Adventures in History and Culture

Today marks the end of my incredible solo journey in Cusco. It’s bittersweet, as I’ve fallen in love with this city's vibrant culture and rich history. But before I head back to Bristol, I wanted to soak up a few more experiences that truly capture the spirit of Cusco. Today, I ventured into the world of coca and explored ancient ruins, making the most of my last day here.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Mistura Grill Cusco. The aroma of grilled meats and Andean spices filled the air, instantly awakening my senses. I opted for a traditional Peruvian breakfast of *pan con palta* (bread with avocado) and a strong coffee. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. The restaurant, located in the Plaza de Armas, offered a stunning view of the city waking up. It was a moment to reflect on the incredible journey I’ve had, from the bustling markets to the serene mountain vistas.

With breakfast done, my first stop was the Coca Museum. Nestled in the San Blas neighborhood, the museum is a tiny doorway easily overshadowed by the neighboring shops, but it’s a treasure trove of information about the coca leaf. I've always been intrigued by the cultural significance of coca in the Andes, and this museum provided an excellent overview. The displays traced the uses of the coca leaf from sacred rituals to its more modern incarnations. I learned about the plant's importance to ancient Andean civilizations, long before the arrival of the white powdery drug that gave the plant worldwide recognition. I discovered that people traditionally chewed coca leaves for nutritional and religious reasons, believing that the plant could ward off hunger and bolster stamina.

The museum visit also shed light on how even Coca-Cola owes its name and existence to the plant; coca leaves were once used as a flavoring agent. It was fascinating to learn about the coca leaf's role in warding off altitude sickness, something I had personally experienced and combatted with coca tea during my stay. The museum also had a gift shop stocked with everything from coca chocolates to teas to liquors. I picked up a few coca candies as souvenirs for Eleanor and Kenji.

Leaving the Coca Museum, I made my way to the Qhalispuqyo Ruins, an ancient Inca site nestled high in the Andes Mountains. The weather was pleasant, with an average temperature of 27ºC and clear skies, perfect for hiking. The ruins are a bit of a trek from the city center, but the journey was well worth it. As I climbed higher, the panoramic views of the lush valleys and rugged peaks were simply breathtaking.

The Qhalispuqyo Ruins offered a window into the ingenuity of the Inca Empire. The intricate stonework and precise engineering stood as a testament to a civilization that mastered both art and science. I marveled at how the massive rocks fit seamlessly together, defying centuries of earthquakes and weather. The site's elevated location provided panoramic views of lush valleys and rugged peaks, blending natural beauty with historical wonder. I spent a couple of hours exploring the ruins, imagining what life must have been like for the Incas who once lived there. The precision-cut walls, their rust-colored hues mirroring nearby Puka Pukara structures, were particularly striking.

After immersing myself in the history of Qhalispuqyo, I returned to Cusco for a late lunch at Yaku Restaurant. I had heard wonderful things about their use of organic and local products from their farm in the Sacred Valley. I decided to try the alpaca steak, which was cooked to perfection and served with sweet potatoes. The presentation was beautiful, each plate looking like an art piece! The service was also impeccable, with the staff being incredibly welcoming and accommodating. It was the perfect way to refuel after a day of exploring.

As the sun began to set, I decided to have a final Peruvian dinner at Ofrenda Peruvian Healthy Food. I had heard that they offered a health-conscious twist on traditional Peruvian dishes, with plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. I ordered the quinoa salad with goat cheese, which was made with two types of quinoa, chestnut praline, and bell peppers. It was a light yet satisfying meal, perfect for my last night in Cusco. The restaurant had a serene ambiance, and I appreciated their focus on sustainability.

With dinner done, I decided to experience Cusco’s nightlife one last time. I headed to Paddy's Irish Pub, which claims to be the highest Irish pub in the world. Located in the bustling heart of Cusco's Centro Histórico, Paddy's was a lively spot filled with tourists and locals alike. I enjoyed a pint of Guinness while listening to live music and chatting with fellow travelers. It was a fun and engaging environment, and I felt a sense of camaraderie with everyone there.

As I sipped my Guinness, I reflected on my incredible journey through Cusco. I had come here seeking cultural immersion and historical exploration, and I had found so much more. I had connected with the local culture, tasted amazing food, and made memories that would last a lifetime. Traveling solo had allowed me to fully engage with the city at my own pace, and I felt a sense of accomplishment and gratitude.

Tomorrow, I will be heading back to Bristol, carrying with me the vibrant spirit of Cusco. I'll miss the stunning landscapes, the delicious food, and the warm hospitality of the Peruvian people. But I know that this is not goodbye, but rather *hasta luego*. I hope to return someday with Eleanor and Kenji to share the magic of Cusco with them. For now, it's time to pack my bags and prepare for the journey home.

I’m grateful for the experiences I’ve had here, and I look forward to sharing more travel stories with you all soon. Until then, *adiós* from Cusco!

Before I end this blog, I would like to share that on June 4, there was a Mass in Memory of Dr. Humberto Vidal Unda and the Founders of Cusco Day held in the Cusco Cathedral. Also, Cusco is celebrating its jubilee month, with parades and civic celebrations filling the streets. The city is alive with color, music, and energy. It’s a truly unforgettable experience to visit during this time.

“Travel is more than seeing sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.”

I can’t wait to see what adventures await me next, perhaps with Eleanor and Kenji by my side. Until then, safe travels to you all!
