Family Adventure to Mount Olympus: Exploring Myths and Nature
Day 7: Springs, Passes and Pubs: A Day of Serene Discoveries on Mount Olympus
Explore the serene Pigadouli Water Spring and the heights of Yosos Pass, capped off with local flavors and a cozy pub visit.
A Day of Tranquil Exploration
Today was a day of gentle exploration, a chance to breathe in the crisp mountain air and appreciate the quieter side of Mount Olympus. It’s amazing how quickly one can find serenity away from the more challenging trails, discovering hidden gems that offer their own unique charm. Eleanor, Kenji and I set out with a flexible plan, eager to see what the day would bring, and it didn't disappoint.
Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Nostalgia Taverna. The name itself evoked a sense of warmth and comfort, and the food lived up to the promise. We enjoyed traditional Greek pastries and strong coffee, fueling up for our day's adventures. Kenji, of course, was most excited about the pastries, and Eleanor and I enjoyed watching him devour them with gusto. It reminded me of our favorite tea houses back in Bristol, where we often spend our weekends.
With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set off towards Pigadouli Water Spring. The drive itself was scenic, winding through the foothills of Mount Olympus, with glimpses of snow-capped peaks in the distance. The December air was crisp, a stark contrast to the warmer temperatures we're used to back in the UK.
The hike to the spring from Prionia was a moderate one, just about 30 minutes, perfect for a leisurely stroll with the family. The trail meandered through lush greenery, even in December, showcasing the resilience of nature. Kenji was fascinated by the flora, pointing out different types of trees and asking endless questions about the local wildlife. I tried my best to answer, drawing on my limited knowledge and the occasional fact I remembered from our travel guidebook.
Reaching Pigadouli Water Spring was like stepping into a hidden oasis. The crystal-clear water gurgled gently, surrounded by scenic hillsides. The tranquility of the place was palpable, a perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. We spent some time simply soaking in the atmosphere, listening to the sounds of nature and feeling the cool spray of the water on our faces. Eleanor, ever the romantic, remarked that it felt like a scene from a Greek myth, a place where nymphs might gather.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.
Next on our itinerary was Yosos Pass. The drive to the pass was more challenging, with winding roads and steeper inclines. But the views along the way were more than worth it. As we climbed higher, the landscape transformed, with snow becoming more prevalent and the trees taking on a frosted appearance. The air grew colder, and we bundled up in our warmest layers.
Yosos Pass offered panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The vista was breathtaking, a sea of white peaks stretching as far as the eye could see. We took some photos, trying to capture the grandeur of the scene, but as always, the reality was far more impressive than any photograph could convey. Kenji, despite the cold, was eager to explore, scrambling over rocks and throwing snowballs with abandon. His energy was infectious, and even Eleanor and I couldn't help but join in the fun.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way back down the mountain, our thoughts turning to dinner. We decided on Medusa Seafood Restaurant, drawn in by the promise of fresh seafood and traditional Greek flavors. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a warm atmosphere that made us feel right at home. We feasted on grilled octopus, fresh fish, and a variety of local delicacies. Kenji, surprisingly, enjoyed the octopus, declaring it squishy but yummy.
Our final stop for the evening was Oliver's Pub, a local watering hole known for its friendly atmosphere and wide selection of drinks. It was a welcome change to relax with a drink in hand. The pub was lively, filled with locals and tourists alike, all sharing stories and laughter. I opted for a local beer, while Eleanor enjoyed a glass of Greek wine. Kenji, of course, had a soft drink, and amused himself by playing with the coasters and listening to the conversations around him.
As we sipped our drinks, we reflected on the day's adventures. It had been a day of contrasts, from the tranquility of Pigadouli Water Spring to the grandeur of Yosos Pass, culminating in the warmth and conviviality of a local pub. It was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing famous landmarks, but also about experiencing the local culture and connecting with the people and places that make each destination unique.
Tomorrow, we plan to ascend to the Panoramic view and Muses Plateau, hoping for clear skies to fully appreciate the scenery. We'll be having breakfast at Mparagátsa / Bragatsa, lunch at Ellinikon Fish Tavern, and dinner at Nerómylos. Before heading back to camp, we will stop by Olympus market to pick up some souvenirs. It will be another day of exploration, and I am excited to see what Mount Olympus has in store for us.
“To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.” – Aldous Huxley
Thinking about our plans for tomorrow, I realized I should probably check the batteries for my camera and make sure I have enough space on my portable charger. It would be just like me to forget these things, especially after forgetting the portable camp stove before we left Bristol. Eleanor always laughs at my absentmindedness, but she also knows that I always manage to capture the best moments, one way or another.
As I write this, Kenji is already fast asleep, dreaming of mountain springs and snowy landscapes. Eleanor is reading a book, her face illuminated by the soft glow of her e-reader. I am content, filled with gratitude for this incredible journey and the opportunity to share it with my family. Mount Olympus has exceeded all our expectations, and I can't wait to see what the remaining days of our adventure will bring. I feel truly blessed to be able to share this experience with Eleanor and Kenji. These are the moments that make life worthwhile, the memories that we will cherish for years to come. Goodnight from Mount Olympus.
Reflections on the Day
Today was about embracing the beauty of simplicity and finding joy in the everyday moments. It's a reminder that sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are the ones that are unplanned and unexpected.
