Echoes of the Earth's Mantle and Whispers of the Sea

Today was a day of stark contrasts and breathtaking beauty, a true testament to the diverse landscapes that Gros Morne National Park and its surroundings have to offer. I ventured from the rust-colored, otherworldly terrain of the Tablelands, each location leaving me in awe of nature's power and artistry. It's days like these that remind me why I traded the familiar comforts of Berlin for the unpredictable allure of the open road.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Seaside Restaurant in Trout River. I savored every bite of the fresh seafood, knowing I needed the energy for the day ahead. The restaurant, a family-owned establishment with nautical and rustic themes, offered stunning views of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, a perfect backdrop to start my day. It felt like a true Newfoundland experience, a world away from my usual mornings in Berlin. I made a mental note to tell Greta and Lila all about it; they would have loved the cozy atmosphere and the promise of a Newfoundland-style meal.

Fueled and ready, I set off for the Tablelands. The drive itself was mesmerizing, the landscape transforming into a geological wonder. As I approached, the ochre hues of the Tablelands began to dominate the horizon, a stark contrast to the greens and blues I'd grown accustomed to in Gros Morne. It felt like stepping onto another planet.

The Tablelands are unlike anything I've ever seen. Walking along the Tablelands Trail, I felt an almost surreal sense of being on the Earth's mantle, a place normally hidden far beneath the crust. The reddish-orange rock formations stretched out before me, barren yet beautiful, a testament to the immense forces that shaped our planet. I opted for the 4-km return trail that skirts the base of the mountain, eager to immerse myself in this unique environment.

I decided to explore without a guide, wanting to absorb the landscape at my own pace. The trail was gentle, allowing me to truly appreciate the unusual plants that have adapted to this harsh environment. Despite the lack of lush vegetation, there was a subtle beauty in the resilience of these tiny plants, clinging to life in this seemingly desolate place. I thought about Lila and how she would be fascinated by the strange, alien-like environment. I could already imagine her collecting unique rocks and asking endless questions about how this place came to be.

The earth has music for those who listen.

As I walked, I imagined the continents colliding millions of years ago, pushing these rocks, once beneath the ocean, to their present position. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the vastness of time and the power of geological processes. The silence was profound, broken only by the occasional gust of wind, carrying with it the whispers of ancient stories.

After spending a few hours exploring the Tablelands, I drove north towards The Arches Provincial Park. The change in scenery was dramatic, from the rugged, rocky interior to the windswept coastline. The drive along Route 430 was scenic, with glimpses of the ocean and charming coastal communities.

Arriving at The Arches, I was immediately struck by the raw beauty of the coastline. The park is named for its most prominent feature: a series of natural rock arches carved by the relentless pounding of the sea. I learned that originally there were four arches, but one had collapsed over time, a testament to the ongoing forces of erosion.

I parked the car and followed the boardwalk down to the beach, eager to get a closer look at these magnificent formations. The pebbled beach stretched out before me, leading to the imposing arches that stood defiantly against the crashing waves. The arches were impressive, sculpted by millennia of tidal action, each one a unique work of art.

I spent a long time exploring the area, walking along the beach, and admiring the arches from different angles. I even ventured underneath one of the arches, feeling the cool spray of the ocean and marveling at the power of the waves that had carved this natural wonder. The sound of the ocean was mesmerizing, a constant roar that echoed against the rocks. The Arches Provincial Park was a photographer’s dream. The play of light and shadow on the rocks, the crashing waves, and the rugged coastline created endless opportunities for capturing stunning images. I felt a surge of inspiration, ideas for new blog posts and photography projects swirling in my mind. It was moments like these that made me feel truly alive, connected to the natural world in a way that I never experienced in the city.

After a day of exploring, I was ready for a good meal. I headed to Rocky Harbour and had lunch at The Old Loft Restaurant. The restaurant is known for its traditional Newfoundland meals and seafood, and I was eager to try some local specialties. The rustic setting and atmosphere of the restaurant added to the charm, making it a memorable dining experience. I enjoyed a hearty meal of fish and chips, savoring the fresh flavors and the warm hospitality of the staff.

Before heading back to my campsite, I stopped by Aunt Sarah's Chocolate Shop in Rocky Harbour. I couldn't resist indulging in some locally handmade chocolates, a sweet treat to end the day. I picked up a few extra chocolates to bring back to Greta and Lila, knowing they would appreciate the gesture. As I savored the rich, creamy chocolate, I reflected on the day's adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the natural wonders of Gros Morne.

For dinner, I decided to try Buoy & Arrow Restaurant and Suites. Located in the heart of Rocky Harbour, it’s known for its harborfront views and Newfoundland cuisine. I enjoyed a delicious meal while watching the sunset over the water. The atmosphere was relaxing, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration.

As I settled back at my campsite, the stars began to emerge, blanketing the sky in a dazzling display of light. I thought about tomorrow, my last day in Gros Morne, and the plans I had to visit the Bonne Bay Marine Station and the town of Woody Point. I was already feeling a pang of sadness that my solo sojourn was coming to an end, but I knew I would carry the memories of this incredible journey with me always.

Before drifting off to sleep, I made a mental note to finally order that portable phone charger I had forgotten. It would definitely come in handy during future adventures. And perhaps some insect repellent too!

Gros Morne, you have truly captured my heart. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.
