Adventures in Chapada Diamantina: Exploring Brazil's Natural Wonder
Day 3: Chasing Waterfalls and Sunset Dreams in Chapada Diamantina
An immersive day exploring Cachoeira do Sossego's challenging trails and Morro do Pai Inácio's breathtaking sunset in Chapada Diamantina.
Sossego and Sunsets: A Day of Diamantina Delights
Today was a day of contrasts, a proper Jamaican rollercoaster of adventure and tranquility, all wrapped up in the stunning scenery of Chapada Diamantina National Park. I’m talking about trading the pounding rhythm of a waterfall hike for the serene sunset vibes atop a mountain. Grab a cup of sorrel, settle in, and mek mi tell you all about it.
I started the day with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Sabor da Serra. I was eager to fuel up for the adventures ahead. I opted for a traditional Brazilian breakfast, a spread of fresh fruits, strong coffee, and some delicious Pão de Queijo. It’s important to start the day with a full belly, especially when you know you'll be burning a lot of energy on the trails. The plan was to tackle Cachoeira do Sossego, and I knew from my research that it was no walk in the park.
The hike to Cachoeira do Sossego, which translates to Tranquility Waterfall, was anything but tranquil. It was a solid 12km trek round trip, and the trail was rocky and challenging. I was joined by my friends, and we set off with high spirits. The terrain was a mix of rocky paths, river crossings, and some pretty steep climbs. The August sun was beating down, but thankfully, there were enough shady spots to catch our breath. I even managed to share a quick Jamaican proverb with the group when we were resting. It was something my grandmother used to say. Every likkle bit adds up! We took each step, each rock, each climb, one at a time.
Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are those that demand the most from us.
After about two and a half hours, we finally arrived at Cachoeira do Sossego. And let me tell you, the name is ironic, because the hike to get there is not relaxing! The waterfall was absolutely stunning. A powerful cascade of water plunging into a large, natural pool. The water was cold, but after the strenuous hike, it was incredibly refreshing. We spent a good hour swimming, relaxing, and enjoying the beauty of the falls. I even tried my hand at some rock jumping, feeling like a proper Linstead Tarzan. I’m glad I packed some snacks, because we were all ravenous after the hike. Sharing some homemade coconut drops with my friends felt like a little taste of home amidst the Brazilian wilderness. We spent a couple hours at the waterfall before beginning the trek back.

The hike back was just as challenging, but the thought of a cold drink and a hearty meal kept us going. We made it back to Lençóis in the late afternoon, tired but exhilarated. After a quick shower at our campsite, we headed out for the second part of our day's adventure: Morro do Pai Inácio.
Morro do Pai Inácio is one of the most iconic landmarks in Chapada Diamantina. It’s a flat-topped mountain that offers panoramic views of the entire region. It's famous for its stunning sunsets, and I was determined to witness one myself. The drive from Lençóis to Morro do Pai Inácio took about 30 minutes. The entrance fee was R$12 per person. The trail to the top is short, only about 500 meters, but it's quite steep.
As we climbed, the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange, pink, and purple. Reaching the summit, the view was simply breathtaking. The entire Chapada Diamantina stretched out before us, a tapestry of mountains, valleys, and plateaus bathed in the golden light of the setting sun. There were other travelers there, all equally mesmerized by the spectacle. It was a communal experience, a shared moment of awe and appreciation for the beauty of nature. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for being able to witness such a sight. I closed my eyes for a moment, listening to the wind and feeling the warmth of the sun on my skin. It was pure bliss.

After the sun had completely set, we made our way back down the mountain, our hearts full of joy and wonder. For dinner, we decided to treat ourselves to some burgers at Ovelha'S - Hambúrguer Esbagaçador. This place is known for its delicious, handcrafted burgers. I ordered the signature burger, and it was absolutely delicious. The perfect way to end a perfect day. The restaurant had a lively atmosphere. It was the perfect spot to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.

Tomorrow, we're planning to explore Poço Azul and Salão das Areias Coloridas. I’m also hoping to pick up some souvenirs at Artesanatos da Elismoni. But for now, I'm going to rest my weary legs and dream of waterfalls and sunsets.
I couldn’t help but think about my family back in Berlin. I sent Klara a few pictures of the sunset from Morro do Pai Inácio. I know Naomi would have loved splashing in the Cachoeira do Sossego. I promised myself to bring them here one day. To share this incredible experience with the people I love most. It’s moments like these that remind me why I travel. It’s not just about seeing new places. It’s about connecting with nature, challenging myself physically and mentally, and creating memories that will last a lifetime.
Chapada Diamantina is truly a special place. It's a land of stunning landscapes, challenging hikes, and unforgettable experiences. If you're looking for an adventure, this is it. Just be prepared to work for it, because the best views always come after the hardest climbs. And don't forget to pack your sunscreen and insect repellent!
Ya mon, another day, another blessing. Until next time, keep exploring and keep dreaming.
