A Day Immersed in Spirituality

Today was a day for the soul, a pilgrimage into the heart of Franciscan history and spirituality. Leaving the familiar streets of Perugia behind, I ventured to Assisi, a town synonymous with Saint Francis, eager to explore its sacred sites and soak in the profound sense of peace that permeates the air. It was a day of reflection, a journey into the life and legacy of a man who changed the world with his message of love, poverty, and devotion.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at L'Officina in Perugia. The restaurant is known for its Italian cuisine, so I enjoyed a delightful meal to fuel my exploration. After breakfast, I took a train to Assisi.

Assisi: A Medieval Wonder

Arriving in Assisi, I was immediately struck by the town's beauty. Perched on a hilltop, framed by the rolling Umbrian hills and the forests of Monte Subasio, Assisi is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Italy's best-preserved medieval towns. The town is built in a similar style using limestone, which gives it a distinctive and unified appearance. As the birthplace of Saint Francis and Saint Catherine of Siena, Assisi is deeply intertwined with religion. Monks in brown robes and pilgrims fill the streets, adding to the spiritual ambiance.

My first stop was the Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli, located in the plains below Assisi. This magnificent basilica houses the Porziuncola, the small church where St. Francis embraced his calling. The sheer size of the basilica, the seventh-largest church in Christendom, is quite striking, especially considering its connection to Francis's dedication to simplicity.

Stepping inside, I felt an immediate sense of reverence. The Porziuncola, nestled within the grand basilica, felt like a sanctuary within a sanctuary. It was here that Francis renounced his worldly possessions and embraced a life of poverty and service. The humble chapel served as a poignant reminder of the saint's commitment to simplicity amidst the grandeur of the basilica.

Start by doing what's necessary; then do what's possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.

The Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli was constructed to accommodate the numerous pilgrims who came to visit the Porziuncola, the chapel of Saint Mary of the Angels. Pope Pius IV initiated the construction in 1569, entrusting the project to Galeazzo Alessi, although it wasn't finished until 1667. The bell tower was added in 1684, but its twin was never finished. The basilica suffered damage during the 1832 earthquake, which caused the vault of the central nave and part of the lateral nave to collapse. The facade, which had previously been renovated in the neoclassical style, was rebuilt in the neo-Baroque style in 1928.

While I was there, I learned that the Solennità del Perdono di Assisi (Solemnity of the Pardon of Assisi) will be held from July 29 to August 4, 2025. This celebration commemorates the Pardon of Assisi, also known as the Indulgence of the Porziuncola. According to the legend, St. Francis asked Pope Honorius III for a unique indulgence for all those who visit the Porziuncola.

Eremo delle Carceri: A Retreat into Silence

Leaving the Basilica, I journeyed to the Eremo delle Carceri, a hermitage nestled on the slopes of Mount Subasio. The name Carceri refers to the small caves where monks retreated for prayer and meditation. The narrow, winding road leading to the hermitage offered breathtaking views of the Umbrian countryside. As I ascended, the air grew cooler, and the sounds of the town faded away, replaced by the rustling of leaves and the chirping of birds.

The Eremo delle Carceri is a sanctuary of peace and contemplation. It was here that St. Francis and his followers sought solitude, connecting with nature and deepening their spiritual understanding. The hermitage is located at 791 m above sea level, amidst a beautiful holm oak wood.

I explored the small chapel and the caves where the monks once lived, imagining their simple lives dedicated to prayer and reflection. The silence was profound, broken only by the occasional bird song. I took a walk through the holm oak wood, following the paths that St. Francis himself would have walked. The experience was deeply moving, a reminder of the importance of solitude and contemplation in our busy lives.

Assisi's Culinary Charm

After a day of spiritual exploration, I returned to Assisi's town center for a late lunch at Locanda del Morlacchi. This intimate restaurant, known for its refined, traditional Umbrian cuisine, provided a welcome respite. I savored dishes featuring local truffles, a regional specialty, while enjoying the cozy atmosphere of the restaurant.

Marla: A Nightcap in Perugia

As the sun began to set, I made my way back to Perugia, where I decided to end my day with a visit to Marla, a bar known for its live music and cool vibe. Although I was tired from my travels, I decided to stop by for a quick drink. Marla is owned by Andreas of Dempseys and is known for its live music and tandem language nights. I enjoyed the bar's atmosphere and the attentive staff.

Tomorrow marks the last day of my solo adventure in Perugia. I plan to visit Castiglione del Lago, Lago Trasimeno, and Isola Maggiore. I'm also hoping to get some shopping done at Luisa Spagnoli Perugia Vannucci.

Today was a reminder of the power of faith and the importance of seeking moments of peace and reflection. As I prepare to leave Perugia, I carry with me the lessons of St. Francis, a renewed appreciation for simplicity, and a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the spiritual heart of Umbria.
