Echoes of the Past

Today, Erika and I ventured deeper into the heart of Herculaneum, eager to uncover more of its secrets. With each passing day, I find myself increasingly captivated by the stories etched into these ancient stones. It's a privilege to walk where Romans once strolled, to imagine their lives unfolding within these remarkably preserved walls. As an antique shop owner, I'm always searching for connections to the past, and Herculaneum offers them in abundance.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Villa Signorini Events & Hotel, where we enjoyed the quiet morning ambiance before setting out. The hotel’s blend of modern comfort and proximity to historical wonders makes it an ideal base for our explorations. I made sure to double-check my camera and notebook, essential tools for capturing the essence of our journey. Erika, ever the librarian, had her nose in a guidebook, already planning our route with scholarly precision. I chuckled, knowing her enthusiasm matched my own. Today promised to be extraordinary as we planned to visit the Villa dei Papiri and Casa dell'Atrio Corinzio.

Our first stop was the Villa dei Papiri. Walking towards it, I could almost feel the weight of history pressing down, a tangible reminder of the lives interrupted by Vesuvius’s wrath. The villa, named for its extraordinary library of papyrus scrolls, is a sprawling estate that speaks volumes about the luxurious lifestyle of its inhabitants. It was rediscovered in 1750, revealing a treasure trove of ancient knowledge and art. Though much of it remains unexcavated, what has been unearthed is breathtaking.

As we wandered through the excavated sections, I tried to picture the villa in its full glory. The front of the villa stretched over 250 meters, facing the Gulf of Naples. The villa was surrounded by porticoes, vegetable gardens, vineyards and woods. The villa was possibly owned by Lucius Calpurnius Piso Caesoninus, Julius Caesar's father-in-law. Imagine the intellectual atmosphere, the philosophical discussions that might have taken place among those scrolls. The villa contained over 1,800 papyrus scrolls, now known as the Herculaneum papyri. I could envision scholars poring over texts, their voices echoing through the halls. The villa also housed a collection of at least 80 sculptures of magnificent quality, many of which are now conserved at the Naples National Archaeological Museum.

The past is never dead. It's not even past.

Erika was particularly fascinated by the story of the scrolls, marveling at the fact that this was the only surviving library from the Graeco-Roman world. She pointed out the intricate mosaic floors and the remnants of frescoes that still clung to the walls. I was struck by the sheer opulence of the villa, a testament to the wealth and sophistication of Roman society. The garden, with its porticoes and potential harbor, must have been a tranquil oasis.

Next, we ventured to the Casa dell'Atrio Corinzio, or House of the Corinthian Atrium. This house, smaller than the Villa dei Papiri but equally captivating, is named for the Corinthian columns that adorn its atrium. The house extends over 200 square meters, and is one of the most ancient domus of Herculaneum. As we stepped inside, I was immediately drawn to the impluvium, a basin designed to collect rainwater, which had been transformed into a fountain. The columns surrounding it, though weathered by time, still exuded an air of elegance.

The atrium serves as a peristyle, welcoming guests with an impluvium transformed into a fountain surrounded by Corinthian columns. The columns are plastered with white paint, giving the house its name. The living room retains its coffered ceiling, while the kitchen preserves a staircase leading to the upper floor.

I imagined a wealthy Roman family receiving guests in this very space, the sound of water gently splashing in the background. Erika noticed the well-preserved frescoes, depicting scenes of daily life and mythological figures. The walls of the house are adorned with frescoes featuring black skirting, red and black median zones, and a white frieze decorated with architectural elements. We spent a long time examining the details, marveling at the skill of the artists who had created them.

The Casa dell'Atrio Corinzio offered a more intimate glimpse into the life of a Roman family. Unlike the grand scale of the Villa dei Papiri, this house felt more personal, more relatable. It was easy to imagine children playing in the atrium, or a family sharing a meal in the dining room. The house even contained an advertisement for gladiatorial games that took place in Herculaneum on February 22. The house provided a tangible connection to the people who once called this place home.

After a morning of exploration, we were ready for lunch. We chose La Casa di Amelia, drawn by its promise of traditional Campanian cuisine in a charming setting. The restaurant, nestled on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, was a welcome respite from the crowds. As we dined beneath a canopy of trees, we savored the flavors of fresh antipasti and handmade pasta. It was the perfect way to recharge before our next adventure. Erika was particularly pleased with the local wine, declaring it a perfect complement to the meal.

As evening approached, we made our way to the Roof Garden Lounge Bar, located atop Hotel Herculaneum. From this vantage point, we were treated to panoramic views of Mount Vesuvius and the Gulf of Naples. The atmosphere was relaxed and sophisticated, with stylish décor and lush greenery. We sipped on expertly crafted cocktails as we watched the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink.

The Roof Garden Lounge Bar provided a delightful end to our day of exploration. The combination of stunning views, delicious drinks, and pleasant company made for a memorable experience. As we sat there, reflecting on the day’s discoveries, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this remarkable place.

For dinner, we decided on Ristorante Terrazza Quattroventi, known for its stunning views and exquisite cuisine. The restaurant is located at Puntaquattroventi, which also offers access to a private beach and saltwater pools. The reviews for Terrazza Quattroventi were very promising, with an average rating of 8.4/10. As we dined, we savored the flavors of Italian cuisine while enjoying the atmosphere. The service was impeccable, and the staff were friendly and accommodating. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with history, art, and culinary delights.

As we walked back to Villa Signorini Events & Hotel, Erika and I discussed our plans for tomorrow. We’re heading to Pompeii to explore the Scavi di Pompei and the House of the Faun. I’m particularly excited to see the House of the Faun, known for its impressive mosaics. Erika is eager to compare Pompeii with what we’ve seen in Herculaneum, noting the differences in preservation and excavation techniques. We also plan to have lunch at ristorante pizzeria degli scavi da Ernesto and dinner at Brancaccio Ristorante e Pizzeria. Before dinner, we will visit Pezzamificio Herculanum Di Liberato Langella & C.

Today was a reminder of the power of history to transport us to another time and place. Herculaneum, with its remarkably preserved ruins and captivating stories, has left an indelible mark on my soul. As I drift off to sleep, I dream of emperors and senators, of artists and scholars, of the ordinary people who lived and died in this extraordinary city. I look forward to sharing more of our adventures with you tomorrow.
