Family Adventure in Orvieto, Italy
Day 2: Delving into Orvieto's Depths: A Day of Wells, Museums, and Culinary Delights
Explore Orvieto's historical depths and artistic heights with a visit to ancient wells and national museums, savoring local Umbrian cuisine.
A Journey Through Time and Taste
Today in Orvieto was a captivating blend of historical exploration and culinary indulgence. From descending into the depths of a remarkable well to immersing ourselves in Etruscan artifacts, and finally savoring authentic Umbrian flavors, it was a day that truly enriched our understanding and appreciation of this ancient city. It’s amazing how much history is packed into this one hilltop!
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Ristorante Caffè Capitano del Popolo. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the sight of Eleanor and Kenji enjoying their pastries set a cheerful tone for the day. I opted for a simple yet satisfying cornetto and cappuccino, fueling up for the adventures that lay ahead. The caffè's lively atmosphere, with locals chatting and the sun streaming through the windows, made it a perfect start.

Descent into the Pozzo di San Patrizio
Our first major stop was the famed Pozzo di San Patrizio, or St. Patrick's Well. Commissioned by Pope Clement VII in the 16th century, this architectural marvel was designed to ensure a water supply during times of siege. As we approached the well, its imposing structure immediately captured our attention. The sheer scale of it was impressive, and Kenji was especially intrigued by the prospect of descending into its depths. I made sure he held my hand tightly as we began our trek downward.

The well features two separate spiral staircases, ingeniously designed so that those going down would not interfere with those ascending. The staircases are illuminated by seventy windows, creating an ethereal play of light and shadow. Descending the 248 steps was an experience in itself. The temperature noticeably dropped as we went deeper, providing a welcome respite from the summer heat. Kenji, initially excited, soon grew a bit weary, but Eleanor kept him entertained with stories and games. I couldn't help but think about the donkeys that once carried water up these very steps, a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the people of Orvieto.
The depths of the Pozzo di San Patrizio are not just a marvel of engineering, but a profound connection to the history and resourcefulness of Orvieto.
Reaching the bottom, we were greeted by a small pool of water, a tangible link to the well's original purpose. The cool, damp air and the echoing sounds created an atmosphere of both mystery and awe. After a brief rest and a few photos, we began our ascent. The climb back up was more strenuous, but the sense of accomplishment and the unique perspective from within the well made it all worthwhile. Kenji was very happy to be back in the sunlight.
A Cultural Dive at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Orvieto
Next on our itinerary was the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Orvieto. Housed in the 13th-century Papal Palace, the museum showcases a remarkable collection of Etruscan, Roman, and medieval artifacts. As someone with a keen interest in history and cultural exchange, I was eager to explore the exhibits. Eleanor, with her background as a primary school teacher, was equally excited to share the experience with Kenji.

The museum is well-organized, with exhibits that trace the history of the region from its earliest inhabitants to the Middle Ages. We were particularly fascinated by the Etruscan bronzes and ceramics, which offered a glimpse into the daily life and artistic achievements of this ancient civilization. Kenji, surprisingly, showed a great interest in the pottery, perhaps drawn to the intricate designs and the stories they seemed to tell. Eleanor did a great job explaining the history to him in a way that was engaging and easy to understand.
One of the highlights of the museum was the reconstructed frescoes from Etruscan tombs. These vibrant paintings, remarkably preserved, depicted scenes of banquets, dances, and religious rituals. They provided a vivid and intimate look into the beliefs and customs of the Etruscans. I found myself reflecting on the parallels between their world and our own, the shared human experiences that transcend time and culture.
Lunch at Trattoria la Palomba
By lunchtime, we had worked up quite an appetite. Following a recommendation, we headed to Trattoria la Palomba, a charming restaurant known for its traditional Umbrian cuisine. The trattoria, family-run since 1965, exuded a warm and inviting atmosphere. The aroma of home-style cooking filled the air, and the friendly staff made us feel immediately welcome.

We started with a selection of local cheeses and cured meats, accompanied by crusty bread and a glass of Orvieto Classico wine. The flavors were rich and authentic, a testament to the quality of the ingredients. For our main courses, Eleanor chose the umbricelli pasta with fresh-grated black truffles. I opted for the wild boar ragu, a hearty and flavorful dish that perfectly captured the essence of Umbrian cuisine. Kenji, never one to shy away from pasta, devoured a plate of simple spaghetti with tomato sauce.
The meal was a delightful sensory experience, from the taste of the food to the ambiance of the trattoria. It was a reminder of the simple pleasures in life: good food, good company, and a beautiful setting. As we savored our meal, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share these moments with my family.
Evening Indulgence at Duca di Orvieto
As evening approached, we decided to treat ourselves to a special dinner at Duca di Orvieto. This restaurant is known for its refined approach to traditional Umbrian recipes, and I was eager to experience their culinary creations. The restaurant itself was intimate, with a cozy atmosphere that made for a relaxed dining experience.

The menu at Duca di Orvieto changes seasonally to ensure the freshness of the ingredients. We started with a delicate zucchini blossom appetizer, followed by handmade ravioli filled with ricotta and herbs. For our main courses, Eleanor chose the guinea fowl with roasted vegetables, while I opted for the lamb with rosemary and potatoes. Each dish was expertly prepared and beautifully presented, a testament to the chef's skill and creativity.
To complement our meal, we selected a bottle of local red wine, full-bodied and rich in flavor. The combination of the food, wine, and ambiance created a truly memorable dining experience. Even Kenji, usually restless during long meals, seemed captivated by the atmosphere and the delicious food.
A Nightcap at Caffè Clandestino
To cap off the evening, we strolled over to Caffè Clandestino, a popular spot known for its cocktails and relaxed atmosphere. Situated on Corso Cavour, it was the perfect place for people-watching and soaking in the vibrant energy of Orvieto. I ordered an Aperol Spritz, while Eleanor chose a glass of local wine. Kenji, of course, opted for a refreshing fruit juice.

As we sat under the umbrellas, sipping our drinks and watching the world go by, I reflected on the day's experiences. From the depths of the Pozzo di San Patrizio to the heights of the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, and the culinary delights in between, it had been a day filled with discovery and delight. Orvieto had truly captured our hearts, and I was already looking forward to the adventures that tomorrow would bring.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Torre del Moro for panoramic views and explore the Anello della Rupe [If something else, add that instead]. We'll also be trying out Osteria da Mamma Angela for breakfast, Il Malandrino Bistrot for lunch, and Ristorante Il Giardino da Giovanni for dinner. Plus, a little shopping at Patris Orvieto is on the agenda [if something else, add that instead]. I am excited to see what other hidden gems Orvieto has in store for us!
The Orvieto Folk Festival is happening this month and the Orvieto Festival of Strings is also ongoing, but we did not have time to check either out today.
I am so glad that we decided to come to Orvieto. It is truly a special place, and I am making memories here with my family that I will cherish forever.
