Day 2: Delving into Seydisfjordur's Past and Present: Museums, Waterfalls, and Local Flavors
Exploring Seydisfjordur's history at the Technical Museum, hiking to Vestdalsfossar, and savoring local cuisine on a solo Icelandic adventure.
A Day of Discovery in Seydisfjordur
Today was all about immersing myself in the heart of Seydisfjordur, a town that effortlessly blends its rich history with stunning natural beauty. It's amazing how much you can pack into a single day when you're on a solo adventure! I was really excited to explore the local culture and landscapes, and I definitely wasn't disappointed.
My day started with a hearty breakfast at The Old Apothecary. I was hoping they would serve breakfast, but I found out that they don't. I ended up going to a nearby cafe. The town was just waking up, and the smell of fresh coffee filled the air. I enjoyed a simple but satisfying meal, fueling up for the day's adventures. The quiet morning was perfect for planning my route and mentally preparing for the day ahead. It gave me a chance to reflect on how far I'd come already, both geographically and personally, on this solo journey.

First up on the itinerary was the Technical Museum of East Iceland. This museum is a treasure trove of information about the region's industrial and technological history. I learned that Seydisfjordur was once a hub for innovation, boasting Iceland's first telegraph station. The interactive exhibits brought the past to life, showcasing how technology transformed the lives of the people here. It was fascinating to see the old equipment and imagine the ingenuity of the early pioneers. The museum also serves as a heritage center for the town, offering insights into the local culture and traditions. I was particularly moved by the stories of resilience and adaptation in the face of challenging conditions.

Sometimes, the most profound discoveries are made not in grand monuments, but in the quiet corners of history, where innovation and perseverance intertwine.
After the museum, I decided to embrace the natural beauty of Seydisfjordur with a hike to Vestdalsfossar. The trail was invigorating, with each step offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the fjord below. The waterfalls themselves were stunning. The cascading water created a soothing melody as it plunged into the pools below. I spent a long time just sitting there, soaking in the tranquility and capturing photos of the scenery. The hike was moderately challenging. I was glad I had my hiking boots with me. The views made it all worth it. I even saw some local wildlife along the way, adding to the charm of the experience.

For lunch, I stopped by The Filling Station / Seyðisfjörður Food Coop. This quirky little spot is known for its fresh, organic offerings. I opted for a chef's choice selection, which turned out to be a delicious fresh fish dish with plenty of healthy veggies. It was the perfect fuel after my hike. I loved the laid-back atmosphere of the place. I chatted with some locals while I ate, learning more about the town's culture and community. The Filling Station is more than just a place to eat. It's a gathering spot where people connect and share stories.

As evening approached, I treated myself to dinner at Norð Austur - Sushi & Bar. The name of the restaurant, I learned, comes from the unloving wind direction: North East. Who would have thought I could find incredible sushi in a remote Icelandic town? The fish was incredibly fresh, sourced locally from the nearby rivers and sea. The sushi was prepared with a modern twist, blending Japanese traditions with local ingredients. I savored each bite, enjoying the cozy ambiance of the restaurant. The staff were friendly and attentive. They made me feel right at home. It was a delightful culinary experience that I highly recommend to anyone visiting Seydisfjordur.

To cap off the night, I decided to check out Kaffi Lára El Grillo Bar. This family-run establishment is a local institution, known for its own brewed beer and Icelandic grilled dishes. I ordered a pint of their house lager, El Grillo. I learned that the beer is named after a British oil ship that was bombed in the fjord during World War II. The atmosphere was lively, with a mix of locals and tourists enjoying the music and camaraderie. I felt like I was truly experiencing the heart of Seydisfjordur. I was told that Kaffi Lára is located in a 100 year old timber house, which used to be the home of Lára, who cooked fish and chips for British fishermen. The founder of Kaffi Lára, Eyþór þórisson, named the pub after Lára, who allegedly visited Eyþór in his dreams and told him to take good care of the house as it still was her home even in her afterlife.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the T. Larusson Monument and the Sculpture of a Telephone Booth. I'm also looking forward to visiting Blóðberg, a local shop. I'm excited to see what other hidden gems Seydisfjordur has in store for me. As I walked back to Hótel Snæfell, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this incredible solo adventure. I'm so glad I decided to come here. It's a reminder that sometimes the best experiences are found off the beaten path, in places that offer a unique blend of culture, history, and natural beauty. And as I prepare for another day of exploration, I'm filled with a sense of excitement and anticipation for what lies ahead. I think I will check out the Skaftfell Art Center, and see if there are any art exhibitions. I also want to check out the Dieter Roth section of the center. I heard he lived and worked in Seydisfjordur in the last decade of his life. I'm looking forward to seeing what tomorrow brings!
