The air here is thick with the scent of spices and the sound of a thousand stories. My first day in Marrakech has been nothing short of a sensory explosion. From the moment I stepped out of Riad Petit Karmela with my friends, I knew this trip would be one for the books. It's a city where the ancient and modern worlds collide in a vibrant dance, and I'm eager to share every moment with you.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Dar Cherifa. I remember reading about this place back in Leipzig, and it did not disappoint. Tucked away in a quiet corner of the Medina, the restaurant itself is a work of art, with its traditional Moroccan architecture and intricate tile work. We sat in the sun-drenched courtyard, enjoying a spread of Moroccan pancakes, fresh fruit, and mint tea. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.

Our first stop was the Koutoubia Mosque. Its towering minaret dominates the Marrakech skyline, a beacon that has guided travelers for centuries. I learned that the mosque was built in the 12th century and is considered one of the most important examples of Almohad architecture. Though non-Muslims can't enter the mosque itself, the gardens surrounding it offered a tranquil escape from the bustling city. The intricate geometric designs and the sheer scale of the structure were truly awe-inspiring.

Next on our list was the legendary Jemaa el-Fnaa square. As we approached, the sounds grew louder, the colors more intense. It was a scene straight out of a movie – snake charmers playing their hypnotic tunes, storytellers captivating crowds with their tales, and vendors hawking everything from fresh orange juice to traditional remedies. I was particularly fascinated by the henna artists, their hands moving with incredible speed and precision. I even got a small design done on my hand, a little souvenir that will fade but the memory will last forever.

Lunch at Nomad Marrakech was a welcome respite from the chaos of the square. I had the lamb tagine, and it was melt-in-your-mouth tender, infused with aromatic spices. My friends tried the vegetarian options, and they were equally impressed. It was a perfect spot to relax, recharge, and soak in the atmosphere.

After lunch, we dove headfirst into the Souk Semmarine. What a maze! Narrow alleyways overflowing with colorful textiles, hand-crafted leather goods, fragrant spices, and glittering lanterns. It was a shopper's paradise, but also a test of my haggling skills. I managed to snag a beautiful Berber rug for a reasonable price, a testament to my growing confidence in the art of negotiation. The shopkeepers were characters themselves, each with their own unique stories and sales pitches. It was an immersive experience, a glimpse into the heart of Moroccan commerce.

Our final stop of the day was the Bahia Palace. Built in the late 19th century, this palace is a stunning example of Moroccan craftsmanship and artistry. I learned that the palace was once home to Si Moussa, a grand vizier, and later expanded by his son, Ba Ahmed. It's a place of both grandeur and tranquility, a testament to the rich history and culture of Morocco.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Dar Zellij for dinner. This restaurant is housed in a beautifully restored riad, and the ambiance was magical. The traditional Moroccan music, the flickering candlelight, and the exquisite cuisine created an unforgettable experience. I opted for the tagine again, this time with chicken and preserved lemons. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

Back at Riad Petit Karmela, I sat on the rooftop terrace, sipping mint tea and reflecting on the day's adventures. Marrakech had exceeded all my expectations. It's a city that assaults the senses in the most delightful way, leaving you breathless and eager for more. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, especially our visit to Jardin Majorelle, Yves Saint Laurent Museum and Le Jardin Secret. I have heard so much about these places and I am excited to experience them together with my friends.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Jardin Majorelle, the Yves Saint Laurent Museum, and Le Jardin Secret. I'm particularly excited about Jardin Majorelle; I've seen so many pictures of its vibrant blue walls and exotic plants. I also want to visit La Pergola for drinks and experience the nightlife in Marrakech. I’m also hoping to find some authentic spices to bring back home to Leipzig. Anjali would love that. I also have to remember to buy a portable phone charger, because I forgot mine and I almost ran out of battery today!

Tonight, as I drift off to sleep, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude and excitement. Marrakech has already captured my heart, and I know that the next eight days will be filled with even more unforgettable experiences. Stay tuned for more tales from this magical city!
