A Warm Newfoundland Welcome

After months of planning and anticipation, I've finally arrived in Gros Morne National Park! The journey from Berlin to Deer Lake was long, but the moment I picked up my rental car and started driving towards the park, I knew it was all worth it. There’s something about the crisp air and the vast, open landscapes that just makes you feel alive. I'm eager to immerse myself in the natural beauty of this UNESCO World Heritage Site and share my experiences with you all.

My first stop was the Gros Morne Entrance Kiosk, Wiltondale. The Parks Canada staff were incredibly helpful, providing me with maps, permits, and essential information about the park. It's always reassuring to receive such a warm welcome, especially when embarking on a solo adventure. They gave me some great tips about the local trails and the best spots for photography. I also learned about some of the park's history and its unique geological features. Gros Morne, meaning large mountain standing alone, truly lives up to its name.

Before delving deeper into the park, I decided to grab a bite at The Old Store Cafe in Wiltondale. It was a cozy little place with a friendly atmosphere. I ordered a hearty breakfast of eggs, bacon, and toast, which was the perfect fuel for the day ahead. The cafe seemed to be a local favorite, with folks chatting and laughing over their morning coffee. It was a great way to get a feel for the community.

With a full stomach and a sense of excitement, I officially entered Gros Morne National Park. The sheer scale of the place is breathtaking. Towering cliffs, deep fjords, and lush forests stretch as far as the eye can see. The park covers an area of 1,805 square kilometers, making it the second-largest national park in Atlantic Canada. I made sure to stop at several roadside viewpoints to capture the stunning panoramas of Bonne Bay and the Long Range Mountains. The weather in October can be unpredictable, but today, I was lucky to have clear skies and sunshine. The temperature was cool, but not too cold, perfect for hiking and exploring.

As the day progressed, I made my way to Rocky Harbour, the largest town in the region. This charming coastal community is known as the gateway to Gros Morne and offers a variety of amenities and activities for visitors. I strolled along Main Street, admiring the colorful houses and the bustling harbor. The town has a vibrant arts scene, with several galleries and craft shops showcasing the work of local artists.

For lunch, I chose Java Jack's Restaurant & Gallery. This place came highly recommended, and I was eager to try their fresh seafood. I ordered the fish and chips, which were absolutely delicious. The fish was perfectly cooked, and the chips were crispy and golden brown. The restaurant itself was cozy and inviting, with local art adorning the walls. I learned that Java Jack's has been a local institution since 2000, known for its good coffee and great bag lunches. It was recently taken over by new owners, Mandy and Steve Payne, but still maintains the same high standards.

After lunch, I explored some of the local shops. At Gros Morne Crafts & Oceanside Cottage, I found a wide array of handcrafted goods made by talented local artisans. From intricate woodwork to vibrant textiles, each piece told a story of the culture and heritage of the region. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-knitted scarf as a souvenir for Greta and a small wooden toy for Lila. I always try to bring back something special for my family from my travels. The owner, Michael, was very friendly and shared some interesting stories about the local craft scene.

As evening approached, I checked into my campsite and prepared for dinner. For my first night in Gros Morne, I decided to dine at Anchor Pub in Rocky Harbour. The pub had a lively atmosphere, with locals and tourists mingling and enjoying the music. I ordered a classic pub burger with home fries, which was hearty and satisfying. The Anchor Pub is known for its great service and friendly staff, and I certainly experienced that firsthand. I also sampled some of Newfoundland’s own Quidi Vidi specialty beers.

As I sit here now, writing in my travel journal, I can't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to explore such a magnificent place. The people of Newfoundland are incredibly warm and welcoming, and the natural beauty of Gros Morne is simply awe-inspiring. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures, which include a boat tour of Western Brook Pond and a visit to Broom Point. I'm also hoping to check out Western Newfoundland Brewing Co. for a taste of local craft beer.

Tonight, as I settle into my tent, I'm filled with a sense of peace and excitement. Gros Morne has already captured my heart, and I know that the next nine days will be filled with unforgettable experiences. I'm eager to share more of my journey with you all, so stay tuned for more updates from this incredible corner of Canada.

The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.

Before drifting off to sleep, I made sure to charge my camera and organize my gear for tomorrow. I realized I had forgotten my portable phone charger, a rookie mistake! Luckily, I have a spare battery pack for my camera, but I'll need to be mindful of my phone's battery life. I also wished I had packed insect repellent, as the mosquitoes were quite active in the evening. Note to self: always double-check the essentials!

As I reflect on my first day, I'm struck by the sheer beauty and tranquility of Gros Morne National Park. The towering cliffs, pristine waters, and lush forests create a landscape that is both awe-inspiring and humbling. It's a place where you can truly connect with nature and find a sense of peace and solitude. I'm reminded of a quote by John Muir:

In every walk with nature, one receives far more than he seeks.

I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings and to continue exploring the hidden gems of this remarkable park. I hope you'll join me on this journey!

Thinking back to my experiences today, I can’t help but draw parallels to my life back in Berlin. While I love the city's vibrant energy and cultural scene, there's something deeply restorative about being surrounded by nature. It's a chance to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with myself. I often find that my best ideas and insights come to me when I'm immersed in nature, whether it's hiking in the Thai mountains or exploring the parks of Berlin.

I'm also reminded of my family back home. I miss Greta and Lila dearly, but I know that this solo journey is important for my own personal growth and inspiration. I plan to bring back stories and photos that will inspire Lila's imagination and remind Greta of the beauty and wonder of our world. Perhaps one day, we'll all return to Gros Morne together and create new memories as a family.

The weather in Gros Morne in October can be quite variable. The average temperature ranges from a high of 9°C (48°F) to a low of 3°C (38°F). It's also quite windy, with an average wind speed of 23.4 kph (14.5 mph). There's a 46% chance of rain or snow on any given day. So, it's important to be prepared for all types of weather. I made sure to pack warm clothing, including layers, a waterproof jacket, and sturdy hiking boots.

Gros Morne National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its unique geological features. The park showcases the process of continental drift, where deep ocean crust and the rocks of the Earth's mantle lie exposed. This makes it a fascinating destination for geology enthusiasts. The park also has a rich cultural history, with evidence of human settlement dating back thousands of years.

As I reflect on my day, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude and excitement. I'm grateful for the opportunity to explore this incredible place and to share my experiences with you all. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings and to continue discovering the wonders of Gros Morne National Park. I hope you'll join me on this journey!

The Gros Morne Hiking Festival typically takes place in September. The Gros Morne Fall Festival & Craft Fair usually happens in late September as well. However, there will be a Gros Morne Hiking Festival from September 12th – 18th, 2025.

I'm also looking forward to trying some more local cuisine. Newfoundland is known for its fresh seafood, including cod, lobster, and mussels. I'm also eager to try some traditional Newfoundland dishes, such as fish and brewis, toutons, and bakeapples. I've heard that the local restaurants in Rocky Harbour offer a wide variety of culinary delights, so I'm sure I won't be disappointed.

As the sun sets over Gros Morne National Park, I'm filled with a sense of awe and wonder. The sky is painted with vibrant hues of orange, pink, and purple, creating a breathtaking spectacle. I feel so fortunate to be here, experiencing this natural beauty firsthand. It's a reminder of the importance of preserving these precious places for future generations. I hope that my blog will inspire others to explore the world and to appreciate the beauty of our planet.

And now, it's time for me to bid you goodnight. Thank you for joining me on this adventure. I'll be back tomorrow with more stories and photos from Gros Morne National Park. Until then, take care and keep exploring!
