First Day in Assisi: A Pilgrimage Begins

After a long journey from Montreal, with a layover in Rome and a connecting train to Assisi, we finally arrived at our destination. The air here is different—calmer, perhaps touched by the spirit of Saint Francis. I'm here with my beloved wife, Nang, and our son, Ananda, ready to immerse ourselves in the history and culture of this beautiful Italian town. I’m hoping this trip will give us a new perspective on life.

Our day started at La Fortezza Restaurant for breakfast. It was a delightful introduction to Italian cuisine. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee filled the air as we settled into a cozy corner. I opted for a simple yet classic Italian breakfast: a cappuccino and a cornetto, while Nang chose a selection of local cheeses and fruits. Ananda, ever the adventurous eater, went for a savory frittata.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we made our way to the Basilica of Saint Francis. As we approached, the sheer magnitude of the basilica took my breath away. The frescoes by Giotto were stunning, depicting scenes from the life of Saint Francis with vivid colors and remarkable detail. Nang was particularly moved by the artistry, while Ananda, with his keen eye for detail, was fascinated by the architectural nuances. The surrounding buildings, with their medieval architecture, added to the charm of the piazza. It felt like stepping back in time.

It was a sensory delight, and I couldn't resist purchasing a few bottles of wine and some artisanal chocolates to take back home.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Taverna dei Consoli for dinner. This restaurant, recommended by our hotel concierge, promised an authentic Umbrian dining experience. The ambiance was warm and inviting, with rustic décor and soft lighting. We started with a selection of local cured meats and cheeses, followed by hearty mains. I chose the roasted lamb, while Nang went for the homemade pasta with mushroom sauce. Ananda, still in adventurous mood, ordered the pigeon. The food was delicious, and the service was impeccable. It was the perfect way to end our first day in Assisi.

Before heading back to Hotel Porta Nuova, we took one last stroll through the Piazza del Comune. The square was quieter now, bathed in the soft glow of the streetlights. It was a magical moment, a perfect ending to a day filled with exploration and discovery.

Back at the hotel, I reflected on our first day in Assisi. It had been a whirlwind of sights, sounds, and flavors, a sensory feast that had left me feeling both exhilarated and humbled. From the awe-inspiring Basilica of Saint Francis to the bustling Piazza del Comune, from the exquisite truffle pasta to the flavorful local wines, every moment had been a testament to the beauty and richness of this Italian town. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with my family. I was already looking forward to tomorrow, when we plan to visit the Basilica di Santa Chiara, Rocca Maggiore, and Bosco di San Francesco. I hope the weather holds up! I forgot to pack an umbrella, which is a bit of a problem. Oh well, we will figure it out tomorrow.
