Echoes of Nature's Embrace

Today was a day of whispers – the gentle rustling of leaves, the soft lapping of water against the shore, and the quiet murmur of the forest. I set out to explore two of Masuria’s hidden gems, each promising a unique encounter with nature's artistry. It was a day of simple pleasures, profound reflections, and a deeper connection to the serene landscapes of this enchanting region.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Karczma Warmińska. The aroma of freshly baked bread and traditional Polish dishes filled the air, instantly making me feel at home. I savored a plate of pierogi, those delightful dumplings filled with savory goodness, accompanied by a steaming cup of coffee. Fuelled and ready, I set off towards my first destination: Rezerwat Przyrody Jezioro Kośno.

Rezerwat Przyrody Jezioro Kośno: A Sanctuary of Stillness

As I approached the nature reserve, a sense of tranquility washed over me. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. Rezerwat Przyrody Jezioro Kośno, established in 1982, spans over 1253 hectares, encompassing the vast, eutrophic Lake Kośno surrounded by dense forests. This reserve is a haven for water and birds of prey, offering a sanctuary of stillness and natural beauty.

The reserve is located on the border between the Olsztyn and Szczytno counties. Nearly half of the reserve is the lake, which is one of the deepest in Warmia and a refuge for pike, zander and perch. The lake is surrounded mainly by pine forests, with some alder, birch and spruce.

I decided to explore the area on foot, following one of the many trails that wind through the woods. Sunlight filtered through the canopy, casting dappled shadows on the forest floor. The path was soft underfoot, covered with pine needles and fallen leaves. I paused frequently, listening to the symphony of the forest – the chirping of birds, the rustling of small animals, and the distant call of a cuckoo.

The trails around the lake are part of a 15 km nature and forest trail that was created in 1995. There are two viewpoints along the trail that allow you to observe the reserve.

As I ventured deeper, I reached the shores of Lake Kośno. The water was still and reflective, mirroring the sky above. The lake is known as a refuge for various species of ducks, grebes, swans and cormorants. I watched as a pair of swans glided gracefully across the surface, their white plumage contrasting against the dark water.

Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.

I found a secluded spot on the bank, sat down, and opened my travel journal. Surrounded by such serenity, words flowed effortlessly. I wrote about the peace I felt, the beauty that enveloped me, and the simple joy of being present in the moment. It was a reminder of why I embarked on this solo journey – to reconnect with myself and with nature.

After a couple of hours of peaceful contemplation, my stomach started to rumble, reminding me it was time for lunch. I packed up my things and headed towards Restauracja z Zielonym Piecem in Olsztynek.

Restauracja z Zielonym Piecem: A Culinary Delight

The drive to Olsztynek was scenic, with rolling hills and fields stretching as far as the eye could see. Arriving at Restauracja z Zielonym Piecem, I was immediately charmed by its rustic appeal. The restaurant is known for its traditional Polish cuisine and cozy atmosphere, complete with a green tiled stove that warms the interior.

I stepped inside and was greeted by the friendly staff. The interior was warm and inviting, adorned with wooden furniture and traditional Polish decorations. The aroma of home-cooked meals filled the air, making my mouth water. I settled into a cozy corner and perused the menu, which featured a variety of regional specialties.

After much deliberation, I decided on the *sandacz* (zander), a local fish, served with roasted vegetables. The dish was exquisite – the fish was perfectly cooked, and the vegetables were bursting with flavor. I savored each bite, appreciating the simple yet delicious combination of ingredients. For dessert, I couldn't resist trying the homemade apple cake, which was warm, comforting, and the perfect ending to a satisfying meal.

As I enjoyed my lunch, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such culinary delights. Restauracja z Zielonym Piecem is more than just a place to eat; it’s a celebration of Polish culture and hospitality. It is known for its regional Upper Lusatia cuisine in a modern edition. The menu combines local products, traditional recipes and the chef's own ideas.

With a full stomach and a happy heart, I continued my journey towards Wąwóz Czarci Jar, my second destination for the day.

Wąwóz Czarci Jar: A Mystical Gorge

Wąwóz Czarci Jar, also known as Czarny Jar, is a picturesque loess gorge in Zaprężyn. It is a short but very scenic stretch of road surrounded by steep slopes dominated by tree roots. The name Czarci Jar translates to Devil's Gulch.

As I arrived at Wąwóz Czarci Jar, I was immediately struck by its mystical atmosphere. The gorge is a narrow ravine, with steep, moss-covered walls that create a sense of enclosure and wonder. The sunlight barely reached the bottom, adding to the mysterious ambiance.

I started walking along the path that runs through the gorge, marveling at the unique landscape. The walls were adorned with intricate patterns of roots and rocks, creating a natural tapestry of textures and colors. The air was damp and cool, and the only sound was the gentle trickle of water.

The area has a history as a fish farm. In the interwar period, a power plant was built near Borowy Młyn that supplied electricity to Kiersztanowo. After the war, the mills and power plant were destroyed. In the 1950s, a group of young scientists located one of the first and largest trout investments in Poland here. The new name, Czarci Jar, appeared officially probably in 1956 after the completion of the construction of the center. The name reflects the nature and wilderness of the area.

I paused to take some photographs, trying to capture the essence of this enchanting place. It was a challenge, as the beauty of Wąwóz Czarci Jar lies not just in its visual appeal but also in its atmosphere – the sense of mystery, the feeling of being immersed in nature's embrace.

As I explored further, I came across a small stream that ran through the gorge. The water was crystal clear, reflecting the surrounding greenery. I sat down on a rock, dipped my feet in the cool water, and closed my eyes. It was a moment of pure bliss, a perfect ending to a day of exploration and discovery.

Before leaving, I took one last look at Wąwóz Czarci Jar, etching its image in my memory. It was a place that had touched my soul, a reminder of the magic that exists in the hidden corners of the world.

Dinner at Restauracja Pod Zamkiem

For dinner, I decided to visit Restauracja Pod Zamkiem, hoping to sample more of the local cuisine. The restaurant is situated near a castle, adding to its charm and appeal. I arrived at the restaurant just as the sun was beginning to set. The sky was ablaze with color, casting a warm glow over the landscape. The restaurant exuded a cozy and inviting atmosphere, with its rustic decor and friendly staff.

I settled into a comfortable seat and perused the menu, which featured a variety of traditional Polish dishes. After much deliberation, I opted for the pulpety z dzika (wild boar meatballs). The dish was a culinary masterpiece, with the rich, gamey flavor of the wild boar perfectly complemented by the savory sauce and the delicate kopytka (potato dumplings).

“The best view comes after the hardest climb.”

As I savored each bite, I reflected on the day's adventures. From the serene beauty of Rezerwat Przyrody Jezioro Kośno to the mystical charm of Wąwóz Czarci Jar, it had been a day of profound experiences and unforgettable moments. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this enchanting region and to connect with its natural wonders.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Forest Arboretum of Warmia i Mazur and Zatoka Księżycowa, continuing my exploration of Masuria’s natural beauty. I'm also hoping to find some unique souvenirs at Jedyna Taka Bajka.

Back at my campsite, I sipped a cup of tea and wrote in my journal, capturing the day’s memories. The stars twinkled above, and the sounds of the forest lulled me into a peaceful sleep. As I drifted off, I couldn't help but smile, knowing that tomorrow would bring new adventures and discoveries in this beautiful corner of Poland.

I'm so grateful for the chance to share these experiences with you all. Until tomorrow!
