Reflecting on Our Assisi Adventure

As our family adventure in Assisi draws to a close, I find myself filled with a mix of contentment and a tinge of sadness. This trip has been more than just a vacation; it's been an immersion into history, culture, and the simple joys of family bonding. Today, our final day, we set out to explore some of Assisi's quieter, yet equally captivating, corners. Join me as we discover the serene beauty of Fonte Oliviera and the historical depths of Chiesa di San Pietro.

Our day began, as many of our mornings here have, with a delightful breakfast at Nonna Nini. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the promise of their unique fusion cuisine always sets a positive tone for the day. Nang was particularly excited about their vegan lentil soup, while Ananda couldn't resist the allure of their seasonal pasta. I opted for a simple yet satisfying plate of local cheeses and bread, a perfect start to fuel our explorations. It's amazing how a place blending Indian and Italian cuisine can feel so authentically Assisian. I remember when Nang and I first arrived in Montreal, opening our Thai restaurant felt like a huge risk, but seeing Nonna Nini thrive here in Italy gives me a sense of pride and connection.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in discovering new perspectives and connections.

After breakfast, we made our way to Fonte Oliviera. Nestled away from the bustling main streets, this ancient fountain offered a moment of tranquility. The cool, clear water trickling from the stone spouts was incredibly refreshing, and the peaceful atmosphere was a welcome respite. Ananda, ever the observant one, noticed the intricate carvings around the fountain, sparking a conversation about the history of water sources in ancient Assisi. It's moments like these, unplanned and spontaneous, that truly enrich our family trips. I couldn't help but think about the fountains back in Lampang, Thailand, where I grew up. They were more than just water sources; they were social hubs, places where communities gathered and stories were shared.

Next on our itinerary was the Chiesa di San Pietro, a church with roots stretching back to the 10th century. Located just outside the main city walls, it provided a sense of stepping back in time. The church's simple yet elegant façade was a stark contrast to the grandeur of the Basilica di San Francesco, but its historical significance was undeniable. Inside, we were greeted by stunning baroque decor and a sense of profound spirituality. Nang was particularly moved by the ancient crypt, which dates back to the church's earliest days. As we wandered through the dimly lit space, she shared stories of her own spiritual journey, a side of her I don't often see amidst the hustle and bustle of our daily lives. Ananda, meanwhile, was fascinated by the funerary monuments of the Soldani family, peppering me with questions about their history and significance. The Chiesa di San Pietro, with its layers of history and art, offered a perfect setting for reflection and connection.

For lunch, we decided to indulge in a special treat at Locanda del Podestà Restaurant. This place came highly recommended, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. The ambiance was elegant yet welcoming, and the service was impeccable. We started with a selection of local cured meats and cheeses, followed by their signature homemade pasta dishes. Nang opted for the gnocchi with gorgonzola, while Ananda chose the fillet with sagrantino reduction. I decided on the truffle risotto, a dish that perfectly captured the essence of Umbrian cuisine. Each bite was an explosion of flavors, a testament to the chef's skill and passion. As we savored our meal, we reminisced about our favorite moments from the trip, from the breathtaking views from the Rocca Maggiore to the spiritual experience of visiting the Basilica di San Francesco. It's these shared experiences, these moments of culinary delight, that create lasting memories.

In the late afternoon, we sought refuge from the warm sun at Caffè Duomo ASSISI, a charming café nestled in Piazza San Ruffino. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the promise of gelato were too enticing to resist. We ordered a round of cappuccinos and a selection of gelato flavors, from classic pistachio to rich chocolate. As we sat at our outdoor table, watching the world go by, we couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment. The café's relaxed atmosphere and friendly service made it the perfect spot to unwind and reflect on our day. I overheard snippets of conversations in Italian, a language I'm slowly learning, and felt a sense of connection to the local culture. It reminded me of the bustling coffee shops in Montreal, where people from all walks of life come together to share stories and connect.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to have our final dinner in Assisi at L'Oro dei Contadini. This osteria, recommended by a local, promised an authentic Umbrian dining experience, and it did not disappoint. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with exposed stone walls and rustic wooden furniture. We started with the strangozzi with truffles, followed by seared lamb. The dishes were hearty and flavorful, showcasing the region's culinary traditions. Nang was impressed with the attention paid to local ingredients, while Ananda appreciated the generous portions. I particularly enjoyed the friendly and efficient service, which made us feel right at home. The owner, Elena, even came over to chat with us, sharing stories about her family's history in Assisi. It's these personal connections, these moments of genuine hospitality, that make a dining experience truly memorable.

Tomorrow, we embark on our journey back to Montreal, carrying with us a treasure trove of memories and experiences. Assisi has captured our hearts, and we know we'll be back someday to explore its hidden corners and rediscover its timeless charm. As I reflect on our trip, I'm reminded of the importance of family, connection, and the simple joys of life. These are the values I strive to instill in my son, Ananda, and the values that guide our family's adventures. And as we prepare to leave, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with my loved ones. Assisi, you will be missed.

Now, as I sit down to write this blog post, I'm already thinking about our next adventure. Perhaps we'll explore the temples of Thailand, or maybe we'll venture into the Canadian Rockies. Wherever we go, I know that we'll carry the spirit of Assisi with us, a reminder to embrace the present moment, connect with the local culture, and cherish the bonds of family.
