Echoes of Empires and Artisans' Hands

Today was a day of contrasts, a journey through time that took Jan and me from the grandeur of a Roman city to the delicate artistry of Moroccan craftsmanship. It's days like these that remind me why I love to travel, to witness the layers of history and culture that shape a place.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Belle Vue Restaurant. The name certainly lived up to the view! Perched high, the restaurant offered a breathtaking panorama of the Meknes medina bathed in the morning light. Fuelled up, we set off to explore the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis.

The drive to Volubilis was an experience in itself. The Moroccan countryside unfolded before us, a tapestry of rolling hills and fertile plains. As we approached the site, the ruins emerged on the horizon, standing proudly against the clear blue sky. It was easy to imagine Volubilis in its prime, a bustling Roman city at the edge of an empire.

Walking through Volubilis felt like stepping back in time. The remnants of grand villas, temples, and public buildings still stand, offering a glimpse into the lives of the people who once lived here. Jan, ever the history teacher, was in his element, pointing out architectural details and recounting tales of Roman life in North Africa. I was particularly captivated by the mosaics, intricate patterns that have survived the centuries, depicting scenes from mythology and daily life.

The stones of Volubilis whisper stories of emperors and olive groves, a testament to the enduring power of the past.

We wandered along the Decumanus Maximus, the city's main street, imagining the sounds of Roman commerce and conversation. The Triumphal Arch of Caracalla stood tall, a symbol of Roman power and influence. We explored the remains of the basilica, the heart of Roman justice, and the thermal baths, where citizens gathered to socialize and relax. Despite the passage of time, Volubilis retains an important level of authenticity.

It’s funny the things you find at the end of the world.

After a morning of Roman exploration, we drove back to Meknes for lunch at Restaurant Dar Baraka. Tucked away in the medina, this charming restaurant offered a taste of traditional Moroccan cuisine. We shared a tagine, the aroma of spices filling the air. The owner, a friendly gentleman, welcomed us warmly, making us feel like honored guests in his home.

With our appetites sated, we ventured into the heart of Meknes to visit the Dar Jamai Museum.

Housed in a stunning 19th-century palace, the museum showcases the rich artistic heritage of the region. As we wandered through the palace's ornate rooms, we admired displays of traditional ceramics, textiles, jewelry, and woodwork.

The architecture of Dar Jamai itself was a masterpiece, a blend of Spanish-Moorish design and Moroccan craftsmanship. The intricate stucco work, the colorful tile mosaics, and the carved cedar ceilings were a feast for the eyes. Jan was particularly impressed by the collection of antique carpets, each one a unique work of art.

I was drawn to the displays of traditional clothing and jewelry, each piece telling a story of Moroccan culture and identity. The museum also featured a fascinating exhibit on the art of damascening, a metalworking technique in which gold, silver, or copper wires are inlaid into steel or iron to create intricate designs.

Inspired by the artistry we had witnessed at Dar Jamai, we decided to visit L'art De La Damasquinerie.

A shop specializing in this unique craft. We watched as skilled artisans meticulously hammered delicate wires into metal surfaces, creating stunning works of art. I purchased a small damascened box, a reminder of the intricate beauty of Meknes craftsmanship.

Before dinner, we strolled through the Meknes medina, a labyrinth of narrow streets and bustling souks. The air was filled with the sounds of vendors hawking their wares, the aroma of spices, and the vibrant colors of Moroccan life. I couldn't resist purchasing a bottle of Zara's Petale Santale perfume, a scent that seemed to capture the essence of Morocco.

For dinner, we chose L'AS D-LYS.

A restaurant known for its Mediterranean and Moroccan cuisine. We enjoyed a delicious meal of salads and grilled meats, savoring the flavors of the region. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, the perfect way to end a day of exploration.

As we walked back to our riad, the sounds of the medina faded into the night. I reflected on the day's experiences, the echoes of empires and the artistry of artisans. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Bab Mansour Laalej and the Great Mosque of Meknes. It's these contrasts that make Morocco so captivating, a place where history and culture intertwine to create a truly unique travel experience. I am also hoping we can grab a drink at Le Pub.

Today was a reminder of the importance of preserving our cultural heritage, of celebrating the artistry and craftsmanship that make each place unique. It's a lesson I will carry with me as I continue to explore the world, seeking out the stories and traditions that connect us all. As Jan always says, every place has a story to tell, if you just take the time to listen. And I couldn't agree more.
