Sofia's Solo Escape to the Serene Con Dao Islands
Day 5: Con Dao's Captivating Contrasts: History, Nature, and Culinary Delights
Explore Con Dao's historic sites, savor vegetarian cuisine, and unwind with cocktails, embracing the island's serene beauty and vibrant culture.
A Day of Reflection and Rejuvenation
Today was a day of contrasts, blending the somber reflection of Con Dao's history with the vibrant beauty of its natural landscapes and the simple pleasures of its culinary scene. It’s amazing how one small island can hold so much history, beauty, and flavor. Today was a day of exploration and contemplation, and I can't wait to share it with you all.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Madame Hà - Vegetarian Cuisine. As someone who appreciates fresh, flavorful vegetarian options, I was eager to try this spot, and it did not disappoint. I started with a refreshing smoothie made with local fruits, followed by a bowl of pho chay, a vegetarian version of the classic Vietnamese noodle soup. The broth was light yet flavorful, and the tofu and vegetables were perfectly cooked. It was the perfect way to fuel up for the day's adventures.

After breakfast, I decided to delve into the island's history with a visit to Sở Lò Vôi. This former lime kiln, built by the French in 1864, stands as a stark reminder of the harsh conditions endured by the political prisoners who were forced to mine coral and produce lime here. As I walked through the site, I couldn't help but feel a sense of sadness and respect for those who suffered here. The remnants of the kilns and the surrounding landscape served as a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit.

The sun was high in the sky, and the October heat was starting to bear down, so I decided to take a break and do some shopping at Hiệu Vin Store. I needed to pick up a few essentials, including the sunglasses I had forgotten to pack. I also grabbed a few snacks and a cold drink to keep me going. It was a quick stop, but it was nice to see a modern convenience amidst the island's historical and natural attractions.

For lunch, I headed to Nhà hàng Thu Tâm, known for its fresh seafood. Although it was just me dining, I decided to treat myself to a seafood feast. I ordered grilled squid, steamed prawns, and a plate of stir-fried morning glory with garlic. The seafood was incredibly fresh, and the flavors were bold and delicious. It was a satisfying meal that left me feeling energized and ready for more exploration.

With my belly full, I made my way to Mũi Cá Mập, or Shark Cape. This scenic spot offers stunning views of the coastline and the surrounding ocean. The dramatic cliffs and pristine beaches made for a perfect photo opportunity, and I spent some time capturing the beauty of the landscape. I even took a moment to simply sit and listen to the waves crashing against the shore, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such natural beauty. I can see why it is such a popular place for tourists and locals alike.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences come from unexpected places, blending history, nature, and the simple joys of life into a tapestry of unforgettable moments.
As the sun began to set, I decided to treat myself to a cocktail at On Cloud Nine Cocktail&Bar. This bar is known for its creative mixology and laid-back vibe, and it seemed like the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring. I ordered a signature cocktail made with local ingredients and enjoyed the stunning sunset views. The atmosphere was sophisticated yet relaxed, and I felt completely at ease as I sipped my drink and reflected on the day's events. It was the ideal way to end a day filled with contrasts and discoveries.

October in Con Dao is proving to be quite pleasant. The weather is warm, with average temperatures hovering around 27-28°C. While there's a chance of rain, it's generally less frequent this time of year, making it ideal for outdoor activities. The humidity is relatively high, but the sea breezes help to keep things comfortable.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, I'm excited to explore more of Con Dao's natural beauty and historical sites. My itinerary includes a visit to Chim Chim Cape and the Vo Thi Sau Hero Grave, both of which promise to be memorable experiences. I'm also looking forward to trying some new restaurants, including Kwai's Bistro Con Dao for breakfast, Nhà hàng Nam Dinh for lunch, and Yin Yang for dinner. And, if I have time, I might even check out LoCo Lodge & Pub for a drink in the evening.
My time in Con Dao has been nothing short of amazing. The island's unique blend of history, nature, and culture has captivated me, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to experience it all. I am also so happy that I decided to travel solo, as it has given me time to reflect on my life back home in Bielefeld with Max and Elena and what is important to me. I am so lucky to have them, and traveling solo has made me realize how much I appreciate them.
I have been thinking a lot about luxury since visiting On Cloud Nine. It made me think about the penthouses in New York and how they are a symbol of luxury and private living. Maybe one day Max and I will own a penthouse of our own!
Until tomorrow, friends!
P.S. I almost forgot to mention, I saw the new iPhone 17 Pro Max in Hiệu Vin Store! The camera is amazing!
