A Day of Art, History, and Gastronomy

As our Tarragona adventure draws to a close, Erika and I decided to dedicate our final day to soaking in the city's modern artistic expressions, revisiting its historical roots, and indulging in one last taste of Catalan cuisine. It's amazing how a place can feel like home in just a week, and I'm already cherishing the memories we've made here.

Our morning began with a delightful breakfast at Mas Roselló Restaurant Tarragona. The ambiance was lovely, and the food was a perfect start to the day. I enjoyed a strong coffee while Erika savored some local pastries. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. I always appreciate a good breakfast; it sets the tone for the entire day, much like a well-organized antique shop sets the tone for a collector's visit.

With our appetites satisfied, we set off to the Museo de Arte Moderno de Tarragona. Housed in a collection of interconnected 18th-century houses, the museum itself is a work of art. The walls and ceilings seemed to whisper stories of the past, providing a unique backdrop to the modern art on display. As someone who spends his days surrounded by antiques, I found it fascinating to see how artists of today interpret the world around them. Erika, with her librarian's eye, was particularly drawn to the interactive exhibits. We spent a good couple of hours wandering through the galleries, discussing our favorite pieces and pondering the meaning behind the art. It's always enriching to see the world through different lenses, whether it's through the brushstrokes of a painter or the words of a novelist.

The best journey always takes us home, even when we didn't know we were missing it.
After immersing ourselves in the world of modern art, we decided to take a stroll through Camp de Mart. This urban park, located at the foot of the Roman walls, offered a serene escape from the bustling city. As we walked along the winding paths, surrounded by lush greenery and ornamental fountains, I couldn't help but feel a sense of tranquility wash over me. It reminded me of the small garden I tend to back in Heidelberg, a little piece of nature amidst the urban landscape. Erika pointed out the open-air theater-auditorium, a unique structure that blends seamlessly with the park's surroundings. It's amazing how the city has managed to integrate modern elements into its ancient foundations.

Our historical journey continued as we made our way to St. Anthony Gate. This magnificent gate, dating back to the 18th century, stands as a testament to Tarragona's rich history. As we approached the gate, I was struck by its impressive architecture, featuring intricate stonework and towering arches. It felt like stepping back in time, imagining the countless people who had passed through this portal over the centuries. Erika and I took some photos, trying to capture the essence of this historical landmark. It's moments like these that make traveling so rewarding, connecting with the past and appreciating the enduring legacy of human civilization. I found myself particularly drawn to the intricate carvings and the nearby Roman wall remains, which offered a rich tapestry of textures and shadow play. The gate frames a magnificent view of the Mediterranean Sea, creating a picturesque contrast of ancient stone against shimmering waters.

For lunch, we chose RESTAURANT BARQUET, a place known for its rice dishes. The nautical-themed dining room had a certain old-fashioned charm. We decided to try the local specialty, fried fish with toasted noodles, called fideos rossejat. The flavors were incredible, a true taste of the Mediterranean. Erika enjoyed some local oysters, while I savored the garlicky steamed mussels. It was a delightful meal, made even better by the restaurant's cozy atmosphere. We chatted about our favorite moments from the trip, reminiscing about the Roman Amphitheatre, the Tarragona Cathedral, and the charming streets of the old town. I made a mental note to try and recreate the fideos rossejat back home in Heidelberg – a little taste of Tarragona to brighten our days.

Before dinner, Erika wanted to do some shopping, so we stopped by Natura. She loves their selection of natural products and unique clothing items. I always enjoy browsing through their collection of lifestyle accessories, finding inspiration for my antique shop. Erika picked up a few small gifts for Lena, while I found a beautiful journal to record my travel memories. It's the little things like this that make a trip special, the souvenirs that remind you of the places you've been and the experiences you've shared.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Vadegust for our final dinner in Tarragona. This restaurant is known for its Mediterranean cuisine, and it did not disappoint. We started with some delicious octopus and monkfish, followed by a flavorful black rice dish. For dessert, we shared a tarte tatin and some gelato. The wine list was extensive, and the staff was incredibly friendly and efficient. The atmosphere was perfect, a quiet and elegant setting to reflect on our journey. I raised my glass to Erika, thanking her for sharing this incredible experience with me. It's not just about the places we visit, but the people we share them with that make a trip truly unforgettable.
