Orvieto: Above and Below

Today was a day of incredible contrasts, a journey through time both above and beneath the enchanting city of Orvieto. From exploring ancient underground tunnels to scaling a medieval tower and gazing upon a breathtaking cathedral, it was a day filled with history, culture, and stunning views. I started my day with a hearty breakfast, ready to immerse myself in everything Orvieto had to offer.

My day began with breakfast at Cupa Cupa. It was a delightful way to start the morning, and I savored every bite. After breakfast, I made my way to the Orvieto Underground. The idea of exploring a hidden city beneath the city was intriguing, and I couldn't wait to see what secrets it held.

The Orvieto Underground tour was nothing short of fascinating. Descending into the depths, I discovered a labyrinth of over 1200 caves that have evolved through centuries. Originally, these caves provided the Etruscans with protection from invaders. They also served as escape routes during World War II. Our guide explained how the caves were used as workshops, olive oil mills, and even dovecotes, where monks raised pigeons for food and fertilizer. Peeking into the ancient wells, some seemingly bottomless, was a highlight. It was amazing to see how this underground network has been used throughout history, adapting to the needs of each era.

The layers of history beneath Orvieto reveal a resilient spirit, a testament to the ingenuity and adaptability of its people.

Emerging from the depths, blinking in the sunlight, it was time to ascend to new heights. My next stop was the Torre del Moro. This medieval tower stands at the intersection of Orvieto's four historic districts, offering a 360-degree view of the city and surrounding countryside.

The climb to the top of Torre del Moro was invigorating. The narrow, winding staircase with over 200 steps tested my stamina, but the panoramic views from the top were well worth the effort. From this vantage point, I could see the intricate layout of Orvieto's streets, the rolling hills of Umbria, and distant landmarks. The tower itself is a piece of history, originally built in the 13th century as a watchtower and defensive structure. Learning about its past while taking in the breathtaking scenery was an unforgettable experience. I could see the Duomo from a unique perspective, almost at eye level, making me feel like I was floating among the clouds.

After descending from the tower, it was time for lunch. I chose Ristorante Settimo Sigillo, known for its refined Umbrian cuisine. The restaurant was a bit hidden, tucked away on a small street near the Duomo. The elegant ambiance and the promise of authentic flavors drew me in. I savored a delicious meal, trying local specialties and enjoying the attentive service.

With renewed energy, I headed to the Duomo di Orvieto. This magnificent cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, is a masterpiece of Romanesque-Gothic architecture. Its golden mosaics and intricate façade are truly stunning. The Duomo's construction began in 1290, commissioned by Pope Nicholas IV to commemorate the Miracle of Bolsena.

Inside, the Duomo was equally awe-inspiring. The Chapel of San Brizio, adorned with frescoes by Luca Signorelli, depicted scenes of the Last Judgment with vivid detail. The Corporal Chapel housed the sacred linen from the Miracle of Bolsena, a tangible connection to the cathedral's history. I spent hours admiring the artistry and soaking in the spiritual atmosphere. The bronze sculptures representing the four Evangelists added to the grandeur of the space.

After my visit to the Duomo, I decided to do some shopping at Christy Perugia. I browsed through the clothing and accessories, finding a few unique items to bring home as souvenirs. It was a nice way to unwind after a day of exploring, and I enjoyed the local atmosphere of the shop.

As evening approached, I made my way to Ristorante Dalla Bianca for dinner. I was ready for a relaxing meal after a full day of sightseeing. The restaurant offered a cozy ambiance and a menu filled with local specialties. I enjoyed a delicious dinner, savoring the flavors of Umbria and reflecting on the incredible experiences of the day.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Assisi, including the Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli and the Eremo delle Carceri. I am looking forward to another day of cultural immersion and exploration.

Today was a reminder of why I love solo travel. I was able to immerse myself in the history and culture of Orvieto at my own pace, discovering hidden gems and creating unforgettable memories. From the depths of the Orvieto Underground to the heights of Torre del Moro and the splendor of the Duomo, it was a day that will stay with me long after I leave this enchanting city. I am feeling grateful and inspired, ready for whatever adventures tomorrow may bring. I am also happy to have found some items at Christy Perugia.
