A Day of Florentine Grandeur
Today was a day of experiencing Florence in all its glory, from the solemn beauty of its basilicas to the breathtaking views that stretch across the city. Erika and I embarked on a journey through art, history, and culinary delights, creating memories that I know we will cherish for years to come.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Ristorante Santa Elisabetta. The restaurant, nestled within a 12th-century Byzantine tower, offered a truly unique and intimate setting. Only ten tables occupied the space, creating an ambiance that felt both exclusive and personal. Erika and I savored each bite, appreciating the elegant and refined atmosphere. This was a perfect beginning to our Florentine adventure.
With our appetites satisfied, we set out to explore the Basilica of Santa Croce. As an antique shop owner, I'm naturally drawn to historical landmarks, and Santa Croce did not disappoint. The sheer scale of the basilica is awe-inspiring; it’s the largest Franciscan church in the world. Legend has it that St. Francis himself founded the church, and construction began in 1294, funded by some of Florence's wealthiest families. The design reflects the Franciscans' austere approach, yet the interior is rich with art and history. The basilica is known as the Temple of Italian Glories, serving as the final resting place for some of Italy's most notable figures. To walk among the tombs of Michelangelo, Galileo, and Machiavelli was a humbling experience. I felt a profound connection to the past, a sense of standing in the presence of giants who shaped the course of history. Erika, with her librarian's love of knowledge, was equally captivated by the stories and legacies held within these walls.
The sixteen chapels within the basilica are adorned with frescoes by Giotto and his pupils, each telling a story from the Bible or the life of St. Francis. These artworks offer a glimpse into the artistic styles of the 14th century, showcasing the evolution of Florentine art. The stained-glass windows, dating from the 14th to the 19th centuries, cast a colorful glow on the interior, adding to the basilica's ethereal atmosphere. We spent hours wandering through the basilica, admiring the art and architecture, and reflecting on the lives of those who came before us. Santa Croce is not just a church; it’s a living testament to Florence's rich cultural heritage.

Florence is a city that speaks to the soul, offering a blend of history, art, and beauty that is simply unparalleled.
Leaving the Basilica of Santa Croce, we made our way to All’Antico Vinaio for lunch. I had heard so much about this place and its incredible panini, and I was eager to try them for myself. The line was long, stretching down the street, but it moved quickly. The atmosphere was lively, with the staff calling out orders and joking with customers. It felt like a true Florentine experience. Erika and I both ordered sandwiches, and we were not disappointed. The focaccia was perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and the ingredients were fresh and flavorful. I chose a sandwich with Tuscan peppered prosciutto, mozzarella, tomatoes, basil, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar. It was like a caprese salad on steroids.
After our satisfying lunch, we headed towards Piazzale Michelangelo. The walk up was a bit of a climb, but the views along the way were worth it. The Viale dei Colli, a tree-lined street winding up the hill of San Miniato, offered glimpses of the city below. I could see the Arno River snaking through Florence, the Ponte Vecchio spanning its banks, and the Duomo dominating the skyline. By the time we reached Piazzale Michelangelo, I was already captivated by the beauty of Florence, but the view from the top was simply stunning.
Piazzale Michelangelo is a large square built in 1869 as part of an urban renewal project. It is dedicated to Michelangelo, and bronze copies of some of his most famous works, including David and the allegories of the Medici Chapel, stand in the square. But the real draw of Piazzale Michelangelo is the panoramic view of Florence. From this vantage point, you can see the entire city spread out before you, from the Forte Belvedere to Santa Croce. The Duomo, Palazzo Vecchio, and the Bargello stand out against the backdrop of the Tuscan hills. Erika and I spent a long time at Piazzale Michelangelo, taking in the view and snapping photos. It was a perfect moment, a chance to appreciate the beauty and history of Florence from a unique perspective. Despite the crowds, there was a sense of peace and serenity, a feeling of being connected to something larger than ourselves.

Our final stop for the day was Palazzo Pitti. This imposing palace, originally built for the Pitti family in the 15th century, later became the residence of the Medici family and served as a symbol of their power and wealth. Today, Palazzo Pitti is divided into five museums, each offering a glimpse into different aspects of Florentine history and art. We focused on the Palatine Gallery and the Gallery of Modern Art. The Palatine Gallery houses a vast collection of paintings from the Medici family, including works by Raphael, Titian, and Rubens. The paintings are displayed in opulent rooms, adorned with frescoes, stuccoes, and gilded frames. The Gallery of Modern Art showcases Italian paintings and sculptures from the 18th century to the early 20th century, offering a contrast to the Renaissance art of the Palatine Gallery. I was particularly drawn to the works of the Macchiaioli, a group of Italian painters who were precursors to the Impressionists.

Before dinner, Erika and I popped into Mio Concept Store. The store, which specializes in artisan-made goods including bespoke jewelry, art, souvenirs and journals, had a chic, modern feel and offered excellent service. It was the perfect place to find unique lamps, artworks, and chic items for the home. I picked up a small antique map, adding to my collection. Erika found a beautiful journal, which she plans to use for her writing.

Finally, as the day drew to a close, we made our way to Il Palagio for dinner. This Michelin-starred restaurant, nestled within the Four Seasons Hotel Florence, offered an impeccable service together with a refined and elegant ambient. The restaurant is elegantly appointed, and the service was very professional and friendly. Executive Chef Paolo Lavezzini will arouse your curiosity with contemporary dishes filled with playful surprises, tinting your senses with flavors, perfumes and consistencies. The most genuine seasonal ingredients are served, all of them from Tuscany and the Tyrrhenian sea, and some directly from the Gherardesca Garden. We chose the tasting menu, and each course was a work of art, a symphony of flavors and textures that delighted the senses. The service was impeccable, and the ambiance was elegant and refined. It was the perfect way to end our day of Florentine grandeur.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Boboli Gardens, the Florence Academy of Fine Arts, and the Basilica di Santo Spirito. I am particularly excited to see Michelangelo’s David at the Academy and to explore the gardens. Before dinner at Ristorante Borgo San Jacopo, we might also check out Antico Caffè del Moro - Art Bar Firenze. I am sure it will be another day filled with beauty, history, and culinary delights. I am so grateful to be sharing this experience with Erika, my partner in life and travel. Together, we are exploring the Renaissance wonders of Florence, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
