Vineyards and Vistas: A Day of Douro Delights

Today was a blend of cultivated beauty and raw natural splendor, a perfect encapsulation of what the Douro Valley offers. Erika and I set out with the anticipation of experiencing both the artistry of winemaking and the untamed landscapes that define this region. It’s days like these that remind me why I traded the bustling streets of Matsumoto for the serene landscapes that Europe has to offer.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurante Da Azenha. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee filled the air, a comforting start before we plunged into the day's adventures. I enjoyed a *pastel de nata* while Erika savored some local cheese. Fuelled up, we headed towards our first destination: Quinta do Panascal, part of the renowned Fonseca Port estate.

I've always been fascinated by the intricate dance between nature and human craftsmanship, and Quinta do Panascal was a perfect stage to witness this. As we drove through the winding roads leading to the Quinta, the vineyards unfolded before us like a green tapestry, clinging to the steep slopes. The October sun cast a golden hue over the landscape, making the vines glow as if lit from within. The weather was agreeable, with an average high temperature of 22.5°C, which made our outdoor explorations quite comfortable.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by our guide, who shared the history of Fonseca and Quinta do Panascal. I learned that this Quinta is one of the largest in the Douro Valley and plays a vital role in producing Fonseca's Vintage Port. The tour took us through the vineyards, where we saw the traditional grape varieties that contribute to the unique character of their Port wines. The guide explained the meticulous process of tending the vines, the harvest, and the initial stages of winemaking. As an antique shop owner, I appreciate the dedication and care that goes into preserving traditions, whether it's crafting furniture or making wine.

Inside the winery, the air was filled with the rich scent of aging wine. We saw the large wooden casks where the Port matures, slowly developing its complex flavors. The tour concluded with a tasting of Fonseca's Quinta do Panascal Vintage Port. I swirled the dark liquid in my glass, inhaling the aromas of blackcurrant and spice. The taste was a symphony of flavors – rich, velvety, with a long, warm finish. Erika, with her librarian's attention to detail, noted the subtle nuances of each sip. It was a delightful experience, deepening my appreciation for the art of winemaking.

The Douro Valley is a testament to the harmonious blend of human effort and nature's grandeur, where every vineyard tells a story of tradition, resilience, and passion.

Leaving Quinta do Panascal, we set our sights on a different kind of experience: Parque Natural do Douro Internacional. This natural park, bordering Spain, promised dramatic landscapes and diverse wildlife. The drive itself was an adventure, with winding roads offering breathtaking views of the Douro River and the rugged terrain. As we approached the park, the landscape transformed. The neatly terraced vineyards gave way to wild, untamed hills and rocky cliffs.

Parque Natural do Douro Internacional is a haven for several species of flora and fauna. As we drove into the park, I felt a sense of anticipation, hoping to catch a glimpse of the rare birds that inhabit this area. We parked the car and decided to take a hike along one of the marked trails. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of wild herbs and flowers. The views were simply stunning. The Douro River snaked through the valley below, its waters reflecting the clear blue sky. On the other side of the river, the Spanish landscape mirrored the beauty of Portugal, creating a seamless panorama of nature's artistry.

We kept our eyes peeled for the park's famous inhabitants. Although we didn't spot any wolves or wild cats, we were fortunate enough to see several species of birds, including falcons soaring high above the cliffs. Erika, with her keen eyesight, pointed out a pair of Egyptian vultures circling in the distance. It was a reminder of the incredible biodiversity that this park protects. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the power and beauty of nature, a stark contrast to the carefully curated world of my antique shop.

After a fulfilling afternoon immersed in nature, our stomachs began to rumble. We drove to Toca da Raposa for lunch, a restaurant known for its traditional Portuguese cuisine. The restaurant was nestled in the heart of the village of Ervedosa, offering picturesque views of the Douro Valley. We were greeted warmly and shown to a table overlooking the vineyards. The journey to the restaurant itself was delightful, with scenic views along the N-222 road.

The menu at Toca da Raposa was a celebration of local flavors. We started with *alheira*, a traditional Portuguese sausage, followed by *arroz de salpicão*. For the main course, I chose the roasted pork leg, while Erika opted for the beef cutlets. The portions were generous, and every dish was bursting with flavor. The roasted pork leg was tender and succulent, while the beef cutlets were perfectly seasoned and grilled. We paired our meal with a local Douro wine, a robust red that complemented the richness of the food.

As we savored our meal, we chatted with the friendly staff, learning about the history of the restaurant and their commitment to using local ingredients. It was a reminder of the importance of supporting local businesses and preserving culinary traditions. The meal was a delightful experience, leaving us feeling satisfied and content.

With the sun beginning to dip below the horizon, we decided to head back towards our accommodation, but not before making a stop at Petiscaria Douro Bar. This cozy bar offered a stunning view of the Douro River, the perfect setting for an evening drink. We ordered a couple of glasses of local wine and sat outside, watching the river flow by. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, with locals and tourists mingling and sharing stories. It was a fitting end to a day filled with exploration and discovery.

For dinner, we decided to try São LUIZ by Chef Vitor de Oliveira. The restaurant is known for its Mediterranean and Portuguese menus, and its location offers beautiful views of the Douro River. The dishes were carefully prepared with locally sourced ingredients, highlighting the region's culinary heritage. The staff was cheerful and attentive, making our dining experience truly special. Erika and I shared a few dishes, including the succulent meats and fresh seafood, each telling a story of the region's agricultural richness.

As I reflect on today’s experiences, I am struck by the diversity of the Douro Valley. From the manicured vineyards of Quinta do Panascal to the wild landscapes of Parque Natural do Douro Internacional, this region offers a feast for the senses. It’s a place where history, culture, and nature intertwine, creating a unique and unforgettable destination. And, of course, sharing it all with Erika makes it even more special.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Miradouro de São Leonardo de Galafura for panoramic views and Quinta do Pôpa for another wine experience. I am eager to see what new stories the Douro Valley has to tell. Until then, *Oyasumi nasai* (good night) from the Douro Valley.
