Join Tanaka Hiroshi and Erika as they conclude their Douro Valley adventure with stunning views and exquisite wine tastings.
Adieu, Douro Valley!
As our journey through the Douro Valley draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've shared over the past nine days. This region, with its terraced vineyards and the tranquil Douro River, has woven its way into our hearts, leaving us with memories we will cherish forever. Today, we set out to capture a few final moments of its beauty before heading back to Germany, already dreaming of our return.
Our final day began with a delightful breakfast at Cantina de Ventozelo. The morning air was crisp, carrying the scent of the nearby vineyards as Erika and I enjoyed a meal of local pastries and strong coffee. Knowing the history of the Cantina, once a place where farm workers gathered, added a layer of depth to the experience. The views from the terrace were simply breathtaking, a final panorama of the valley that had captivated us throughout our stay.

After breakfast, we set off for Quinta Nova Nossa Senhora do Carmo, a place that promised both history and exquisite wine. The drive itself was a treat, winding through the hills with the vibrant colors of autumn all around. As we approached the Quinta, the 19th-century manor house stood proudly among the vineyards, a testament to the rich heritage of the Douro.

We opted for a tour that included a tasting of some of their finest wines. As an antique shop owner, I've always appreciated the artistry and tradition that goes into creating something of lasting value, and winemaking is no exception. The sommelier shared stories of the Quinta's history, its connection to the Douro, and the meticulous process of crafting each bottle. Sipping a robust red, with hints of blackberry and cherry, I felt a deep connection to the land and its people.
Sometimes, the most profound journeys are those that allow us to savor the simple pleasures of life: good wine, good food, and the company of those we love.
Erika, with her librarian's curiosity, was particularly fascinated by the Quinta's museum, which showcased the evolution of winemaking tools and techniques over the centuries. It was a perfect blend of our interests, history and craftsmanship intertwined in the heart of the Douro Valley.
Next on our itinerary was the Miradouro de Valença do Douro, a viewpoint that promised panoramic vistas of the valley. The drive was short, but the anticipation grew with each turn. As we arrived, the view unfolded before us in all its glory. The terraced vineyards stretched as far as the eye could see, the Douro River snaking its way through the landscape like a silver ribbon. The autumn colors were in full display, painting the hills in hues of gold, red, and brown.

I set up my camera, eager to capture the scene, while Erika found a quiet spot to sit and sketch. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of earth and grapes. It was a moment of pure serenity, a chance to soak in the beauty of the Douro Valley one last time. I could see why this spot was considered a must-visit, the view was simply breathtaking.
For lunch, we had made reservations at Terraçu's Restaurant, nestled within Quinta Nova. The restaurant is known for its slow food approach to Douro ingredients, and we were eager to experience it. The setting was elegant yet relaxed, with panoramic windows offering stunning views of the valley. Chef André Carvalho's menu was a celebration of local flavors, each dish thoughtfully paired with Quinta Nova wines.

We started with smoked trout, followed by braised goat, and finished with a delicate dessert rooted in Portuguese tradition. Each course was a culinary masterpiece, a testament to the Douro's rich culinary heritage. Erika particularly enjoyed the wine pairings, noting how each glass enhanced the flavors of the food. The meal was a perfect ending to our exploration of the Douro's culinary scene.
As the afternoon waned, we decided to indulge in one last wine experience at Lado Wines - Porto & Douro Wine bar & Tastings by AVEPOD. Located in Porto, it was a bit of a drive, but we were drawn by the promise of tasting wines from small, independent producers. The bar was cozy and inviting, with a knowledgeable staff eager to share their passion for Douro wines.

We opted for a tasting that included a variety of wines and ports, each with its own unique character. The host, Maria, shared stories of the producers, their vineyards, and the traditions that shaped their wines. It was a personal and informative experience, a chance to connect with the heart of the Douro wine region. I even picked up a couple of bottles to bring back to Heidelberg, a reminder of our time in Portugal.
Dinner was at Ruby Douro Cafe and Restaurant, where we enjoyed traditional Portuguese dishes in a relaxed setting. The menu featured local specialties such as roasted loin and traditional codfish, providing a comforting and satisfying end to our day. As we savored our meal, we reminisced about the highlights of our trip, the stunning landscapes, the delicious food, and the warm hospitality of the Portuguese people.

As I sit here now, penning these thoughts, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences we've had in the Douro Valley. It's a region that has captured our hearts with its beauty, its history, and its people. While our journey may be coming to an end, the memories we've created will last a lifetime.
Tomorrow, we will begin our journey back to Heidelberg, carrying with us the spirit of the Douro. I'm already looking forward to sharing our stories and discoveries with friends and customers at my antique shop, hoping to inspire them to embark on their own adventures. Until next time, Douro Valley, adieu!
The trip has reminded me of a quote I once read by Miguel de Unamuno:
To reach port, we must sail—Sail, not tie at anchor—Sail, not drift. It encapsulates the spirit of exploration and discovery that has driven Erika and me throughout our lives. I am grateful for the opportunity to have shared this journey with her, and I look forward to many more adventures together. Perhaps next time, we'll explore the historical sites of Japan, sharing our heritage with others as we've shared the Douro with you. For now, it's time to rest and prepare for the journey home.
