Arriving in Chefchaouen felt like stepping into a dream. The stories and photos I’d seen couldn’t quite prepare me for the sheer saturation of blue that washes over everything. From the moment I stepped off the bus, a sense of calm and wonder enveloped me, a feeling I hadn't experienced since wandering the ancient streets of Matera, my hometown in Italy. This solo adventure is already shaping up to be something truly special.

The journey from Tangier was smooth, and I quickly found my way to Dar Nokhba Inn. The inn is charming, and perfectly located. After settling in, I was eager to plunge into the heart of the blue city: the Medina.

The Chefchaouen Medina is unlike any other I’ve explored. Forget the flat, sprawling souks of Marrakech; this Medina is a captivating maze of winding alleys and staircases, each turn revealing a new shade of blue. It’s a photographer's dream, and I was in my element, snapping away at the vibrant doorways, the overflowing plant pots, and the intricate details of the architecture. I even managed to capture a few shots of the local cats, who seem to be as much a part of the city as the blue paint itself.

To walk through Chefchaouen is to walk through a living painting, where every corner turned reveals a new masterpiece of color and culture.

I quickly realized that getting lost was inevitable, and in fact, encouraged. Each wrong turn led to a hidden gem, a tiny shop selling handmade crafts, or a breathtaking view overlooking the Rif Mountains. I was on the hunt for some unique souvenirs, and Chefchaouen did not disappoint. The local crafts are exquisite, from the handwoven textiles to the intricate pottery. I picked up a beautiful Berber carpet, a reminder of my time here, and a few smaller items as gifts for Pieter, Alessia, and of course, my family in Matera.

My first culinary experience was at Cafe Clock for breakfast. It was a delightful spot, and I enjoyed a traditional Moroccan breakfast of eggs, bread, and mint tea. The atmosphere was relaxed, and the staff were incredibly friendly. It reminded me of the cozy cafes back in Haarlem, where Pieter and I often spend our weekends.

For lunch, I ventured to Chez Hicham. I savored a tagine, the aroma filling the air with exotic spices. The tagine was rich and flavorful, and I couldn’t resist trying a few of their delicious pastries. It was the perfect way to refuel before continuing my exploration.

Kasbah and Plaza Uta el-Hammam: History in Blue

In the afternoon, I made my way to the Kasbah, a 15th-century fortress located in the heart of the Medina. The Kasbah offered a glimpse into Chefchaouen’s history, with its lush gardens and panoramic views of the town. I wandered through the courtyards, imagining what life must have been like within those walls centuries ago. The contrast between the red-clay walls of the Kasbah and the surrounding blue city was striking, a testament to the diverse influences that have shaped Chefchaouen over the centuries.

I found a spot on a bench and simply watched the world go by, soaking in the energy of the city. It was a perfect moment of quiet contemplation, a chance to reflect on my journey so far and to appreciate the beauty of my surroundings.

Shopping for Treasures

Of course, no visit to a Moroccan Medina is complete without a bit of shopping. I spent hours browsing the souks, haggling for souvenirs and admiring the colorful displays of goods. I found some beautiful handmade jewelry, perfect gifts for my girlfriends back home, and a few spices to bring back to Haarlem, hoping to recreate the flavors of Morocco in my own kitchen. I even stumbled upon a small shop selling traditional Moroccan slippers, and I couldn’t resist buying a pair for myself, a comfortable and stylish reminder of my time in Chefchaouen.

Dinner with a View

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Restaurant Bab Ssour for dinner. The restaurant is known for its traditional Moroccan cuisine and its stunning views of the city. I ordered a tagine, and as I savored the delicious flavors, I watched as the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors. The city below twinkled with lights, creating a magical atmosphere that I will never forget. It was the perfect end to a perfect day, a moment of pure bliss that I will cherish forever.

A Few Reflections

As I walked back to Dar Nokhba Inn, I couldn’t help but smile. Chefchaouen had exceeded all my expectations. It was a city of beauty, history, and culture, a place that had captured my heart in just one day. I felt grateful for the opportunity to explore this enchanting place, to immerse myself in its vibrant atmosphere, and to connect with its friendly people. I realized that this solo trip was exactly what I needed, a chance to reconnect with myself and to discover new passions and perspectives.

I did miss Pieter and Alessia today, and I thought about how much Alessia would love running around the blue streets, discovering hidden corners. I made a mental note to bring them back here someday, to share this magical place with the people I love most.

I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures. Ras El Ma and the City View Point are on the itinerary, and I'm eager to see what new wonders await. I might even check out Bar Oum Rabie in the evening. The mountains surrounding the city are calling me, and I can't wait to explore them.
