Solo Adventure on the Choquequirao Trek
Day 11: A Farewell Feast and Ancient Echoes: My Final Day in the Andes
Culinary delights in Cusco and a soul-stirring visit to Machu Picchu's Temple of the Moon mark the perfect end to my Peruvian adventure.
Whispers of the Past, Tastes of the Present
As my Peruvian adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey of the past eleven days. From the challenging heights of the Choquequirao Trek to the vibrant streets of Cusco, each experience has woven itself into the tapestry of my memories. Today, I embraced the final moments with a blend of historical exploration and culinary indulgence, savoring the last tastes of Peru before my journey back to Montreal.
My day began with an early breakfast at Inka Wasi Restaurant Cusco. The restaurant was conveniently located and offered a cozy atmosphere to enjoy my final Peruvian breakfast. Fuelled up, I set out to revisit Machu Picchu, this time with a specific destination in mind: the Temple of the Moon.

The journey to the Temple of the Moon was an adventure in itself. Located on Huayna Picchu, the trail was a steep and winding descent from the summit. The air was crisp, with a slight chill that reminded me of the mountain's altitude. As I descended, the crowds thinned, and I found myself surrounded by the serene beauty of the Andean landscape.

The Temple of the Moon is a unique and mysterious site. Carved into a natural cave, the stonework is a testament to the Incas' mastery of their craft. It's believed that the caves were used to hold mummies. The temple consists of three structural components: an overhanging cave with stonework, a double-jamb doorway, and other structures. The stonework is said to contain the three planes of the Incan religion: the Hanan Pacha (the heavens), the Kay Pacha (the earth), and the Ukju Pacha (the underworld). The temple also boasts niches and fake doors inserted in the stones, with an enormous entrance.
Exploring the temple, I felt a sense of profound connection to the past. The Incas held caves in high regard, believing them to be links to the world of the dead. The energy of the place was palpable, a quiet hum that resonated with the ancient stones. I spent a long time there, simply absorbing the atmosphere and contemplating the ingenuity and spirituality of the Inca civilization.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in the grand vistas, but in the hidden corners where history whispers its secrets.
Back in Cusco, my culinary exploration continued with lunch at Organika Restaurant. This charming establishment is known for its commitment to organic, locally-sourced ingredients. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, the perfect place to relax and reflect on my journey. I savored a delicious meal of traditional Peruvian dishes, each bite bursting with fresh, vibrant flavors.

After lunch, I ventured into the Mercado Central de San Pedro. This bustling market is a feast for the senses, a vibrant tapestry of colors, sounds, and smells. From fresh produce to local handicrafts, the market offered a glimpse into the daily life of the Cusqueños. I wandered through the aisles, soaking in the atmosphere and picking up a few souvenirs for Nang and Ananda.

As the day drew to a close, I treated myself to a farewell dinner at Chicha por Gaston Acurio. This renowned restaurant, helmed by one of Peru's most celebrated chefs, Gaston Acurio, offers a modern take on traditional Peruvian cuisine. The ambiance was elegant yet welcoming, and the menu was a culinary journey through the diverse flavors of Peru. I indulged in a causa, mashed native potatoes topped with trout, avocado, quail's egg and hot red pepper. It was the perfect ending to my Peruvian culinary adventure.
