Day 11: Spiritual Reflections and Seaside Bliss: A Day of Discovery on Mount Olympus
Explore the sacred caves and monasteries of Mount Olympus, then unwind at a vibrant beach bar for a perfect blend of spirituality and relaxation.
Day 11: Sacred Ground and Sandy Shores
Today marked the final full day of our family adventure on Mount Olympus, and it was a day of contrasts – from the solemn reverence of ancient spiritual sites to the laid-back joy of a beachside bar. It’s amazing how a single day can hold such diverse experiences, creating memories that I know we’ll cherish for years to come.
Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Nero Restaurant - Cavo Olympo. Eleanor, Kenji, and I enjoyed a selection of local pastries and strong Greek coffee, fueling up for the day’s explorations. The restaurant's modern take on Mediterranean cuisine was a delightful start, and we appreciated the cozy atmosphere and the friendly service.
First on our itinerary was the Sacred Cave of Saint Dionysios of Olympus. The drive to the trailhead was scenic, winding through the foothills of Mount Olympus. As we parked the car, I double-checked our backpack, making sure we had water, snacks, and of course, my camera. I still regret forgetting the portable camp stove back in Bristol, but we've managed without it. The 30-minute walk to the cave was gentle enough for Kenji, who was excited to explore. The path was adorned with lush greenery and dramatic rock formations, creating a serene atmosphere.
Arriving at the cave, I was immediately struck by the sense of tranquility. The chapel, carved into the rock, was a testament to the devotion of Saint Dionysios, who lived as a hermit in this very spot. We lit a candle, paying homage to the saint and taking a moment for quiet reflection. Kenji, ever curious, was fascinated by the spring of holy water gushing from the mountain. Eleanor and I took turns explaining the significance of the site, trying to convey the deep spiritual connection it held.

The true journey lies not in reaching a destination, but in embracing the experiences encountered along the way.
Leaving the Sacred Cave, we made our way to the Old Holy Monastery of Saint Dionysios of Olympus. The monastery, founded in 1542, has a rich and tumultuous history, having been destroyed and rebuilt several times. As we walked through the ruins, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and respect for the resilience of the monks who had dedicated their lives to this sacred place. The high walls and watchtower spoke of its role as a refuge during conflicts, a testament to its importance to the local community. Kenji enjoyed exploring the restored buildings, his imagination running wild as he pictured the monks of centuries past.

After a morning filled with history and spirituality, we were ready for a change of pace. We drove towards the coast, our destination being Olympus Taverna for lunch. This restaurant offered an authentic Greek dining experience with classic dishes. We shared a selection of mezedes, including tzatziki, dolmades, and grilled halloumi. Kenji particularly enjoyed the gyros, while Eleanor savored the fresh Greek salad. It was a delightful and satisfying meal, providing a taste of local flavors.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we decided to spend the afternoon at MOLOS the beach bar. The sun was shining, and the sea was calling. As we arrived, the vibrant atmosphere of the bar was immediately infectious. The music was upbeat, and people were laughing and enjoying the beautiful day. We found a comfortable spot on the sand, ordered some refreshing drinks, and simply relaxed.

Kenji was thrilled to play in the sand, building elaborate castles and splashing in the shallow waves. Eleanor and I took turns watching him, while also enjoying the opportunity to soak up the sun and unwind. I even tried my hand at windsurfing, though I must admit I spent more time in the water than on the board. Still, it was a fun and exhilarating experience.
As the sun began to set, we packed up our things and headed to Aqua Nova for dinner. This restaurant offered a modern take on Spanish cuisine, and we were eager to try it. The ambiance was elegant, and the service was impeccable. We ordered a selection of tapas, each dish a work of art in both presentation and flavor. The seafood rice was particularly memorable, a flavorful paella with grilled tiger prawns.

After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll along the beach, enjoying the cool night air and the sound of the waves. We reflected on the day’s adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such a diverse range of activities. From the spiritual reverence of the Sacred Cave and the Old Monastery to the carefree joy of the beach bar and the culinary delights of the local restaurants, it was a day that truly captured the essence of Mount Olympus.
As we head back to Bristol tomorrow, I know that we will carry these memories with us, a reminder of the beauty, history, and spirit of this incredible place. I might even try to find a local tea house to remind me of our time here.
And as I think about our trip, I realize that, while I love the technology I work with, it is experiences like these, shared with my family, that truly enrich my life. The blend of cultural immersion and family-friendly activities is what makes our travels so special, and I can’t wait to see where our next adventure takes us.
Embark on a family journey to Mount Olympus, blending mythological exploration with breathtaking natural beauty and adventure.
