A Bird's-Eye View and a Cliffside Stroll

Today was a day of contrasts, from reaching for the sky atop Orvieto’s famous tower to tracing the ancient paths that hug the city’s dramatic cliffs. Orvieto continues to surprise and enchant us, revealing new facets of its character with every step.

Our day began, as all good days in Italy should, with a delightful breakfast at Osteria da Mamma Angela. The aroma of strong coffee filled the air as Eleanor and I sipped our cappuccinos, Kenji happily munching on a pastry. This osteria is known for its traditional Italian cuisine and cozy atmosphere, and it certainly didn't disappoint. I savored the moment, thinking how lucky I am to share these experiences with my family. I made a mental note to try their carpaccio with almonds next time, as recommended by some reviews.

After breakfast, we made our way to the Torre del Moro. This medieval clock tower stands tall in the Orvieto skyline, offering panoramic views of the city and the surrounding Umbrian countryside. Kenji was especially excited about climbing the tower, his little legs eager to tackle the 230 steps. Thankfully, there was an elevator for the first 60 steps, which was a relief for Eleanor, who isn't the biggest fan of heights.

As we ascended, I couldn't help but think about the history this tower has witnessed. Originally called Torre del Papa, it was built in the late 13th century and later renamed after a local soldier nicknamed The Moor. The mechanical clock, added in 1876, still chimes every quarter hour, a sound that has marked time for generations of Orvieto residents.

Reaching the top, we were rewarded with breathtaking views. The entire city unfolded beneath us, a tapestry of terracotta rooftops, ancient streets, and the magnificent Duomo. The rolling hills of Umbria stretched out in the distance, a sea of green under the summer sun. Kenji pointed out landmarks, his eyes wide with wonder. Eleanor, despite her initial apprehension, was equally captivated by the vista. I took several photos, trying to capture the beauty of the moment, but no image could truly do it justice.

Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are those that challenge us, leading to unexpected discoveries and breathtaking views.

After descending the Torre del Moro, we decided to embark on the Anello della Rupe, a walking path that encircles the city along the base of the cliffs. This trail offers a unique perspective of Orvieto, allowing you to appreciate its dramatic setting and natural defenses. We found the entrance near Piazza Cahen, following the signs for percorso.

The Anello della Rupe proved to be a delightful contrast to the bustling city center. The path wound through lush vegetation, offering glimpses of the valley below and the imposing cliffs above. The hike is considered easy to moderate, perfect for a family stroll. Kenji enjoyed exploring the natural surroundings, pointing out interesting plants and insects. Eleanor and I appreciated the tranquility of the path, a welcome escape from the crowds.

As we walked, we passed several points of interest, including Porta Rocca and the Fontana di San Zeno. The chestnut trees and dense vegetation created a serene atmosphere, making it easy to imagine what life was like in Orvieto centuries ago. The path also offered glimpses of the Etruscan remains of the Necropolis, a reminder of the city's ancient origins.

By lunchtime, we had worked up quite an appetite. We stopped at Il Malandrino Bistrot for a well-deserved lunch. This charming bistrot is known for its authentic Umbrian cuisine with a modern twist. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the staff was incredibly friendly. I ordered the boar gnocchi, a local specialty, while Eleanor opted for a vegetarian dish. Kenji, of course, chose pasta with tomato sauce. The food was delicious, and we savored every bite.

After lunch, we decided to indulge in a little retail therapy. We visited Patris Orvieto, a shop specializing in olive wood crafts. This shop is a treasure trove of unique souvenirs and gifts, showcasing the artistry of local artisans. The scent of olive wood filled the air as we browsed the selection of kitchenware, decorative items, and lamps. I was particularly impressed by the handcrafted lamps, each one a unique work of art. We ended up purchasing a small olive wood bowl as a memento of our trip.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Ristorante Il Giardino da Giovanni for dinner. This restaurant is known for its traditional Umbrian cuisine and charming garden setting. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, and the staff was attentive and friendly. I ordered a local game dish, while Eleanor chose a pasta dish with truffles. Kenji, predictably, ordered pizza. The food was excellent, and we enjoyed a leisurely meal under the stars.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Orvieto has to offer. From its iconic tower to its hidden paths, this city is full of surprises. Tomorrow, we plan to explore the underground caves at Pozzo della Cava and visit the Palazzo Piccolomini. I'm also looking forward to trying a new breakfast spot, Ristorante L'antica Rupe, and perhaps enjoying a drink at Bacaro Orvieto in the evening. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

The summer heat continues to embrace Orvieto, making sunscreen and staying hydrated essential. I'm also reminded that I still need to find an adapter for Italian outlets. It's the little things that often slip your mind when you're caught up in the excitement of travel. Despite the minor inconveniences, our family adventure in Orvieto is turning out to be everything we hoped for and more. I feel grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with Eleanor and Kenji, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
