Amazonian Adventure: Exploring Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve
Day 7: Amazonian Echoes: Discovering Hidden Wonders in Cuyabeno
Embark on an unforgettable journey through Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve, where nature's symphony and thrilling adventures await at every turn.
Whispers of the Wild
Today was a day where the Amazon truly whispered its secrets to us. After several days of immersion, the jungle began to reveal its hidden wonders, offering glimpses into its intricate web of life. It was a day of both exhilarating exploration and tranquil reflection, a reminder of nature's delicate balance and the importance of preserving such precious ecosystems.
Our day began, as most do here at Jamu Lodge, with the sounds of the rainforest awakening. The symphony of birdsong, the rustling of leaves, and the distant calls of monkeys created a natural alarm clock that I was more than happy to embrace. After a hearty breakfast at the lodge, Liam and I set out early, eager to explore more of the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve. Our destination for the morning was Parque Nacional Cayambe-Coca, a place I’d been eagerly anticipating visiting.

The journey to the park was an adventure in itself. We travelled by motorized canoe along the waterways, the cool morning air a welcome contrast to the humidity that would surely build as the day progressed. Along the way, our guide, Mateo, pointed out various species of birds, his knowledge seemingly endless. I managed to catch a glimpse of a Hoatzin, a bird that looks like a cow, as Mateo described it, because it is ruminant like her.
Arriving at Parque Nacional Cayambe-Coca, we were immediately struck by the dramatic change in landscape. Leaving behind the dense rainforest, we found ourselves surrounded by snow-capped volcanoes and icy lagoons. The park spans a vast range of ecosystems, from cloud forests to high-altitude grasslands, each teeming with unique flora and fauna. We opted for a moderate hike, eager to stretch our legs and immerse ourselves in this new environment. The trails were well-maintained, but the altitude definitely added a level of challenge. I found myself pausing frequently to catch my breath, but each stop offered a new breathtaking view.
Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.
One of the highlights of our hike was spotting a spectacled bear in the distance. Mateo explained that the park is home to a significant population of these vulnerable creatures, and we felt incredibly fortunate to have witnessed one in its natural habitat. We also saw condors soaring overhead, their massive wings casting shadows on the landscape below. It was a truly awe-inspiring sight.
After a couple of hours of hiking, we made our way back to the canoe, our minds filled with the beauty of Cayambe-Coca. The journey back to Cuyabeno Lodge was peaceful, the gentle rocking of the boat lulling us into a state of relaxation. Lunch at the lodge was a welcome treat, and we enjoyed a delicious meal of fresh fish and local vegetables.
In the afternoon, we set out again, this time to explore Sangay National Park. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is known for its active volcanoes and rich biodiversity. As we approached the park, the landscape transformed once again, the snow-capped peaks giving way to rugged terrain and lush forests.

The park is home to two active volcanoes, Tungurahua and Sangay, and the extinct El Altar volcano. Unfortunately, we couldn't get too close to the active volcanoes due to safety concerns, but the views from a distance were still spectacular. Mateo shared stories of the volcanoes' eruptions and their impact on the surrounding environment, adding a sense of drama to the already impressive landscape.
Sangay National Park boasts an incredible array of wildlife, and we were eager to spot some of its iconic species. We kept our eyes peeled for jaguars, pumas, and tapirs, but they remained elusive. However, we did see a variety of birds, including the Andean cock-of-the-rock, with its vibrant plumage.
As the sun began to set, we made our way to Caiman Lodge for a drink. This lodge is known for its prime location near Laguna Grande, accessible by canoe year-round. Sipping our drinks, we watched as the sky transformed into a canvas of oranges, pinks, and purples. The reflection of the sunset on the lagoon was simply magical, a perfect ending to a day filled with natural wonders.

Back at Jamu Lodge for dinner, Liam and I recounted our adventures, our voices filled with excitement. The day had been a whirlwind of exploration, taking us from the rainforest to the highlands, from tranquil lagoons to active volcanoes. It was a testament to the incredible diversity of Ecuador and the importance of preserving its natural treasures.
As I sit here now, writing in my travel journal, I can still hear the echoes of the Amazon in my mind. The whispers of the wild, the calls of the birds, the rustling of the leaves – they are all a reminder of the beauty and fragility of this incredible ecosystem. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Mindo Cloudforest Foundation and Suchipakari Amazon Eco Lodge & Jungle Spa, and I’m excited to see what new adventures await. I’m also hoping to pick up a portable solar charger at the Cuyabeno River Lodge; I really wish I hadn’t forgotten that! Good thing I remembered my travel journal, though! I couldn’t imagine recalling all these amazing details without it.
Before drifting off to sleep, I thought about how lucky Liam and I are to be able to experience all of this together. To share these incredible moments, to learn and grow together, to appreciate the beauty of our planet – it’s what makes our marriage so strong and fulfilling. As we continue our journey through the Amazon, I know that we will continue to be amazed, inspired, and forever changed by the wonders of nature.
The Amazon has a way of seeping into your soul, leaving an indelible mark that will stay with you long after you’ve left its embrace. It’s a place of magic, mystery, and endless discovery, and I am so grateful to be able to share its wonders with you all. Good night from the heart of the Amazon!
