Day 2: Coastal Beacons and Island Spirits: Exploring Kangaroo Island's East End
Discover the rugged beauty of Kangaroo Island's east coast with its historic lighthouse, tranquil park, and unique local flavors.
Eastern Echoes: Lighthouses, Landscapes, and Local Libations
Today was a day of exploration and discovery as the Santos family ventured to the eastern edge of Kangaroo Island. We immersed ourselves in the history and natural beauty of this unique place, creating memories that I know we'll cherish for years to come. It's amazing how much you can pack into a single day when you're surrounded by such incredible scenery and experiences.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Cactus Kangaroo Island in Kingscote. Elena and I both enjoyed their avocado and halloumi on toasted sourdough, while Miguel opted for the big breakfast. Fueled up, we set off towards our first destination: Cape Willoughby Lighthouse.

The drive itself was an adventure, the landscape transforming into a rugged coastal terrain. As we approached the lighthouse, the views were simply breathtaking. Perched on the easternmost point of the island, the lighthouse stands tall against the backdrop of the Backstairs Passage. The history of this place is palpable; it was the first lighthouse built in South Australia, dating back to 1852. We took the guided tour, climbing the 102 steps to the top. The panoramic views were worth every step, offering a 360-degree vista of the coastline and the sea.
Sometimes, the most enriching experiences are found in the quiet corners of the world, where history and nature intertwine.
The guide shared fascinating stories about the lighthouse keepers and their families, painting a vivid picture of their isolated lives. I couldn't help but think about my own family, and how much I value the connections we share. Life here must have been challenging, but also incredibly rewarding in its own way. Elena was particularly captivated by the stories of the keepers' wives, imagining their resilience and resourcefulness in this remote setting. Miguel, ever the history buff, peppered the guide with questions about the lighthouse's construction and its role in maritime navigation.
After the lighthouse, we drove a short distance to Lashmar Conservation Park.

This park adjoins the long, sandy beach of Antechamber Bay, creating a haven for nature lovers. We strolled along the beach, enjoying the sound of the waves and the feel of the sand between our toes. The park is also known for its birdwatching opportunities, and I was eager to spot some local species. We followed the Chapman River, a tranquil waterway that flows through the park and into the sea. Although we didn't have our canoe with us, it looked like the perfect place for a paddle.
For lunch, we stopped at KI Tru Thai in Kingscote.

It was a delightful surprise to find such authentic Thai cuisine on Kangaroo Island. Elena, missing the flavors of home, was thrilled with the spicy green curry, while Miguel devoured the Pad See Ew. I opted for the Tom Yum soup, which was both flavorful and comforting. The owner was incredibly hospitable, sharing stories about her journey from Thailand to Kangaroo Island. It reminded me of my own journey from the Philippines to Canada, and the challenges and rewards of building a new life in a new country.
As the afternoon approached, we decided to indulge in a different kind of island experience. We made our way to Kangaroo Island Spirits (KIS), a distillery known for its unique gins and vodkas.

The tasting experience was a treat. I sampled their Wild Gin, infused with native botanicals like boobialla and pink peppercorns. The flavors were complex and intriguing, a true reflection of the island's unique landscape. Elena, not usually a gin drinker, was impressed by the smoothness of their O Gin. Miguel, always up for trying something new, enjoyed their SLAP vodka, infused with samphire, lime zest, and pepper. I even picked up a bottle of the Wild Gin to bring back home to Stratford. Perhaps I'll try my hand at crafting some cocktails for our next family gathering, adding a touch of Kangaroo Island to our Canadian evenings.
Before heading back to our accommodation, we had dinner at the Penneshaw Pub.

The pub has a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, and the menu features fresh, locally inspired dishes. I chose the seafood platter, eager to sample the island's bounty from the sea, while Elena enjoyed a classic Australian steak. Miguel went for the schnitzel, a pub staple. As we ate, we watched the sun set over the ocean, painting the sky with vibrant colors. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning to explore the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail and marvel at the Remarkable Rocks. I'm particularly excited about the wilderness trail, as I've heard it offers stunning views of the island's interior. We'll also be stopping at Eden on Kangaroo Island, a shop that showcases local produce and crafts. I'm hoping to find some unique souvenirs to bring back home, perhaps some local honey or artwork.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and tranquility of Kangaroo Island with my family. It's a reminder that sometimes, the best travel experiences are the ones that allow you to connect with nature, history, and local culture. And of course, to share those experiences with the ones you love.
