Family Adventure in Assisi
Day 8: Angels and Waterways: A Day of Spiritual Reflection and Natural Beauty in Assisi
Explore the spiritual heart of Assisi at the Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli and discover the enchanting waterways of Rasiglia.
Spiritual Sanctuaries and Flowing Streams
Today was a day of contrasts, blending profound spiritual experiences with the simple, serene beauty of nature. Our family journey through Assisi took us from the hallowed halls of a major basilica to the tranquil, stream-laden village of Rasiglia. It was a day that touched both the soul and the senses, reminding me of the diverse beauty Italy holds.
We started our day with breakfast at Ristorante Pizzeria Monte Frumentario Nuova Gestione 2024. The reviews online were mixed, but we decided to give it a try, and I'm glad we did. The food was hearty and satisfying, perfect for fueling a day of exploration. Nang enjoyed a simple cornetto and cappuccino, while Ananda went for a more substantial breakfast of eggs and bacon. I opted for a local pastry, which was delightful. It wasn't the best breakfast we've had, but it was a solid start to the day.

Our first major stop was the Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli. This basilica is not just another church; it houses the Porziuncola, the tiny chapel where St. Francis of Assisi founded the Franciscan order. Stepping inside, I immediately felt a sense of peace wash over me. The grandeur of the basilica is striking, but it’s the small, unassuming Porziuncola at its heart that truly captivates. The contrast between the imposing structure built around it and the humble origins of St. Francis's mission is quite powerful.

I took some time to reflect on St. Francis's life and teachings. His commitment to poverty, simplicity, and love for all creation resonates deeply with me. I often think about how his principles could apply to our modern lives, especially in a world that often prioritizes material wealth over spiritual well-being. Nang lit a candle for her mother, and Ananda quietly observed the intricate artwork, a stark contrast to the bustling city life he's used to in Montreal.
The beauty of Assisi lies not just in its stunning architecture and landscapes, but in its ability to evoke a sense of peace and reflection, inviting us to connect with something larger than ourselves.
Leaving the basilica, we drove to Rasiglia, a small village known as the Little Venice of Umbria. The drive itself was beautiful, winding through rolling hills and picturesque countryside. As we approached Rasiglia, the sound of rushing water grew louder, signaling our arrival to this unique place. Rasiglia is famous for its network of streams and canals that run through the village, a testament to ingenious engineering and a deep connection to nature.

Walking through Rasiglia felt like stepping into a fairy tale. The crystal-clear water flowed along the narrow streets, under stone bridges, and past charming houses. The water once powered mills and workshops, and you can still see remnants of this industrial past. Ananda was particularly fascinated by the intricate system of waterways, snapping photos at every turn. Nang enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere, remarking how the sound of the water was incredibly soothing.
We learned that Rasiglia has only about 40 residents, but it attracts many visitors who come to admire its unique beauty. We strolled along the main street, stopping to admire the small shops selling local crafts and souvenirs. I bought a small watercolor painting of the village to remind me of this enchanting place. We also visited the Sanctuary, a small, peaceful spot offering a different kind of reflection compared to the grand basilica.
For lunch, we stopped at Ristorante il Vicoletto back in Assisi. Nestled in a tiny alley, it was a delightful find. The reviews I had read mentioned the excellent cuisine and cozy atmosphere, and it did not disappoint. We shared a variety of Umbrian specialties, including truffle pasta and grilled meats. The food was delicious, and the service was attentive. It was a perfect spot to relax and refuel after a busy day of sightseeing.

In the late afternoon, we took a break at Vino Osteria Winebar. I was in need of a drink, and this place came highly recommended. The wine selection was impressive, and I enjoyed a glass of local red wine while Nang and Ananda had some refreshing drinks. It was a great place to unwind and people-watch, observing the locals and tourists alike as they strolled through the town square.

Dinner was at Osteria del Corso Cucina & Sushi, a surprising but delightful combination. I was a bit skeptical about sushi in Umbria, but the reviews were positive, and we decided to try it. The restaurant offered both Italian and Japanese dishes, and we sampled a bit of both. The sushi was fresh and well-prepared, and the Italian dishes were equally impressive. It was a unique culinary experience that perfectly capped off our day of contrasts.

As the day winds down, I find myself reflecting on the blend of experiences. The Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli offered a moment of spiritual connection, reminding me of the values St. Francis championed. Rasiglia, with its flowing waters and tranquil setting, showcased the simple beauty of nature and the ingenuity of human adaptation. The combination of these two very different places made for a truly memorable day.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Papal Basilica and Sacred Convent of Saint Francis in Assisi, a site I'm particularly looking forward to. We'll also explore Porta San Giacomo and perhaps do some shopping at I Tre Archi. For dinner, we're booked at La Taverna del Norcino, which I’ve heard has amazing local cuisine. Before that, we plan to have breakfast at Ristorante Buca di San Francesco - ASSISI and lunch at Ristorante vino e cucina. It promises to be another day filled with history, culture, and culinary delights.
For now, though, I’m grateful for the experiences of today. It’s these moments, shared with my family, that make our travels so meaningful. Assisi continues to surprise and inspire, and I’m excited to see what tomorrow brings.
