A Day of Discovery in the Blue City

Today was all about soaking in the beauty of Chefchaouen from above and delving into its vibrant local culture. From panoramic viewpoints to bustling shops, every moment offered a new perspective on this enchanting blue city. It's amazing how much a change in elevation can shift your entire perspective, not just of a place, but of your own journey.

Our day began with a traditional Moroccan breakfast at Assaada. Eleanor and I shared a tagine, savoring the rich flavors and spices that are so unique to this region. Kenji, of course, opted for a simpler crepe with honey, a choice that always makes him happy. The cozy atmosphere of Assaada was the perfect start to our explorations. It's fascinating how a simple meal can set the tone for the entire day.

After breakfast, we decided to head straight for the View point. The walk there was invigorating, with the crisp morning air and the stunning blue hues of the city surrounding us. As we ascended, the views became increasingly breathtaking, offering a panoramic vista of Chefchaouen nestled in the Rif Mountains. I made sure to bring my camera, eager to capture the beauty of the blue-washed buildings against the backdrop of the mountains. Eleanor pointed out how the unique light of Chefchaouen made every photo look like a postcard. Kenji, ever the energetic one, ran ahead, excited to reach the top and see the view. He was especially thrilled to spot a few cats along the way, a common sight in Chefchaouen.

Sometimes, the most beautiful views are the ones that require a little climb.

Next on our list was the Hero Eagle, another viewpoint that promised even more stunning perspectives. The walk to Hero Eagle took us through some of the more local parts of Chefchaouen, away from the main tourist streets. We passed houses with vibrant colors, laundry hanging out to dry, and locals going about their daily lives. It was a fascinating glimpse into the everyday reality of this unique town. Reaching the Hero Eagle, we were rewarded with an even more expansive view than before. From this vantage point, we could see the entire city spread out below us, a sea of blue stretching as far as the eye could see. I took several photos, trying to capture the immensity of the scene, but no picture could truly do it justice. Eleanor and I took a moment to simply soak it all in, appreciating the beauty and tranquility of the moment. Kenji, meanwhile, was busy trying to spot familiar landmarks, pointing out our hotel and the main square with great enthusiasm.

After our fill of panoramic views, we decided to descend back into the medina and explore the Jabir shop chefchaouen. I was hoping to find some unique souvenirs to bring back home to Bristol. The shop was a treasure trove of local crafts, from intricately designed pottery to colorful textiles and handmade jewelry. I was particularly drawn to the pottery, admiring the skill and artistry that went into each piece. Eleanor, on the other hand, was fascinated by the textiles, running her hands over the soft wool and silk scarves. Kenji, surprisingly, was captivated by a set of small, hand-painted wooden animals, which he insisted on buying with his own pocket money.

Leaving Jabir shop chefchaouen with our newfound treasures, we made our way to Chez Aziz. We were ready for a late lunch. This restaurant came highly recommended for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. We ordered a variety of dishes to share, including couscous, tagine, and some delicious grilled meats. The food was flavorful and satisfying, and the atmosphere was lively and welcoming. Kenji particularly enjoyed the couscous, devouring it with gusto. Eleanor and I savored the tagine, appreciating the complex blend of spices and the tender meat. It was the perfect way to refuel after a long day of exploring.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Restaurant Parador for dinner. Located in our hotel, it offered a convenient and relaxing end to our day. The restaurant had a lovely terrace with views of the city, which were particularly stunning as the sun began to set. We ordered a selection of Moroccan dishes, including a delicious seafood tagine and some grilled kebabs. The food was excellent, and the service was attentive and friendly. Kenji, tired from the day's adventures, fell asleep in his chair before his meal arrived. Eleanor and I shared a knowing smile, grateful for the wonderful day we had experienced together.

Tomorrow, we're planning a day trip to the Waterfalls Akchour and the Parc National de Talassemtane. I've heard the hiking there is incredible, and I'm looking forward to seeing more of the natural beauty that surrounds Chefchaouen. I'm also excited to check out Café Mundial in the evening, a local bar that I've heard has a great atmosphere.

Reflecting on today, I'm struck by how much Chefchaouen has to offer. It's not just a pretty blue city; it's a place with a rich culture, warm people, and stunning natural landscapes. I feel grateful for the opportunity to experience it all with my family, creating memories that we will cherish for years to come.

And as I prepare for another day of adventure, I can't help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation for what tomorrow will bring. Chefchaouen has already captured my heart, and I know there are many more hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
