Scaling Hades Pass and Skala Summit, savoring authentic Greek cuisine, and soaking in the breathtaking vistas of Mount Olympus.
Day 2: Into the Realm of Gods and Legends
The air is crisp and carries a hint of pine as I sit down to pen this entry. Today was nothing short of epic, a true immersion into the heart of Mount Olympus. Eleanor, Kenji and I pushed ourselves, both physically and spiritually, and the mountain rewarded us with vistas that will forever be etched in our memories.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Spilios Agapitos (Zolotas) Restaurant. Nestled in a stunning mountain area, the views alone were enough to invigorate us for the challenges ahead. I opted for the legendary spaghetti bolognese, while Eleanor enjoyed the traditional Greek yogurt with honey. Kenji, predictably, devoured a stack of pancakes. The service was exceptional, and the warmth of the staff made us feel like part of their family. It's these small, authentic experiences that truly enrich a journey. Spilios Agapitos is more than just a restaurant; it's a haven for hikers and travelers seeking both sustenance and camaraderie.

Fuelled and ready, we set off towards Hades Pass. The name itself conjures images of the underworld, and as we ascended, the landscape became increasingly dramatic. Towering cliffs loomed on either side, and the air grew colder, carrying whispers of ancient myths. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and reverence as we walked in the footsteps of gods and heroes. Kenji, ever curious, peppered me with questions about Hades and the creatures of the underworld. It was a wonderful opportunity to share stories from Greek mythology, bringing the legends to life against the backdrop of this imposing mountain pass.

The mountain doesn't care about your aspirations, only your respect.
The hike to Skala Summit was demanding, but every step was worth it. The trail wound its way through diverse terrain, from forested paths to rocky inclines. As we climbed higher, the trees thinned, revealing panoramic views that stretched as far as the eye could see. The Aegean Sea shimmered in the distance, and the surrounding peaks stood as silent sentinels, guarding the secrets of Olympus. I was a bit worried about Kenji, but he proved to be a little mountain goat, scrambling over rocks with surprising agility. Eleanor and I took turns holding his hand on the steeper sections, ensuring his safety and cheering him on. Reaching the summit was a moment of pure exhilaration. The sense of accomplishment, combined with the breathtaking vistas, created an unforgettable experience. I even managed to snap a few photos, though I am kicking myself for forgetting extra batteries!

After soaking in the views, we began our descent, our legs weary but our spirits soaring. Lunch was at Stavros Refuge - Shelter D, a cozy café nestled in the foothills of Mount Olympus. We enjoyed hearty bowls of traditional Greek goat soup, warming ourselves by the fireplace. The refuge exuded rustic charm, with wooden beams and cozy seating creating a welcoming atmosphere. The panoramic vistas of the coast added to the tranquility of the area, making it a perfect spot to relax and refuel.

As the day drew to a close, we made a pit stop at Different All Day Bar. This was a suggestion from one of the locals we met at breakfast, and it turned out to be a great find. The bar had a lively atmosphere, and we enjoyed some refreshing drinks while recounting the day's adventures. Kenji was particularly fond of the local orange juice and some snacks we had at hand. Although I am not much of a drinker, I was keen to try some local beers. Eleanor had a glass of local wine.

For dinner, we chose Taverna Olympos, wanting to immerse ourselves further in authentic Greek cuisine. The taverna was bustling with locals and tourists alike, creating a vibrant and convivial atmosphere. We feasted on a variety of traditional dishes, including moussaka, souvlaki, and fresh seafood. The flavors were bold and delicious, and the portions were generous. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and adventure.

As I reflect on today's experiences, I am struck by the sheer beauty and majesty of Mount Olympus. It's a place where myths come to life, where the natural world inspires awe, and where the warmth of the people makes you feel truly welcome. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the New Holy Monastery of Saint Dionysios of Olympus and the Sacred Cave of Saint Dionysios of Olympus. I'm particularly looking forward to learning more about the history and spirituality of this sacred mountain. Before that, we are planning to have breakfast at Nero Restaurant - Cavo Olympo. I am also planning to buy some souvenirs at Olympus Sport.
I am also looking forward to trying some local fish at Ellinikon Fish Tavern for lunch. For dinner, we are planning to visit Parthenon Restaurant- Bar.
Eleanor is keen to visit the New Holy Monastery of Saint Dionysios of Olympus, as she is a devout Christian. I am more keen to check out the Sacred Cave of Saint Dionysios of Olympus, as I find the history of the place fascinating. Kenji will probably be excited to run around and explore the places. This trip is not just about ticking off destinations on a list; it's about creating shared memories that will last a lifetime. It's about connecting with nature, immersing ourselves in culture, and strengthening the bonds that tie us together as a family.
Until tomorrow,
Shota.
