Arrival in Serra de São Mamede: Embracing the Unexpected Alentejo

After months of planning and dreaming, my solo escape to Parque Natural da Serra de São Mamede in Portugal has finally begun! Leaving behind the familiar autumn landscapes of Bielefeld and saying a temporary goodbye to my wonderful family, Maximilian and Elena, was tough, but the allure of this relatively unknown natural park was too strong to resist. This trip is a personal milestone, a chance to reconnect with myself amidst nature's beauty, and share my experiences with all of you. Today, I'm diving headfirst into the heart of the park, ready to explore its landscapes and history.

The journey itself was quite smooth. My flight from Germany landed in Lisbon without a hitch, and from there, I hopped on a train that whisked me closer to the Alto Alentejo region. As the train chugged along, the scenery began to transform, trading urban sprawl for the rolling hills and cork oak trees that define this part of Portugal. It was a দৃশ্যমান reminder that I was entering a different world, one far removed from my daily life as a marketing consultant.

Upon arriving in the region, I decided to start my adventure in Castelo de Vide, a charming medieval town nestled within the park's boundaries. The crisp October air, carrying a hint of woodsmoke, greeted me as I stepped off the bus. Autumn is a wonderful time to visit, with mild temperatures perfect for hiking and exploring. I hadn't booked any hotels in advance, preferring to find a local guesthouse on arrival, which I managed to do without any issues.

My first order of business was breakfast, and I stumbled upon a delightful little spot called A Adega. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee wafted through the air, drawing me in. I ordered a *torrada* (toast) with local cheese and a *café com leite*. It was simple, but utterly satisfying. The staff were incredibly friendly, making me feel welcome from the moment I walked in. Fueled up and ready to explore, I set off to discover the wonders of Castelo de Vide.

The beauty of solo travel lies in the freedom to discover at your own pace, to linger where your heart desires, and to embrace the unexpected detours that lead to the most memorable experiences.

I decided to start with the Parque Natural da Serra de São Mamede itself. The park spans over 60,000 hectares and is known for its unique microclimate, which supports diverse ecosystems. Instead of the rolling plains I associate with the Alentejo, here, the landscape is mountainous with lush forests. It's a haven for birdwatchers, and I was excited at the prospect of spotting some of the rare birds of prey that call this park home. I spent hours driving along the winding roads, stopping at various viewpoints to take in the panoramic vistas. The views were simply breathtaking, with rolling hills stretching as far as the eye could see. The autumn colors were just beginning to emerge, painting the landscape in hues of gold, amber, and russet.

Next on my list was the Judiaria de Castelo de Vide, the town's old Jewish quarter. As someone with a keen interest in history and cultural anthropology, I was eager to explore this well-preserved neighborhood. The Judiaria dates back to the 14th century and is a testament to the Jewish community that thrived here for centuries. I wandered through the narrow, cobblestone streets, admiring the traditional architecture and soaking in the atmosphere. The houses are whitewashed with colorful accents, and many still bear the marks of their Jewish heritage. I visited the old synagogue, a small but significant building that now serves as a museum. It was a somber reminder of the persecution faced by the Jewish community during the Inquisition, but also a celebration of their resilience and enduring legacy.

For lunch, I opted for Restaurante Varanda do Alentejo in nearby Marvão, a place recommended for its authentic Alentejan cuisine and stunning views. The drive to Marvão was an experience in itself, with the road winding its way up to the mountaintop village. The restaurant lived up to its reputation, offering a menu filled with regional specialties. I decided on the *ensopado de borrego* (lamb stew), a hearty and flavorful dish perfect for a cool autumn day. And the views? Absolutely incredible! From my table, I could see for miles across the Alentejo plains.

As the afternoon wore on, I made my way back to Castelo de Vide and decided to treat myself to a gin and tonic at The Gin Library + Outdoor Terrace. I had read about this place and was intrigued by its extensive collection of gins. As a gin aficionado, I couldn't resist! The bar has a lovely outdoor terrace, perfect for enjoying a drink while soaking up the atmosphere of the town. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring. Sipping on my G&T, I reflected on my first day in Serra de São Mamede. This region is a true hidden gem, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, rich history, and authentic culture. I'm already looking forward to what tomorrow brings!

For dinner, I decided to try Tasca Do Zé Bébé, a local *tasca* known for its traditional Portuguese fare. I wanted something simple and comforting, and this place delivered. I ordered the *sopa da pedra* (stone soup), a hearty vegetable soup with beans and meat. It was the perfect end to a long day. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and I enjoyed chatting with some of the locals.

Before heading back to my guesthouse, I took a stroll through the town square. The air was filled with the sounds of laughter and music. It felt like the whole town was out enjoying the evening. I couldn't resist stopping for a *pastel de nata* (custard tart) at a local bakery. It was the perfect sweet treat to end the day.

As I settle in for the night, I can't help but feel a sense of excitement for the days ahead. Serra de São Mamede has already captured my heart with its natural beauty, rich history, and warm hospitality. Tomorrow, I plan to explore Ermida de São Mamede and Cascata da Cabroeira. I've heard the waterfall is especially beautiful this time of year, and I'm eager to see it for myself. Plus, I'm hoping to pick up some local delicacies at Sabores Apurados, Lda. I also plan to have breakfast at Café Restaurante Realinho, lunch at Carlos Caeiro and dinner at Tombalobos. Goodnight from Portugal!

It's interesting to note that October 5th is Republic Day in Portugal, a national holiday. While I didn't notice any specific celebrations in Castelo de Vide, it's a reminder of the country's rich history and cultural identity. I'm also aware that the International Conference on the Middle Ages is scheduled to take place in Castelo de Vide later this month. It seems like this town is always buzzing with activity!

I am so glad I chose this destination for my solo retreat. Leaving my family behind in Bielefeld was difficult, but I know they are cheering me on from afar. I miss Maximilian's calm demeanor and Elena's infectious laughter, but I also know that this time alone is essential for my well-being. It allows me to recharge, reflect, and reconnect with my passions. And who knows, maybe I'll even pick up some new marketing insights along the way! After all, travel is the best form of education. I can't wait to share more of my adventures with you as I continue to explore this incredible region.
