Day 5: Saturday in Chefchaouen: A Day of Discovery and Delight
Explore Chefchaouen's hidden gems: Darb Limoun, Bab El Ain, and Lavadero de la Ciudad. A day of culture, cuisine, and captivating sights.
A Saturday Stroll Through Chefchaouen's Soul
Today was a day of wandering and wonder in Chefchaouen, a city that continues to enchant me with its blue-washed beauty. I set out with no particular agenda, other than to soak in the atmosphere and see where the day would lead me. It turned out to be a journey filled with delightful discoveries and sensory experiences that I'm excited to share.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at The Magic Lamp House of Aladin. Perched on their rooftop terrace, I enjoyed a traditional Moroccan breakfast while soaking in the panoramic views of the blue cityscape. The fresh orange juice and aromatic mint tea were the perfect start to a day of exploration. Maximilian would have loved the view from here, and Elena would have been fascinated by the magical atmosphere. I made a mental note to bring them here someday.

Wandering Through Darb Limoun
After breakfast, I decided to wander through Darb Limoun. This area is truly the heart of Chefchaouen, and it was teeming with life. The narrow streets were a maze of blue hues, with shops selling everything from handmade crafts to vibrant textiles. I loved getting lost in the labyrinthine alleyways, each corner revealing a new photo opportunity. It felt like stepping into a living postcard.

I spent a good hour exploring the shops, admiring the intricate pottery and woven goods. The local artisans were incredibly friendly, sharing stories about their craft and the history of the region. I even picked up a beautiful handwoven rug as a souvenir – a piece of Chefchaouen to bring back home to Bielefeld. I was particularly drawn to the vibrant colors and traditional Berber designs. It reminded me of the colorful textiles of my hometown Cholula, and it made me feel a little closer to home.
The beauty of Chefchaouen lies not just in its blue walls, but in the vibrant culture and the warm hearts of its people.
Stepping Through Bab El Ain
Next on my list was Bab El Ain, one of the main entrances to the Chefchaouen Medina. As I approached, I could immediately feel the historical significance of this ancient gateway. The architecture was stunning, a perfect blend of Moroccan tradition and the unique aesthetic of Chefchaouen. Passing through Bab El Ain felt like stepping back in time, entering a completely different world.

Just outside the gate, I found a bustling market with vendors selling everything from fresh produce to local street food. I couldn't resist trying a hot chickpea cake, a local delicacy that was surprisingly delicious. The energy around Bab El Ain was infectious, a vibrant mix of locals and tourists all eager to experience the magic of Chefchaouen.
A Visit to Lavadero de la Ciudad
From Bab El Ain, I took a short walk to Lavadero de la Ciudad, also known as the City Laundry. This historic washhouse was once the heart of the community, where locals gathered to wash their clothes in the river. Today, it's a serene spot where you can still see people using the fresh mountain water for various activities.

I sat by the river, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the gentle sound of flowing water. It was fascinating to watch the locals going about their daily routines, a glimpse into the authentic life of Chefchaouen. I even saw a few people dipping their feet in the cool water, a welcome respite from the afternoon heat. The architecture of the washhouse itself was also quite interesting, possibly influenced by Spanish colonial designs.
Lunch at Restaurant Bab Kasaba
By this time, I was starting to feel hungry, so I made my way to Restaurant Bab Kasaba for lunch. This restaurant is ideally located, right in front of the Kasbah, offering a great view while you eat. I decided to try their tagine, a traditional Moroccan dish that was absolutely divine. The flavors were rich and complex, a perfect blend of spices and tender meat. I savored every bite, enjoying the lively atmosphere and the friendly service.

The store was filled with beautiful handcrafted items, from intricate textiles to stunning pottery. The staff were incredibly helpful, sharing the stories behind each piece and helping me find the perfect souvenirs for my family back home. I arrived just in time to watch the sunset, a breathtaking display of colors painting the blue city in hues of orange and pink.

The mint tea was particularly refreshing, and the staff were attentive and friendly.
Reflecting on the day, I realized how much I had experienced in such a short time. From the vibrant markets to the serene washhouse, Chefchaouen had revealed its many layers, each one more captivating than the last. As I prepare for tomorrow's adventures, which include visiting Plaza Mohammed V, the Bouzafer Mosque and the Ethnographic Museum of Chefchaouen, I am filled with anticipation. I can't wait to see what new discoveries await me in this magical blue city. And perhaps I'll treat myself to a drink at Cafe Clock after a day of exploring.
