Day 1: First Impressions of Santorini: A Caldera of Dreams
Exploring Fira and Santorini Old Harbor: A day of breathtaking views, delicious food, and vibrant culture on this stunning island.
Arrival in Fira: A Dream Come True
r
After a long journey from Leipzig, with a layover in Athens, Hans and I finally arrived in Santorini. The moment I stepped off the plane, I was greeted by the warm Aegean air and the promise of an unforgettable adventure. As a geriatric nurse, I often tell my patients about the importance of pursuing their dreams, and here I was, living one of my own. This trip, a romantic escape with my beloved Hans, was something I had envisioned for years.

Our pre-booked rental car was waiting for us, and soon we were winding our way towards Fira, the island's capital. The drive itself was a treat, with glimpses of the azure sea and the unique volcanic landscape. Arriving in Fira, we were immediately captivated by the whitewashed buildings clinging to the cliffs, a sight that truly took my breath away. The bright sun reflecting off the white walls created a dazzling effect, making everything seem even more magical.

We checked into our lovely accommodation, Serapias Suites in Exo Gonia, a charming retreat that promised comfort and tranquility.

After settling in, we decided to dive straight into exploring Fira. The town was bustling with activity, a vibrant mix of tourists and locals going about their day. Narrow streets led us past countless shops selling everything from handmade jewelry to local wines. The air was filled with the enticing aromas of Greek cuisine, making our stomachs rumble in anticipation.

Our first stop was the iconic caldera view. Standing at the edge of the cliff, gazing out at the vast expanse of the Aegean Sea, I felt an overwhelming sense of awe. The deep blue waters contrasted sharply with the white buildings, creating a scene that seemed straight out of a postcard. Hans, ever the pragmatist, was busy snapping photos, trying to capture the beauty that surrounded us. I simply stood there, soaking it all in, etching the image into my memory.

For lunch, we chose Parea Tavern, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Greek dishes and welcoming atmosphere.

Tucked away from the main tourist drag, it felt like a hidden gem. The staff greeted us like family, and we soon felt right at home. We ordered a selection of mezes to share, including the aubergine salad, tzatziki, and tomato and cheese balls. Each dish was bursting with flavor, a testament to the fresh, local ingredients. As we savored our meal, surrounded by the sounds of laughter and chatter, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this moment.

After lunch, we ventured down to the Santorini Old Harbor.
Explore the breathtaking Santorini Old Harbor, a picturesque marina surrounded by stunning views and vibrant local culture, perfect for travelers seeking adventure.
We decided to take the cable car, a thrilling ride that offered panoramic views of the caldera. The harbor was a hive of activity, with boats coming and going, ferrying tourists to various destinations. I watched, fascinated, as the small vessels navigated the waters, each carrying its own story.
r
r
We explored the harbor, taking in the sights and sounds. The steep cliffs towering above us were a reminder of the island's volcanic past. I imagined the eruption that had shaped this landscape, a powerful force of nature that had created something so beautiful. Hans, always interested in the practical side of things, was curious about the logistics of the harbor, how it functioned as a gateway to the island.

As the afternoon wore on, we made our way back up to Fira, this time opting for the challenging hike up the 580 steps. It was a bit strenuous, but the views along the way were well worth the effort. We passed by donkeys carrying tourists, their bells jingling merrily. I couldn't help but smile, feeling a sense of camaraderie with my fellow travelers.

For dinner, we chose Naoussa restaurant, known for its traditional Greek cuisine and caldera views.

We started with the grilled octopus, tender and flavorful, followed by the moussaka, a layered dish of eggplant, potato, and ground beef covered in a rich béchamel sauce. The food was delicious, and the view was simply breathtaking. As the sun began to set, the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors, painting the whitewashed buildings in hues of orange and pink. It was a moment of pure magic, one that I will cherish forever.

After dinner, we decided to experience Fira's nightlife. We strolled along the caldera, enjoying the cool evening air. We stopped at PK Cocktail Bar, a family-run establishment with a rich history.

The bar was perched on the edge of the cliff, offering stunning views of the volcano. We ordered a couple of cocktails and settled in to enjoy the ambiance. The music was mellow, the atmosphere was relaxed, and the company was perfect.

As I sipped my drink, I reflected on our first day in Santorini. It had been a whirlwind of sights, sounds, and flavors, a sensory overload in the best possible way. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for this opportunity to explore such a beautiful place with the man I love. As we walked back to our accommodation, hand in hand, I couldn't help but wonder what adventures tomorrow would bring. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Oia and explore the Castle of Oia, Agios Nikolaos Castle, and perhaps do some shopping at Epilekton.

Our first day in Santorini was nothing short of magical. From the breathtaking caldera views to the delicious Greek cuisine, every moment was a feast for the senses. I am so grateful to be sharing this experience with my husband, Hans. As we prepare for another day of exploration, I am filled with anticipation for what this beautiful island has in store for us.
r
r
P.S. I almost forgot! I did forget to pack a power adapter, so charging my devices has been a bit of a challenge. And a light jacket would have been useful for the evenings, as the temperature does drop a bit. But these are minor inconveniences compared to the joy of being here.
