A Fond Farewell

As our ten-day escapade in the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey we've undertaken. Today, our final day, was a beautiful culmination of the natural wonders and cultural gems we've encountered. It was a bittersweet experience, knowing we'd soon be leaving this majestic landscape, but also filled with the joy of the memories we've created.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Las Endrinas in Broto. The cozy atmosphere and the promise of a day filled with exploration invigorated us. I savored every bite, knowing that this might be my last taste of authentic Spanish cuisine for a while. The plan was to visit the Nacimiento del Río Ara, Tesoro Buesa, and Cascada Castiecho, each promising unique experiences.

The crisp morning air nipped at our cheeks as we set off towards the Nacimiento del Río Ara. The drive itself was a visual treat, with the Pyrenees painting a stunning backdrop against the clear blue sky. As we approached the source of the river, the landscape transformed into a serene panorama of crystal-clear waters gushing from the heart of the mountains. The sight was nothing short of mesmerizing.

The Nacimiento del Río Ara, the birthplace of the Ara River, is a sight to behold. The river originates from the Vignemale massif, cascading down from an elevation of approximately 2,930 meters. This pristine river is known as the last virgin river in the Pyrenees, remaining untouched by dams or human intervention. Its waters are incredibly pure, supporting diverse wildlife like otters, trout, and various bird species. The area is a haven for hikers and nature enthusiasts, offering breathtaking views and a chance to connect with the unspoiled beauty of the Aragonese Pyrenees.

We spent a considerable amount of time simply absorbing the scene, the sound of the rushing water filling our ears. Nang, ever the nature enthusiast, was particularly captivated by the untouched beauty of the river. It was a moment of serene connection with nature, a perfect way to start our final day.

The beauty of a place is not just in its sights, but in the memories it etches in your heart.

Next on our itinerary was Tesoro Buesa. The name itself, Tesoro, meaning treasure, piqued our curiosity. What awaited us was a charming village nestled in the mountains, exuding an old-world charm. We strolled through its narrow streets, admiring the traditional architecture and soaking in the peaceful ambiance. It felt like stepping back in time, away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.

We learned that Buesa is a small, picturesque village located near Broto, known for its traditional Pyrenean architecture and tranquil atmosphere. The village offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, making it a popular spot for hikers and photographers. Its well-preserved stone houses and narrow, winding streets provide a glimpse into the region's rich history and cultural heritage. Although specific details about a Tesoro Buesa (Buesa Treasure) are scarce, the village itself can be considered a treasure due to its beauty and historical significance.

As we wandered, we stumbled upon a local artisan crafting intricate woodwork. I was immediately drawn to his skill and the passion he poured into his creations. After a brief conversation, I purchased a small, hand-carved wooden bird as a memento of our trip. It now sits proudly on my desk in Montreal, a constant reminder of our Spanish adventure.

Our final stop for the day was Cascada Castiecho. After our previous hikes, the idea of seeing this majestic waterfall was very exciting. The trail to the waterfall was relatively easy, winding through lush greenery and rocky terrain. The anticipation grew with each step, the sound of cascading water growing louder and louder.

And then, there it was – Cascada Castiecho in all its glory. The water cascaded down with tremendous force, creating a misty spray that kissed our faces. The sight was simply breathtaking, a perfect end to our exploration of the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park. I took out my camera and captured the scene, trying to preserve the moment for eternity.

After our fill of natural wonders, we drove to Bielsa for a late lunch at Restaurante Parador de Bielsa. This restaurant is known for local mountain cuisine. The cozy ambiance, with its wooden floors and forge lamps, made it the perfect place to unwind. From the restaurant, we had spectacular views of the Pineta Valley and the Cinca River waterfalls. We savored the flavors of the region, enjoying local specialties such as Cinca trout and Aragonese lamb.

Before dinner, we stopped by Productos Ordesano in Broto. This shop specializes in premium gins, pacharán, liqueurs, and infusions from the Ordesa region. I picked up a bottle of Ginebra Premium Ordesano, a gin made with juniper and pears from the Broto Valley. The shop assistant told me the gin has hints of pine, elderflower, basil and citrus. I also bought some local herbal tea. These will be perfect for sharing with friends back in Montreal, allowing them to experience a taste of Ordesa.

For our final dinner, we chose Restaurante Bar Turieto in Torla. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming. We enjoyed a hearty meal of grilled meats and local wine. It was a fitting end to our culinary journey through the region.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the mountains, we made our way back to our campsite. We sat around the campfire, sharing stories and laughter, reminiscing about our adventures over the past ten days. It was a perfect ending to an unforgettable trip.

Tomorrow, we begin our journey back to Barcelona, and then onwards to Montreal. While I am eager to return home to my restaurant and family, a part of me will forever remain in the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park. This trip has not only allowed me to witness the breathtaking beauty of Spain but has also deepened my appreciation for nature and the importance of preserving it for future generations.

As I sit here, penning down my thoughts, I am filled with gratitude for this incredible experience. The Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park has left an indelible mark on my soul, and I know that I will carry its beauty with me wherever I go. Until next time, Ordesa – thank you for the memories.

I hope you have enjoyed reading about my travels. Stay tuned for more adventures!
