Exploring the Enchanting Island of Santorini with Friends
Day 15: A Final Toast to Santorini: Wine, Views, and Lasting Memories
Relive my final day in Santorini, filled with wine tasting, stunning views, and unforgettable moments with friends. A perfect farewell!
Farewell, Santorini!
As my Santorini adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences of the past two weeks. From exploring ancient ruins to savoring delicious Greek cuisine, this island has truly captured my heart. Today, I embarked on a final journey to soak in the beauty and flavors of Santorini, creating memories that I will cherish forever.
My last day in Santorini began with a delightful breakfast at La Colline restaurant Santorini. The restaurant is located in Fira, and I was excited to try it, as I love French cuisine. Inspired by the passion and philosophy of French gastronomy, La Colline allows its guests to experience the Art de Vivre with exceptional flavors from the French cuisine and inspirations from its famous chef. It was such a treat to start the day with such amazing food! The terrace offered stunning views of the caldera, sparkling under the morning sun. Sipping my coffee and savoring a warm croissant, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of the pastries once I return home to Haarlem – perhaps with a Dutch twist, of course!

With a full stomach and a spring in my step, I headed to Exo Gonia. Nestled on the southeastern slopes of Santorini, Exo Gonia is a tranquil village, offering a glimpse into the authentic Greek island life. Unlike the crowded tourist hubs of Fira and Oia, Exo Gonia offers a serene atmosphere, and it is an ideal place for visitors who do not want to be amidst crowds and enjoy picturesque surroundings. It stands on a hill, therefore, it offers spectacular views of the island, vineyards, and the radiant blue horizon of the Aegean Sea. I explored the village's hidden corners, admiring the traditional architecture and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. It was a refreshing contrast to the bustling tourist spots, offering a glimpse into the authentic Santorini way of life. I spent some time simply wandering, camera in hand, capturing the essence of this charming village.

Santorini is more than just a destination; it's an experience that awakens the senses and nourishes the soul.
Next on the agenda was Santorini Wine Stories. Our family has been involved for, at least, 150 years with wine production. Wine has been produced there since ancient times, but it was during the Middle Ages that the wine of Santorini became famous worldwide under the influence of the Republic of Venice. Their aim is to spread fun information about wine, how wine is produced, the passion for wine varieties of the best quality and to taste each different delicious flavor in one of the most beautiful islands of Greece. The breeze of the Aegean Sea, the secrets of Santorini, and the surprises of Caldera can be easily discovered in a glass of wine. I was excited to be guided on this journey of experiences. I had arranged a wine-tasting session with my friends, eager to sample the island's renowned volcanic wines. As we swirled, sniffed, and sipped, we learned about the unique terroir and the winemaking traditions passed down through generations. The crisp Assyrtiko, with its mineral notes and citrusy aromas, was a particular favorite. We laughed, shared stories, and reveled in the joy of good company and exquisite wine.

After our wine-tasting adventure, hunger beckoned, leading us to Rare Greek Restaurant Santorini for lunch. This restaurant is a concept Steakhouse established on Gali Square in Imerovigli, serving premium steaks, burgers and fine modern Greek cuisine! Meat from Greece and all over the world, baked in hand-made wood oven, as well as Greek modern cuisine with Santorini's finest ingredients. The waiter checked with the chef that all dishes that I ordered were safe for my allergies. I ordered pita bread and a T-bone steak that came with french fries. The french fries are cooked in sunflower oil. No nuts go in the fryer, but not sure about dairy as I'm okay with cross-contamination. The restaurant was in Imerovigli, and while it may not have had the Santorini spectacular view, the quality of food was definitely worth the try. The steak that melts in your mouth! Perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. The staff were friendly and the service was excellent.

As dusk approached, we sought out a cozy spot to enjoy a final Santorini sunset. Vr Cafe Bar, located in Fira, offered the perfect ambiance. With its stylish decor and panoramic views of the volcano, it was the ideal setting to bid farewell to this magical island. We ordered cocktails, reminisced about our adventures, and watched as the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors. The atmosphere was charming, and the staff were friendly and helpful. I made sure to try their freddo cappuccino. It was the most delicious I've had in Santorini! As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the caldera, I felt a pang of sadness mixed with gratitude. For our final dinner, we chose Argo Restaurant in Fira. Privately housed in Kontochori village, a mere 5-minute drive from Fira, Argo Restaurant offers guests an exceptional culinary expedition through the rich tastes of Greek cuisine, accompanied by an enticing ambiance thoughtfully crafted to complement their gastronomic experience! The restaurant's label is synonymous with eclectic cuisine that finds much inspiration in the sea that surrounds the island! Half of the secret lies in the locally sourced, genuine ingredients that they lovingly gather only from their fishermen, farmers, and fields. The other half lies in the guidance of the professional Chef and his unerring instinct for bringing together ingredients that create the most delectable flavors. The skilled team worked on a traditional yet dreamly menu that turns the concept of fine dining into something truly special! Although you can't see the sunset from here, the views are still spectacular. The food is incredibly delicious and surprisingly affordable, offering great value for the quality. The staff is charming and attentive, making the whole experience even more enjoyable. As we savored each dish, from the fresh seafood to the succulent lamb, we toasted to friendship, adventure, and the beauty of Santorini. The restaurant was absolutely fantastic. The staff were incredibly helpful. The food was delicious, the cocktails simply the best. It was the perfect ending to our culinary journey on the island.

As I pack my bags, I can't help but feel a sense of melancholy. Santorini has woven its spell on me, captivating me with its breathtaking landscapes, rich history, and warm hospitality. I will miss the taste of fresh seafood, the scent of bougainvillea, and the sound of the Aegean Sea. But most of all, I will miss the friendships forged and the memories created with my dear friends.
Tomorrow, I bid farewell to this enchanting island, carrying with me a piece of its magic. As I prepare to return to Haarlem and my family, I know that Santorini will forever hold a special place in my heart. Until we meet again, Santorini, efharisto!
As I reflect on my final day in Santorini, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences I have had. This trip has been more than just a vacation; it has been a journey of self-discovery, friendship, and cultural immersion. I have learned to appreciate the simple things in life, to embrace new adventures, and to cherish the bonds that connect us. And as I prepare to return home, I know that I will carry these lessons with me, enriching my life in countless ways.
So, here's to Santorini, a destination that has captured my heart and soul. May its beauty continue to inspire and its magic continue to enchant all who visit.
Until next time,
Sofia
