Day 11: A Fond Farewell to Florence: Reflecting on Renaissance Wonders
Discover the architectural marvels of Strozzi Palace, the serene beauty of Santa Maria Novella, and the culinary delights of Florence.
Ciao, Firenze! A Final Day of Discovery
As our Florentine adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've had as a family. Today, we soaked in the last drops of this Renaissance city, visiting historical landmarks, savoring delicious meals, and even squeezing in some shopping. It's amazing how much richness can be packed into a single day, and I'm eager to share the highlights with you.
Our day began, as many do in Florence, with a delightful breakfast. We headed to Saporium Firenze, a Michelin-starred restaurant, for a meal. The restaurant is centred around contemporary Tuscan cuisine and a farm-to-plate philosophy. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.

Palazzo Strozzi: A Testament to Rivalry and Ambition
Our first stop was the magnificent Palazzo Strozzi. This palace is a powerful symbol of the Strozzi family's ambition and rivalry with the Medici. Construction began in 1489, commissioned by Filippo Strozzi the Elder, who wanted to assert his family's prominence. The palace's history is as captivating as its architecture. The building of the Palazzo began in 1489 by Benedetto da Maiano. Filippo Strozzi wanted it to be the biggest and finest palazzo in Florence.

Walking through the Palazzo Strozzi, I couldn't help but marvel at the sheer scale and grandeur of the building. The rusticated stone facade, inspired by Palazzo Medici, exudes a sense of strength and timelessness. It's a testament to the power and influence the Strozzi family once held in Florence. The three crescent moons on the Strozzi coat-of-arms symbolize the family's aspiration to good fortune and their important role in the city's life. I was particularly impressed by the inner courtyard, a harmonious space that reflects the Renaissance ideals of symmetry and balance. I learned that the palace remained in the Strozzi family until 1937, after which it was purchased by an insurance company and eventually became a cultural venue.
Florence is like a treasure chest, overflowing with art, history, and culinary delights waiting to be discovered.
Arjun was fascinated by the history of the palace, especially the stories of family rivalries and political intrigue. Anjali admired the architectural details, pointing out the harmonious proportions and the intricate design of the windows. For me, as a chef, I appreciated the palace's connection to Florentine history and culture.
Basilica di Santa Maria Novella: A Sanctuary of Art and Faith
Next, we visited the Basilica di Santa Maria Novella. This basilica is a treasure trove of Renaissance art and architecture. From the moment we stepped inside, we were enveloped in a sense of peace and serenity. The basilica's soaring ceilings, stained glass windows, and intricate frescoes create an atmosphere of reverence and awe.
Explore the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, a stunning Gothic masterpiece in Florence, rich in art, history, and spiritual significance.
The Basilica of Santa Maria Novella is known for Masaccio's Holy Trinity. The Basilica has a rich history dating back to the 13th century. Its architecture showcases a blend of Gothic and early Renaissance styles. According to the Basilica's event schedule, there was a conference for Saint Thomas Aquinas scheduled for January 28, 2025. Unfortunately, we were a bit too early to attend. I was particularly moved by Masaccio's Holy Trinity, a masterpiece of early Renaissance painting. The fresco's innovative use of perspective creates an illusion of depth, drawing the viewer into the scene. Anjali was captivated by the basilica's serene atmosphere, finding solace in its peaceful surroundings. Arjun, ever the curious one, was intrigued by the basilica's history and the stories behind its many artworks. As we wandered through the basilica, we discovered hidden chapels, each adorned with beautiful frescoes and sculptures. The Basilica of Santa Maria Novella is a testament to the enduring power of art and faith.
