Solo Sojourn in Gros Morne: A Journey into Nature
Day 10: Farewell, Gros Morne: Reflecting on a Solo Adventure
Saying goodbye to Gros Morne National Park after ten days of solo exploration, filled with breathtaking landscapes and serene moments.
A Fond Farewell
As my ten-day solo journey through Gros Morne National Park draws to a close, I find myself filled with a mix of emotions. There's a sense of accomplishment, a tinge of sadness at leaving this natural paradise, and an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for the experiences I've had. This trip wasn't just about seeing beautiful landscapes; it was about connecting with myself and nature in a way that I haven't done in years.
My final day in Gros Morne began with a hearty breakfast at Neddies Harbour Inn. The Black Spruce Restaurant, nestled within the inn, offered a delightful start to the day. I opted for their classic breakfast, savoring every bite of the eggs, peameal bacon, fried potato, and fresh fruit. It was the perfect fuel for my last day of exploration. The Inn is beautiful, with its hillside location providing stunning views of Bonne Bay. It's the kind of place where you can truly escape the hustle and bustle of city life, a sentiment that resonated deeply with me after my time in Berlin.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set out to explore the town of Woody Point. This quaint town, located on the southern shore of Bonne Bay, is known for its stunning vistas and rich history. As I strolled along the waterfront, I couldn't help but admire the colorful buildings and the charming atmosphere. Woody Point is one of only a few Provincial Historic Districts, a testament to its significance in the history of Newfoundland.

My first stop in Woody Point was the Bonne Bay Marine Station in nearby Norris Point. This research and teaching facility is dedicated to educating visitors about the biology and ecology of marine life. I was fascinated by the exhibits showcasing local marine flora and fauna. The interactive aquarium tour provided a closer look at the diverse marine life in Bonne Bay. It was a great way to learn about the unique ecosystem of the area and appreciate the importance of marine conservation. Although one reviewer mentioned disappointment due to unexpected closure, I was fortunate to find it open and engaging.

The journey may be ending, but the memories and lessons learned will last a lifetime.
After immersing myself in marine biology, I decided to grab lunch at the Sunset Cafe. This cozy cafe offered a variety of options, and I settled on a hearty sandwich. The cafe's relaxed atmosphere and friendly service made it a perfect spot to recharge before continuing my exploration of Woody Point.

With renewed energy, I spent the afternoon wandering through the town's heritage district. The historic buildings, including the old Merchant's House and the Woody Point Lighthouse, offered a glimpse into the town's past. I also visited the Gros Morne National Park Discovery Centre, where I learned more about the park's geology, ecology, and cultural history. The Discovery Centre also provides access to the Lookout Trail, but I decided to save the hike for another visit.
As evening approached, I made my way to the Anchor Pub for a farewell dinner. This popular pub is known for its hearty menu featuring classic dishes and local seafood. I indulged in a delicious seafood meal, savoring the flavors of Newfoundland. The pub's warm ambiance and friendly staff created a perfect setting for reflecting on my journey through Gros Morne. The Anchor Pub is a great place to enjoy pub grub and a beer, and socialize with friends old and new.

After dinner, I decided to extend my evening at Bonne Bay Inn's Elements Pub. I enjoyed a glass of local beer while listening to some live music. The pub's cozy atmosphere and selection of local and international beers made it a perfect spot to unwind and enjoy the last moments of my trip.

As I sit here, penning this blog post, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences I've had in Gros Morne National Park. This solo journey has been a transformative experience, allowing me to reconnect with nature and myself. I've captured countless photos, filled pages of my travel journal, and created memories that will last a lifetime. I'm already looking forward to returning to Gros Morne, perhaps with Greta and Lila next time, to share the beauty and tranquility of this natural wonderland with my family. I know Lila would particularly enjoy the Bonne Bay Marine Station.
Tomorrow, I'll be heading to Deer Lake Airport to catch my flight back to Berlin. While I'm eager to return home to my family, I'll carry the spirit of Gros Morne with me, reminding me of the importance of solitude, nature, and self-discovery. This trip has not only provided content for my travel blog but has also enriched my soul. Perhaps I’ll even incorporate some of the Newfoundland dishes I enjoyed into my cooking back in Berlin, a little piece of Canada in my German kitchen. And who knows, maybe I'll even pick up some German idioms to share with the friendly locals when I return to Gros Morne!
As I prepare to leave, I am reminded of the importance of travel, not just as a means of seeing new places, but as a way of understanding ourselves and the world around us. Gros Morne has offered me a unique opportunity to do just that, and I am forever grateful for the experience.
Until next time, Gros Morne. Thank you for the memories.
