Sofia's Solo Escape to the Serene Con Dao Islands
Day 6: Island Echoes: Reflecting on History and Beauty at Con Dao
Exploring Con Dao's poignant past at Vo Thi Sau Hero Grave and Chim Chim Cape's beauty. A day of reflection and natural wonder.
A Day of Remembrance and Coastal Views
Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of somber reflection and breathtaking natural beauty. It’s funny how travel can throw these experiences together, challenging you to hold space for both the heavy and the light. Con Dao continues to surprise me with its layered history and stunning landscapes.
I started my day with breakfast at Kwai's Bistro Con Dao. The cozy atmosphere was perfect for easing into the morning. I ordered a Vietnamese coffee and some fresh fruit. It was a simple breakfast, but the flavors were vibrant and the coffee strong – just what I needed to prepare for the day ahead. I was hoping to try their food, but unfortunately they weren't serving any today.
From there, I decided to head to Chim Chim Cape. The journey itself was an adventure. I rented a motorbike, which seems to be the most popular way to get around the island. The roads were well-maintained, and the scenery was incredible. Lush greenery on one side, and the sparkling ocean on the other. The breeze felt amazing as I rode, a welcome contrast to the Bielefeld air I'm used to. I definitely should have remembered my sunglasses, though! Note to self: always double-check the essentials.
Arriving at Chim Chim Cape, I was immediately struck by the views. The coastline was rugged and dramatic, with turquoise waters crashing against the rocks. I spent a good hour just wandering around, taking photos and soaking it all in. It was so peaceful and calming, a world away from the marketing reports and conference calls that fill my days back in Germany. I could see why it’s considered one of the most renowned destinations in Con Dao.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet corners of the world, where history whispers and nature sings.
After Chim Chim Cape, I had lunch at Nhà hàng Nam Dinh. I wanted to try some authentic Vietnamese cuisine, and this place came highly recommended. I ordered Pho, and it was absolutely delicious. The broth was rich and flavorful, and the noodles were perfectly cooked. It reminded me of the flavors I grew up with in Cholula, and for a moment, I felt a pang of homesickness. I made a mental note to call my mom later and ask her for her recipe for mole poblano. Maybe I can try making it when I get back to Bielefeld.
With a full stomach, I steeled myself for the afternoon's visit to Vo Thi Sau Hero Grave. It’s located in Hang Duong Cemetery, a place of immense historical significance. Vo Thi Sau was a young revolutionary who was executed on Con Dao at the age of 19. Her story is incredibly moving, a testament to the courage and sacrifice of the Vietnamese people. It's open from 7 AM to 9 PM daily.
The cemetery itself is a somber and serene place. As I walked through the rows of graves, I couldn't help but feel a deep sense of respect and gratitude for those who fought for their country's independence. The grave of Vo Thi Sau is a site of pilgrimage for many Vietnamese. People bring offerings of flowers and incense, and the atmosphere is thick with reverence. I took some time to read about her life and her role in the resistance movement. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the human cost of conflict and the importance of standing up for what you believe in.

Before arriving at the grave, many visitors stop at the memorial to pay their respects. The architecture of the memorial reflects traditional Vietnamese designs, and the gardens are meticulously landscaped, providing a peaceful retreat for reflection. It’s a place where the weight of history feels palpable, yet there’s also a sense of hope and resilience in the air.
Leaving the cemetery, I felt a mix of emotions. Sadness, certainly, but also inspiration and a renewed appreciation for the freedoms I often take for granted. It’s these kinds of experiences that make travel so enriching, pushing me to confront difficult truths and connect with people and stories across cultures. Visiting the grave of Vo Thi Sau is considered one of the top 50 unique tours in Vietnam.
To lighten the mood, I decided to check out LoCo Lodge & Pub for a drink. It was a bit out of the way, but I’d heard good things about the atmosphere. It's located at the end of a road, featuring hostel-style dorms and safari-style canvas tents. It was definitely a unique spot, with a lively, social vibe. I ordered a local beer and chatted with some other travelers. It was a nice way to unwind after a heavy day, sharing stories and laughter with people from all over the world.

For dinner, I went to Yin Yang Restaurant. This charming eatery is run by a German-Vietnamese couple, and the food is amazing. I had some fresh fish with a vibrant sauce, and it was one of the best meals I’ve had on the island. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, making it the perfect way to end the day.

As I write this, back in my guesthouse, I’m reflecting on the day’s experiences. Con Dao continues to challenge and inspire me. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Di tích Bãi Sọ Người and Hòn Bảy Cạnh. Another day of history and natural beauty awaits, and I’m eager to see what else this island has to offer. One thing I know for sure: Con Dao is a place that stays with you long after you leave.
