A Day of Sensory Overload & Natural Wonders
Today was a day dedicated to immersing myself in the raw beauty and tranquility that Serra de São Mamede Natural Park has to offer. Leaving behind the charming village where I stayed, I set out to explore two distinct natural havens: Guadiana Valley Natural Park and the Sensory Ecopark of Pia do Urso. Each location promised a unique experience, and I was eager to embrace whatever adventures awaited me.

My morning began with a hearty breakfast at Café Restaurante Realinho - Francisco Realinho & Santos, Lda. I savored a strong café con leche and a freshly baked pastel de nata, a traditional Portuguese custard tart. Fuelled up, I was ready to start my explorations. The plan was to visit the Guadiana Valley Natural Park first, and then make my way to the Sensory Ecopark of Pia do Urso. It was a beautiful morning, the sun was shining, and a gentle breeze rustled through the trees. The perfect start to a day of exploration.
The drive to Guadiana Valley Natural Park was an experience in itself. The landscape transformed as I headed east, with rolling hills giving way to vast plains dotted with cork oak trees. The park, a protected area since 1995, stretches across a significant portion of the Alentejo region, bordering Spain. I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of the place. The park spans almost 700 square kilometers, encompassing hills, plains, and deep valleys.
I decided to start my visit at Pulo do Lobo, a stunning waterfall along the Guadiana River. The name, meaning Wolf’s Leap, comes from the narrowness of the gorge at this point, creating the illusion that one could leap across. Of course, I didn't try. The power of the water was mesmerizing, and the sound of the cascading water echoed through the valley. I spent a good hour simply taking in the view and enjoying the tranquility of the surroundings. It was easy to see why this place is considered one of the natural wonders of Portugal.
Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in conquering mountains, but in surrendering to the gentle rhythm of nature.
As I ventured deeper into the park, I was struck by the incredible biodiversity of the region. The park is home to a variety of rare and endangered species, including the black stork, the lesser kestrel, and the Bonelli’s eagle. Although I didn't spot any of these elusive creatures, I did see several other birds, including Iberian magpies and azure-winged magpies. The landscape itself was incredibly diverse, with everything from open plains to dense Mediterranean scrubland.
After a few hours of exploring the Guadiana Valley Natural Park, I decided to head towards my next destination: the Sensory Ecopark of Pia do Urso. Located in the village of São Mamede, near Batalha, this park is designed to stimulate the senses and provide an immersive experience for visitors of all abilities. What makes this park unique is that it was specifically designed for people with visual impairments, with features that engage the senses of touch, smell, and hearing.

The Sensory Ecopark of Pia do Urso was a completely different experience from Guadiana Valley. As I entered the park, I was immediately struck by the sounds of nature. Birds were singing, wind was rustling through the trees, and water was trickling in the distance. The park is filled with aromatic plants and herbs, and the air was filled with their fragrances. I followed a winding path, feeling the different textures beneath my feet. There were smooth stones, soft grass, and rough bark.
The park is designed to be accessible to everyone, with tactile maps and Braille signage. I ran my hands over the maps, feeling the raised contours of the landscape. I closed my eyes and imagined what it would be like to navigate the park without sight, relying solely on my other senses. It was a humbling and enlightening experience. I spent a couple of hours wandering through the park, taking in the different sensory experiences. I touched the velvety leaves of the oak trees, smelled the sweet scent of lavender, and listened to the gentle sounds of the forest. It was a truly immersive experience, and I left feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
Before heading back to my accommodation, I stopped for a late lunch at Mongo Burger Lisboa. I had heard great things about their burgers, and I was eager to try them out. I ordered the classic Monzo burger, which was made with custom-ground beef, ketchup, mustard, diced onions, and sour pickles, all served on a brioche bun. The burger was juicy and flavorful, and the fries were crispy and perfectly salted. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring.

As the sun began to set, I decided to treat myself to dinner at Restaurante Ribeirinho. The restaurant had been recommended to me for its traditional Alentejan cuisine, and I was eager to try some local dishes. I ordered the migas, a traditional bread-based dish flavored with garlic, olive oil, and various meats. It was hearty and flavorful, the perfect comfort food after a long day of hiking. The restaurant was cozy and welcoming, and the staff was friendly and attentive.

Before calling it a night, I decided to visit Quinta Serra de São Mamede Turismo Rural for a relaxing drink. The bar was cozy and inviting, with a warm fireplace and comfortable seating. I ordered a glass of local wine and sat by the fire, reflecting on the day's adventures. The wine was rich and flavorful, and it was the perfect way to unwind after a long day. Sipping my wine, I thought about how lucky I was to be able to experience the beauty and tranquility of Serra de São Mamede Natural Park. It was a day filled with sensory experiences and natural wonders, a day that I will never forget.
