Today was a delightful mix of relaxation and exploration here on Holbox Island. After a week of adventures, it felt wonderful to simply unwind and soak in the island's beauty. From the pristine beaches to the surprising culinary gems, Holbox continues to enchant me and my family. It's amazing how a place so small can offer such a diverse range of experiences.

Our day began with a leisurely breakfast at A by Amaite. The hotel itself is lovely, right on the beach, and the breakfast was a delightful start to the day. I opted for the avocado toast, which came with a tropical twist of local fruits. Maximilian enjoyed the traditional Mexican breakfast, while Elena devoured a stack of pancakes. The relaxed atmosphere and the sound of the waves made it a perfect family moment.

After breakfast, we decided to spend the morning at Playa NELSY. The white sand was incredibly soft, and the water was crystal clear. Elena was thrilled to build sandcastles, while Maximilian and I took turns swimming in the gentle waves. It was so peaceful, a true escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. I made sure we all had plenty of sunscreen, especially after forgetting the insect repellent – lesson learned from previous days!

The beach was lined with palm trees, providing plenty of shade. We found a perfect spot to set up our little camp, complete with a beach blanket and our trusty travel guidebook. I even managed to sneak in some time to read about the local wildlife, hoping to spot some flamingos later in the trip. Playa NELSY truly felt like a slice of paradise.

The best memories are made when you unplug and simply enjoy the moment.

Around midday, our stomachs started to rumble, signaling lunchtime. We strolled over to Roots Pizzas a la leña Isla Holbox, a place I had heard great things about. The restaurant had a rustic, bohemian vibe, with sandy floors and wooden furniture. It felt very Holbox-like! We ordered their famous lobster pizza, a local delicacy. The combination of fresh lobster, creamy cheese, and wood-fired crust was simply divine. Elena, of course, opted for a simple Margherita pizza, which she declared was the best she had ever tasted. Maximilian and I shared a refreshing mango margarita, the perfect complement to our meal.

After lunch, while Elena napped in the stroller, I wanted to do some shopping and found myself at Diosa maya. This little shop was a treasure trove of unique finds. I was looking for a new swimsuit and found the perfect one, beautifully embroidered and made with UV-protective fabric. I also picked up a couple of handmade bracelets as souvenirs for my friends back in Bielefeld. Supporting local artisans always feels good, and the shop owner was so kind and helpful.

We spent the late afternoon at Isla Holbox Beach Zona Hotelera. This area was a bit more lively than Playa NELSY, with beach clubs and music playing. Elena loved watching the kite surfers, and Maximilian enjoyed a cold beer at a beachfront bar. I simply enjoyed soaking in the sun and watching the world go by.

As the sun began to set, we headed back to the hotel to freshen up for dinner. Tonight, we had reservations at AMA Japanese Restaurant, a place that came highly recommended. I was a bit surprised to find a Japanese restaurant on a small Mexican island, but I was also intrigued. The restaurant is located inside Casa Las Tortugas hotel, adding to its unique charm.

The ambiance at AMA was elegant and cozy, with dim lighting and a romantic atmosphere. We started with some creative cocktails – I tried a fusion cocktail with mezcal and yuzu, while Maximilian opted for a classic sake. For dinner, we shared a selection of sushi rolls and sashimi, all incredibly fresh and flavorful. Elena even tried a few pieces of sushi, much to our surprise! The staff was attentive and knowledgeable, explaining the flavor profiles of each dish.

I was particularly impressed with their commitment to sustainability, using local ingredients and reducing their environmental footprint. It’s wonderful to see businesses on the island taking steps to protect its natural beauty. The restaurant is known for the fresh fish and seafood.

After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll along the beach, enjoying the cool evening breeze. The stars were out, and the sky was incredibly clear. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of Holbox's natural wonders with a visit to UMA Cayo Cocodrilo and Isla de la Pasión. We'll start the day with breakfast at Restaurante Wayak Dreamy Food Holbox, followed by lunch at Barba hbx and dinner at Chinicuil Tacos + Mezcal Holbox Restaurant. I'm also hoping to check out The Hot Corner bar for a nightcap. I can’t wait to see what adventures tomorrow brings!

I am still thinking of Cholula, my birth town, which is so different from here. But both places have a very special place in my heart. As I drifted off to sleep, I felt grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family. Holbox is more than just a destination; it's a place where memories are made.

P.S. I didn’t see any signs of Sargassum today, which was a relief. The beaches were clean and beautiful, making our beach days even more enjoyable.

Also, I noticed that there is a Holbox Bootcamp, maybe I should check it out.

Holbox Carnaval 2025 will take place from February 28 to March 4, 2025. It would be great to return to Holbox during that time.
