perfectly crispy, and the fish was incredibly fresh. The restaurant itself had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, making it a perfect spot to relax and enjoy a meal. It's run by a friendly Czech and Polish couple who have infused their passion for food into every dish they create. The menu boasts an array of delectable options, with a particular emphasis on fresh fish that reflects the rich marine bounty of Iceland. I overheard some other tourists raving about the lamb burgers, so I might have to try that next time. It reminded me of the small food trucks back in Bermuda, serving up local favorites with a smile.

After lunch, I decided to explore Blóðberg, a local shop known for its unique Icelandic designs. It’s located inside the oldest house in Seyðisfjörður. Erna, the owner, has mastered the art of cool and cozy with her curated selection. From trendy wool sweaters to locally made ceramics, fur accessories and more. I picked up a beautiful hand-knitted scarf as a souvenir for Jasmine, something to remind her of Iceland's charm. The shop itself was a treasure trove of local crafts, and I could have spent hours browsing through the unique items on display. It was opened by Erna Lilju Helgadóttir in the living room of the home she lives in just about a year ago.

As the afternoon waned, I found myself drawn to the colorful houses that line the streets of Seydisfjordur. Each building seemed to have its own story to tell, and I couldn't resist capturing their vibrant facades with my camera. Seydisfjordur is a town ringed by a rainbow of tin houses and dramatic snowcapped peaks. One of its best-known features is the Rainbow Street in the heart of town, which can best be described as a beautiful community project. On a sunny day in the summer of 2016 the town's residents got the idea to paint Norðurgata, a cute street in need of some love and restoration.
Dinner was at Salt Café & Bistro, located in nearby Egilsstaðir. Though technically not in Seydisfjordur, the short drive was worth it. The bistro had a warm and inviting ambiance, and the menu featured a variety of dishes made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients. I opted for a traditional Icelandic lamb dish, and it was cooked to perfection. This inviting bistro captures the essence of Icelandic cuisine while also embracing international influences, making it an ideal spot for tourists to indulge in delicious meals. The warm ambiance and friendly service create a welcoming atmosphere where guests can unwind after exploring the stunning landscapes of East Iceland.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm struck by the sense of community that permeates Seydisfjordur. From the colorful houses to the local shops and restaurants, there's a palpable feeling of warmth and connection. This solo journey has been a chance for personal reflection, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to immerse myself in the beauty and culture of Iceland.
Tomorrow, I plan to venture out to the Seyðisfjörður útsýnisstaður viewpoint and the Walter Mitty longboard viewpoint, hoping to capture even more breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes. I might even check out Feiti Fíllinn - BAR NIGHTCLUB in the evening, if I'm feeling adventurous. It's all about embracing the unexpected and making the most of this incredible experience.
And, as a side note, I really need to remember to buy a rain jacket. The weather here can be quite unpredictable, and I don't want to be caught in a downpour again! Also, a power adapter for Iceland would be a lifesaver. Charging my camera and phone has been a bit of a challenge.
Until tomorrow, bless from Seydisfjordur!
P.S. I can't wait to share more stories and photos from my Icelandic adventure. Stay tuned!
