Immerse yourself in Florence's artistic heart with visits to iconic landmarks, savory meals, and a hidden speakeasy experience.
Florentine Echoes: A Day of Discovery
Today was a symphony of Florentine experiences, a blend of art, history, and, of course, delightful food. Anjali, Arjun and I dove deep into the city's vibrant heart, soaking up the atmosphere and creating memories that I know we'll cherish for years to come.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Buca San Giovanni Frigest. The restaurant was conveniently located close to the Duomo. I had heard good things about their allergy awareness, and I was not disappointed. After showing them my allergy card, they assured me that they could prepare my meal safely. I had a delicious vegan frittata, which was flavorful and filling, the perfect start to a day of exploration. Anjali opted for a traditional cornetto and cappuccino, while Arjun went for a more substantial breakfast of scrambled eggs and bacon. Fully fueled, we were ready to take on the day's adventures.

Our first stop was the Basilica di Santa Croce. From the outside, the striking marble frontage was stunning, but it was the interior that truly captivated us. The sheer size of the basilica was impressive, and the light streaming through the stained-glass windows created a serene atmosphere. We wandered through the chapels, marveling at the frescoes by Giotto and other masters. The artistry and detail were breathtaking, and I found myself lost in the stories they told. It was especially moving to stand before the tombs of Michelangelo, Galileo, and Machiavelli, paying homage to these giants of Italian history. The newly restored Cappella dei Pazzi, designed by Brunelleschi, was a particular highlight, with its Renaissance architecture showcasing perfect harmony and balance.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Leaving the Basilica, we made our way to the Loggia dei Lanzi, an open-air sculpture gallery that stands in stark contrast to the Palazzo Vecchio's severe architecture. The Loggia was teeming with history. Originally built to house public ceremonies, it later served as a shelter for Cosimo I's German mercenary pikemen, the Landsknechts, which is how it got its name. Now, it's home to a collection of impressive Renaissance and Roman sculptures. Arjun was particularly fascinated by Cellini's bronze statue of Perseus holding Medusa's head. We also admired Giambologna's Rape of the Sabine Women, a dynamic and intricate sculpture that seemed to capture a moment of intense action. The Loggia felt like a living museum, where the stories of the past were etched in stone and bronze.

Lunch was a much-anticipated affair at All’Antico Vinaio. I had heard so much about their sandwiches, and the queue snaking down the street only heightened my expectations. Fortunately, the line moved quickly, and soon we were face-to-face with a dazzling array of fillings. The schiacciata bread, a Tuscan flatbread similar to focaccia, was the perfect canvas for the generous portions of meats, cheeses, and spreads. I opted for La Favolosa, a sandwich piled high with roast pork, pecorino cheese, and a spicy sauce. The combination of flavors was simply divine, and the bread was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Anjali chose La Toscana, filled with spicy Tuscan salami, pecorino cheese, and truffle honey, while Arjun went for The New Yorker, a roast beef sandwich with tomato, arugula, and porcini mushroom cream. Each sandwich was a masterpiece, and we devoured them with gusto, savoring every bite.

After lunch, we strolled over to the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence's town hall and a symbol of the city's power and history. The imposing fortress-like exterior gave way to opulent interiors filled with Renaissance art and artifacts. We climbed the Arnolfo Tower for panoramic views of Florence, with the Duomo and the Arno River stretching out before us. Inside, the Salone dei Cinquecento was awe-inspiring, with its massive frescoes depicting Florentine military victories. We also visited the Hall of Geographical Maps, marveling at the intricate maps of the world as it was known in the 16th century. The Palazzo Vecchio offered a glimpse into Florence's rich political and artistic history, a testament to the city's enduring legacy.

As evening approached, we sought out a different kind of cultural experience: a visit to Rasputin, a hidden speakeasy known for its expertly crafted cocktails. Finding the bar was an adventure in itself, as it's tucked away behind an unmarked door. Ringing the doorbell felt like stepping back in time, and we were soon ushered into a dimly lit, intimate space. The atmosphere was mysterious and sophisticated, with plush velvet seating and vintage décor. The bartender was a true mixologist, creating bespoke cocktails tailored to our tastes. I opted for a whiskey-based concoction with a hint of absinthe, while Anjali chose a gin-based drink with floral notes. Arjun, ever the adventurous one, tried a Japanese cocktail with soy sauce. The drinks were potent and delicious, and we savored them in the hushed ambiance of the bar. Rasputin was a perfect ending to our day, a secret world hidden in the heart of Florence.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Piazzale Michelangelo for panoramic views of the city and the Basilica di San Miniato al Monte, followed by some leather shopping. I am particularly excited about dinner at Ristorante Santa Elisabetta, which I have heard has great reviews. I am also looking forward to having breakfast at Cinto-Cucina In Torre and lunch at Casa del Vin Santo. I am sure we will have a wonderful time.
Today was a testament to Florence's enduring charm, a city that seamlessly blends art, history, and culinary delights. It was a day of discovery, a day of indulgence, and a day that I will always remember. As we walked back to the Strozzi Palace Hotel, the lights of Florence twinkling around us, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to share this experience with my family. I am sure tomorrow will be another great day.
