Last Day Musings in Florence

As my Florentine adventure draws to a close, I find myself filled with a bittersweet blend of contentment and longing. This solo trip has been everything I hoped for and more—a deep dive into the heart of the Renaissance, punctuated by moments of quiet reflection and unexpected discoveries. Today, on my final day, I set out to absorb every last drop of Florentine charm before heading back to Berlin.

The crisp February air greeted me as I stepped out of Palazzo Graziani. Discover the historic charm and modern comforts of Palazzo Graziani, ideally located near Florence's iconic landmarks and attractions.

I skipped my usual run, deciding instead to take a leisurely stroll to Cuculia for breakfast. I had read about its unique atmosphere—a blend of restaurant, library, and art space—and I was eager to experience it myself. The reviews I'd seen online weren't wrong; it was a truly charming spot. The interior was cozy, filled with books and art, creating a welcoming space for a solo diner like myself. I enjoyed a simple yet delicious breakfast, fueling up for a day of exploration.

My first stop was the Florence National Central Library. As an English teacher with a deep appreciation for literature, I couldn't miss the opportunity to visit one of Italy's largest libraries. I was genuinely impressed by the sheer size of the collection and the hushed reverence that permeated the halls. I spent a couple of hours wandering through the reading rooms, imagining the countless scholars and writers who had sought inspiration within those walls. The library itself is a beautiful building, and I found myself appreciating the architecture almost as much as the books. I was fascinated to learn that the library holds nearly seven million printed volumes, 25,000 manuscripts, and 3,800 incunabula! It was a humbling experience to be surrounded by such a wealth of knowledge and history.

Leaving the library, I made my way towards Piazza della Repubblica. This square, steeped in history, has been a central point in Florence since Roman times. Originally the site of the city's forum, it later became the location of the old ghetto before undergoing significant redevelopment in the 19th century. Today, it’s a vibrant space filled with cafes, shops, and street performers. I paused for a moment to admire the Colonna della Dovizia, also known as the Column of Abundance, marking the spot where the cardus and decumanus maximi met in Roman times. The square was bustling with activity, and I enjoyed watching the locals and tourists alike soaking in the atmosphere. I even treated myself to a coffee at one of the historic cafes, Giubbe Rosse, a known meeting point for artists and writers, which gave me a great vantage point for people-watching.

For lunch, I decided to try All’Antico Vinaio, a place I had heard so much about. Known for its mouth-watering sandwiches, it seemed like the perfect spot for a quick and satisfying meal. I joined the queue, which, thankfully, moved relatively quickly. I opted for the vegan option, a focaccia stuffed with sun-dried tomatoes and spicy aubergines. It was absolutely delicious, the bread perfectly crisp, and the filling bursting with flavor. I found a nearby bench to sit and enjoy my sandwich, savoring every bite.

As the afternoon wore on, I allowed myself to simply wander through the streets of Florence, soaking in the sights and sounds of the city. The weather in Florence in February can be a bit unpredictable. While the forecast called for mild temperatures, I was glad I had layered my clothing. I explored the Oltrarno neighborhood, admiring the artisan workshops and the Ponte Vecchio, still marveling at how the shops are built along it. I even considered visiting the Inside Klimt exhibition at the Florence Cathedral of the Image, but decided to save it for another trip.

Before dinner, I took some time to reflect on my trip. It's funny, I almost forgot to pack my umbrella and sunglasses, but luckily remembered at the last minute! I found a quiet spot by the Arno River and watched the sun begin to set, casting a golden glow over the city. I thought about Greta and Lila back in Berlin, missing them dearly. While I cherish these solo adventures, I always look forward to sharing my experiences with them. I made a mental note to bring them back to Florence someday, to explore its wonders together.

For my final dinner, I chose Ristorante Belcore, drawn in by its reputation for exceptional Tuscan cuisine and a warm, inviting atmosphere. I wasn't disappointed. The service was impeccable, and the food was simply divine. I savored every bite of my meal, accompanied by a glass of local wine. The restaurant was cozy and intimate, the perfect setting for a farewell dinner.

As I walked back to Palazzo Graziani, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this incredible journey. Florence had captivated me with its art, history, and cuisine, offering a perfect blend of cultural immersion and personal reflection. This trip was a reminder of the importance of taking time for oneself, to explore new places, and to embrace the beauty of the world.

Tomorrow, I will be heading back to Berlin, filled with memories and inspiration. While I am eager to return to my family and my familiar routine, a part of me will always remain in Florence, wandering through its streets, admiring its art, and savoring its flavors. I am already looking forward to my next adventure, wherever it may take me.

Before I go, I wanted to share some of the events happening in Florence this February. I learned that the Carnival parade takes to the streets on February 9 and 15, and there's a grand masked charity ball held in the Salone dei Cinquecento on February 8. I also read about the Chianti Classico Collection wine fair at Stazione Leopolda on February 18. If you're planning a trip to Florence, be sure to check out these events!

Until next time, arrivederci from Florence!
