A Last Day in Meknes

As our Moroccan adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the tapestry of experiences we've woven over the past eight days. Today, in Meknes, was about soaking up the last drops of this enchanting city, revisiting favorite haunts, and securing a few final mementos. It’s funny how a place can burrow its way into your heart in such a short time.

Our final day began, as many others have, with a delightful breakfast at Grillade and restaurant Adam. Jan and I shared a selection of pastries and strong coffee, watching the city slowly awaken. The aroma of grilling meats filled the air, a promise of the delicious kefta to come later in the day, according to some reviews. It was the perfect way to fuel up for our last explorations.

With our bellies full, we ventured towards Al-Hadeem Square. The square was already bustling with activity, a vibrant mix of locals and tourists haggling over wares, sipping mint tea, and simply enjoying the morning sun. I couldn't resist the urge to wander through the stalls one last time, searching for a special reminder of our time here.

Sometimes, the most profound travel experiences are found not in grand monuments, but in the simple, everyday moments that connect us to the heart of a place.

Jan, ever the history buff, was captivated by the stories etched into the walls of the Bab Mansour gate. We spent a good hour simply admiring its intricate details and imagining the countless people who had passed through its arches over the centuries. The square truly is the social heart of the medina. As we strolled through the square, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences we've had.

Next on our list was La Grande Terrasse. Though I had hoped it would be open to enjoy the view, we enjoyed the area around it. We took some photos and enjoyed the architecture. It was a peaceful moment, away from the hustle and bustle of the medina.

Of course, no trip is complete without a bit of shopping! We stopped by Parfois Meknes Label Gallery. I was looking for a stylish accessory to remember my time in Morocco. The gallery had a blend of modern design with Moroccan charm. I finally selected a beautiful scarf, its colors echoing the vibrant hues of the city. Jan found a leather wallet, a practical and stylish souvenir.

For lunch, we decided to try Restaurant Dar Baraka. Tucked away, it felt like stepping into someone's home. The owner welcomed us warmly, and we were soon presented with a feast of Moroccan delicacies. We shared a flavorful tagine and couscous, savoring each bite. The mint tea, of course, was the perfect ending to the meal. It was a truly authentic and memorable dining experience.

As the afternoon waned, we found ourselves drawn back to Al-Hadeem Square. The atmosphere was even more electric than before, with storytellers captivating audiences and musicians filling the air with lively melodies. We sat at a café, sipping coffee and watching the world go by. It was the perfect way to soak up the last moments of our Meknes adventure.

Our final dinner was at Restaurant Palais Ismailia. The restaurant, with its cozy atmosphere and outdoor terrace, was the perfect place to celebrate our trip. We indulged in traditional Moroccan dishes, reminiscing about our favorite moments from the past week. The staff was warm and attentive, making our last evening truly special.

As we prepare to leave Meknes tomorrow, I can't help but feel a pang of sadness. This city, with its rich history, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality, has captured a piece of my heart. I'll cherish the memories we've made here, from exploring ancient ruins to haggling in bustling souks to savoring delicious Moroccan cuisine. Meknes, you've been a dream.

Looking back on our time in Meknes, I realize that it wasn't just about seeing the sights, but about connecting with the people and experiencing their way of life. It was about getting lost in the medina, sipping mint tea with locals, and learning about the history and culture of this fascinating country. It was about embracing the unexpected and finding beauty in the everyday.

As we pack our bags and prepare for our journey back to Warsaw, I know that a part of me will always remain in Meknes. I'll carry the warmth of the Moroccan sun, the scent of spices, and the sound of the call to prayer with me, a reminder of this incredible adventure.

Though our time in Morocco is coming to an end, I know that this is just the beginning of our travel adventures. There are so many more places to explore, cultures to discover, and stories to be told. And I can't wait to share them all with you.

Perhaps we will return to Meknes someday, maybe during the Moussem of Moulay Idriss or the Volubilis International Festival of Traditional World Music. But for now, it's time to say goodbye and embark on the next chapter of our journey. Until then, Meknes, au revoir, and shukran!

As I reflect on our journey, I am reminded of a quote by Ibn Battuta, a famous Moroccan explorer:

Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.

And so, I shall continue to share my stories, inspired by the beauty and wonder of the world around us.

Until next time,
Róisín
