Today was nothing short of magical. Waking up with the crisp mountain air filling my lungs, I knew this day would be etched in my memory forever. It was a day of exploring ancient wonders and savoring the flavors of Peru, a true feast for the senses. I'm so excited to share every moment with you all!

Our day began with an early start, fueled by anticipation and a hearty breakfast at Tampu Restaurant at Sanctuary Lodge. The restaurant itself is gorgeous, with floor-to-ceiling windows that offer incredible views. Apparently it's exclusively for guests, so I felt very lucky! The setting was perfect for soaking in the morning light and preparing for our adventures ahead. The breakfast buffet was amazing, with a wide variety of Peruvian and international options. I particularly enjoyed the fresh fruit and the strong, aromatic coffee, which gave me the energy I needed for the day's hike.

After breakfast, we set out to explore the famed Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. While our group isn't doing the full trek, we wanted to experience a portion of this historic path. The trail was more than just a hike; it was a journey through time, with each stone step whispering stories of the Inca civilization. The views were simply breathtaking, with lush greenery, vibrant flowers, and the majestic mountains all around us. It was easy to see why the Inca people considered this place sacred.

As we hiked, I couldn't help but think about Greta and Lila back in Berlin. I wished they could have been here to experience this with me. Lila would have loved running through the trails, discovering all the hidden corners of this ancient city. I made a mental note to bring them back someday, to share this incredible experience with my family. I know Greta would find inspiration in the intricate stonework and rich history of Machu Picchu, much like she finds beauty in the aged pages of the books she cares for in the library.

Sometimes, the greatest journeys are those that take us back to ourselves.

Next on our itinerary was a visit to Mirador Viva el Perú, a scenic overlook that offers panoramic views of Cusco and the surrounding Andes mountains. The vista was truly spectacular, with the city's terracotta rooftops creating a warm, inviting tapestry against the backdrop of the towering peaks. I spent some time simply taking in the view, trying to capture the essence of this magical place in my mind. I imagined what it must have been like for the Inca people, living in harmony with nature in this awe-inspiring landscape.

For lunch, we ventured to Julian Restaurant, a charming eatery known for its authentic Peruvian dishes. The restaurant had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly. I decided to try the lomo saltado, a classic Peruvian stir-fry with beef, onions, tomatoes, and potatoes. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the country's vibrant culinary heritage. My friends opted for the trout and some pizza, and we shared stories and laughter over our meal.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Restaurant Bistro Bar Indio Feliz for dinner. This place is an experience in itself, with an eccentric, pirate-themed decor that creates a fun, enchanting atmosphere. The restaurant is owned by a Frenchman named Patrick, who was inspired by the happy locals of Aguas Calientes. The fusion cuisine, blending Peruvian classics with international flavors, was outstanding. I savored every bite of the quinoa soup, mango salmon, and pepper chicken, each dish a burst of fresh, flavorful ingredients. We enjoyed generous portions and the service was great.

To cap off our incredible day, we decided to visit Sassy Bar & Lounge for a nightcap. The bar had a relaxed, sophisticated vibe, and the cocktails were expertly crafted. I ordered a Pisco Sour, Peru's national drink, and savored its tangy, refreshing flavor. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with wonder and adventure.

Reflecting on the day, I feel incredibly grateful for the opportunity to experience the magic of Machu Picchu. It was more than just a tourist destination; it was a place that touched my soul, a reminder of the power of nature and the ingenuity of the human spirit. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, as we continue our trek along the Salkantay Trail, heading towards Intipata. I'm especially excited about visiting Munaycha Outdoor, a shop that I hope will have the portable phone charger I forgot to pack!

It is far better to travel than to arrive, as Buddha said. I am definitely enjoying this journey.
