Day 7: A Day of Wildlife Encounters and Lavender Dreams on Kangaroo Island
Exploring Kangaroo Island's wildlife and lavender farms, a sensory journey filled with unique encounters and aromatic bliss with family.
Island Wildlife and Lavender Bliss
Today was a sensory overload in the best possible way. Kangaroo Island continues to surprise and delight with its unique blend of wildlife encounters and fragrant landscapes. It’s a day that reminded me why we chose this destination for our family adventure, a perfect mix of nature, culture, and culinary delights.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Glossy Black. The restaurant had a charming, rustic ambiance, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. I ordered the local eggs with bacon, while Elena opted for the pancakes. Miguel, of course, went for the full breakfast, needing all the energy he could get. The food was delicious, and the coffee was strong – just what we needed to kickstart our day. As we ate, we enjoyed the beautiful sea views, a perfect start to our Kangaroo Island adventures. It's amazing how a good breakfast and a stunning view can set the tone for a day filled with exploration and discovery. I even tried to spot a Glossy Black-Cockatoo, but no luck.

After breakfast, our first stop was the Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park. This wasn't just any wildlife park; it was an immersive experience that brought us face-to-face with some of Australia's most iconic animals. As we walked through the park, we were immediately greeted by kangaroos and wallabies roaming freely. Miguel was thrilled to buy a bag of food and hand-feed them, their gentle nibbles tickling his palm. Elena, ever the nurturer, was in her element, cooing at the adorable joeys peeking out from their mothers' pouches.

The highlight for me was the koala encounter. We were allowed inside their enclosure to pat these cuddly creatures. Their fur was incredibly soft, and their gentle demeanor was captivating. I couldn't help but think of my mother, who always had a soft spot for teddy bears; she would have adored this experience. It's moments like these that make traveling with family so special, sharing unique experiences and creating lasting memories.
We also saw dingoes, quokkas, and a variety of bird species. The park provided informative talks throughout the day, offering insights into the animals' behaviors and conservation efforts. It was heartening to learn about the park's commitment to rehabilitating injured wildlife, a cause that resonates deeply with Elena, given her profession as a registered nurse.
It's not just about seeing the animals; it's about connecting with them and understanding their place in the delicate ecosystem of Kangaroo Island.
For lunch, we headed to Penneshaw and grabbed a bite at The Kiosk. This laid-back, coastal-friendly eatery offered stunning ocean views, which added to the relaxed vibe. I opted for the fish tacos, while Elena chose the garlic pizza. Miguel, predictably, went for a burger. The food was delicious, and the service was friendly and efficient. It was the perfect spot to refuel before our next adventure.

After lunch, we visited the Emu Bay Lavender Farm. As we approached, the air was filled with the calming scent of lavender, a welcome change from the wild, earthy smells of the wildlife park. The farm was a picturesque sight, with rows upon rows of purple lavender plants stretching as far as the eye could see. Elena was particularly excited about this stop, as she's always been a fan of aromatherapy and natural skincare products.

We strolled through the lavender fields, taking in the beauty and tranquility of the surroundings. The farm grows 12 different varieties of lavender, each with its unique properties. We learned about the process of extracting lavender oil and its various uses, from culinary to therapeutic. It was fascinating to discover the versatility of this fragrant plant.
Of course, no visit to a lavender farm is complete without indulging in some lavender-infused treats. We stopped by the farm's café and sampled lavender scones with lavender and strawberry jam, lavender ice cream, and lavender tea. The scones were oversized and delicious. The ice cream was refreshing, and the tea was soothing. It was a sensory experience that delighted our taste buds and calmed our minds.
Before leaving, we browsed the farm's shop, which was filled with a wide range of lavender products. Elena purchased lavender essential oil, hand wash, and a lip balm. Miguel, surprisingly, picked out a lavender-scented candle for his girlfriend. I opted for a bottle of lavender honey, eager to try it in my morning coffee. It’s interesting to see how travel can expose you to new things and change your perspective; I never thought I’d be buying lavender honey, but here I am!
Our last stop of the day was Fine Art Kangaroo Island. As someone who appreciates art, I was eager to see what the local artists had to offer. The gallery was located in Kingscote and showcased a diverse collection of paintings, sculptures, jewelry, and glasswork. The pieces reflected the island's natural beauty and unique character. I was particularly drawn to a sea dragon sculpture and a series of limited-edition prints. Elena admired the intricate sterling silver jewelry crafted by resident artist Fred Peters. We spent a pleasant hour browsing the gallery, appreciating the talent and creativity of the local artists.

Finally, we ended the day with dinner at Amadio’s Vino e Cucina. This Italian restaurant in Kingscote is modeled after an authentic Italian trattoria. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, and the aroma of Italian cuisine filled the air. We started with some local gin and Italian spirits. For our main courses, I chose the Spaghetti Allo Scoglio, while Elena went for the Polpette Al Sugo. Miguel, predictably, ordered a pizza. The food was delicious, and the wine list was extensive, featuring Amadio Wines from Kangaroo Island. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

As we walked back to our accommodation, we reflected on the day's experiences. Kangaroo Island had once again exceeded our expectations, offering a unique blend of wildlife encounters, fragrant landscapes, and artistic expressions. It's a place that appeals to all our senses, a destination that we'll cherish for years to come.
Tomorrow, we are planning to visit Paul's Place and Little Sahara Adventure Centre. I am excited to see what those places have in store for us!
