Whispers of the Past in Machu Picchu
Today was the day I had been anticipating since Greta and I first started planning this trip – our visit to Machu Picchu. Nestled high in the Andes Mountains, this ancient city has always held a special allure for me, a place where history and nature intertwine in the most breathtaking way. I couldn't wait to explore its mysteries and soak in its spiritual energy.
The morning began early, with a hearty breakfast at Mapacho Craft Beer Restaurant. The reviews I had read online raved about their traditional Peruvian dishes, and I was eager to start the day with a taste of local flavor. I opted for a classic desayuno – fresh bread, avocado, and a strong cup of Peruvian coffee. The restaurant had a lovely view of the surrounding mountains, and the atmosphere was buzzing with excitement as fellow travelers prepared for their own Machu Picchu adventures.

After breakfast, we made our way to the entrance of Machu Picchu, where the sheer scale of the site immediately struck me. The weather in Machu Picchu in November can be variable, and today was no exception. While the sun peeked through the clouds intermittently, there was a definite chill in the air. I was glad I had packed layers, including my trusty waterproof jacket, as rain showers are common this time of year.
The stones of Machu Picchu whisper stories of a civilization lost to time, yet resonate with an enduring spirit.
Our first stop was the Sacred Rock. As I stood before this massive monolith, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and reverence. The Incas believed that rocks and mountains were living entities, and this particular rock was considered a vital link between the earthly and spiritual realms. I took a moment to close my eyes and connect with the energy of this sacred place, feeling a deep sense of peace wash over me.

Next, we explored the various sectors of Machu Picchu, marveling at the intricate stonework and ingenious engineering of the Inca civilization. Our guide shared fascinating insights into the history and culture of the Incas, painting a vivid picture of life in this ancient city. I learned about their sophisticated agricultural techniques, their complex social structure, and their profound connection to the natural world.
For lunch, we ventured to El museo de la papa rest, a restaurant dedicated to celebrating the humble potato. Peru is known for its incredible variety of potatoes, and this restaurant showcased the versatility of this staple ingredient. I savored a delicious potato stew, packed with local herbs and spices, and washed it down with a refreshing Inca Kola. It was a truly authentic culinary experience.

As the afternoon wore on, we made our way to the Salkantay Trek Machu Picchu viewpoint, where we were rewarded with panoramic views of the entire site. From this vantage point, I could fully appreciate the strategic location of Machu Picchu, nestled amidst towering peaks and lush valleys. It was a truly awe-inspiring sight, one that I will never forget.

Before leaving Machu Picchu, I took some time to wander through the souvenir shops, hoping to find a special memento to bring back home to Greta and Lila. I finally settled on a beautiful hand-woven tapestry depicting the iconic image of Machu Picchu. I knew they would both love it.
For dinner, we decided to try Govinda Restaurant VEGANO, an Indian restaurant that had caught my eye earlier in the day. As someone who enjoys exploring diverse culinary traditions, I was intrigued by the idea of vegan Indian food in the heart of Peru. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, and the aroma of spices filled the air. I ordered a flavorful thali, a platter of various vegetarian dishes, and was delighted by the explosion of flavors and textures. It was a truly satisfying meal, and I was impressed by the creativity and skill of the chefs.

Before heading back to our accommodation, I made a quick stop at Speedy Gonzalo Camping Equipment to pick up a portable phone charger, remembering how crucial it is to keep my devices juiced up for capturing all these incredible moments. I also grabbed an extra pair of socks, heeding the advice of seasoned trekkers who know the value of dry feet on long journeys. It's always the little things you forget, isn't it?

As I reflect on today's experience, I am filled with gratitude and wonder. Machu Picchu is more than just a collection of ancient ruins; it's a place where the past comes alive, where the spirit of the Inca civilization lingers in the air. I feel incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to explore this sacred site and connect with its rich history and culture.
Tomorrow, we will continue our exploration of the Sacred Valley with a visit to Juchuy Coscco and Ollantaytambo Sanctuary. I am eager to discover more of the hidden gems of this region and delve deeper into the mysteries of the Inca civilization. I'm especially looking forward to unwinding at Multiverso Resto-Bar in the evening.
Even though this trip is nearing its end, I know that the memories and experiences I have gained here will stay with me for a lifetime. Peru has captured my heart with its stunning landscapes, rich culture, and warm hospitality. It is a place that I will always cherish, and I hope to return someday soon, perhaps with Greta and Lila in tow, to share its wonders with them.
And as I prepare for our final day of exploration, I am reminded of a quote that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of adventure:
To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.
Good night from Machu Picchu, and stay tuned for more tales from the Sacred Valley!
Today was a reminder of why I love to travel – for the chance to learn, to grow, and to connect with the world in a meaningful way. And as an English teacher, what better way to expand my horizons than by exploring ancient civilizations and sharing my experiences with all of you?
I'm also grateful for my friends who joined me on this adventure. Traveling with friends has made this experience even more special. Sharing laughter, stories, and the occasional travel mishap has created memories that we will cherish for years to come.
And while I miss Greta and Lila dearly, I know that they are with me in spirit, cheering me on from afar. I can't wait to share all my stories and photos with them when I return home to Berlin. Until then, I will continue to embrace the present moment and savor every experience that comes my way.
Speaking of Berlin, I've been thinking about how this experience might influence my teaching. Perhaps I can incorporate some of the Inca history and culture into my lessons, sparking my students' curiosity and inspiring them to explore the world beyond our classroom. It's amazing how travel can enrich our lives and broaden our perspectives, both personally and professionally.
As the stars begin to twinkle above Machu Picchu, I am filled with a sense of peace and contentment. Today has been a dream come true, a journey into the heart of a lost civilization. And as I drift off to sleep, I can't help but wonder what adventures tomorrow will bring. Goodnight, world, and may your dreams be filled with wonder and wanderlust.
