A Fond Farewell to Évora

As my journey in Évora draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences and rich history I've encountered. Today was about soaking in the last drops of Évora's unique charm, from its traditional crafts to its regal past and spiritual sanctuaries. It’s amazing how much history is packed into this relatively small city.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at SBO Sabores e Livros. I enjoyed a strong coffee and a pastel de nata, while Hans opted for a traditional Portuguese roll with cheese. It was the perfect way to fuel up for our final day of exploration. The café was bustling with locals, always a good sign, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It reminded me of the small cafes back in Khmelnytskyi, where the sense of community is just as important as the food itself.

Our first stop was the Centro de Artes Tradicionais. This center is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the traditional arts and crafts of the Alentejo region. As someone who enjoys embroidery, especially traditional Ukrainian patterns, I was eager to see what Portugal had to offer. The center was a treasure trove of intricate pottery, beautiful textiles, and other handcrafted items. I was particularly impressed by the azulejos, the traditional Portuguese tiles, with their vibrant colors and detailed designs. I even picked up a small, hand-painted tile as a souvenir, a little piece of Évora to bring back to Leipzig. I thought about Olena and how she would appreciate the craftsmanship, given her artistic eye.

Next on our itinerary was the Royal Palace of Évora. Known also as the Palace of King Manuel I, it stands as a testament to Portugal's regal history and architectural splendor. Originally a convent in the 13th century, it transformed into a royal abode under King John I. Over the centuries, kings like Afonso V, John II, and Manuel I expanded and renovated it into a stunning Renaissance palace. As we walked through what remains of the palace, I imagined the playwrights and explorers, like Gil Vicente and Vasco da Gama, who once graced these halls. It felt like stepping back in time, connecting with the cultural and political heart of Portugal’s Golden Age. Though much of the palace has been lost to time, the Galeria das Damas still stands, a testament to the palace's former glory.

After immersing ourselves in royal history, we decided to have lunch at Tua Madre. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere and served traditional Alentejo cuisine. I ordered the migas, a bread-based dish with garlic, olive oil, and pork, while my friends opted for the açorda, a soup made with bread, garlic, coriander, and poached eggs. It was a hearty and satisfying meal that gave us a taste of the local flavors. I made a mental note to try and recreate these dishes back home; Hans would surely enjoy them.

Our afternoon took a spiritual turn as we visited the Chapel of Saint Blaise. Located a bit outside the city walls, this chapel is a hidden gem known for its unique architecture and tranquil atmosphere. Built in the late 15th century, it features a blend of Gothic and Moorish influences, with crenellated walls and conical turrets. The interior was serene, adorned with azulejos and religious frescoes. What struck me most was the peaceful, wild garden surrounding the chapel, a perfect spot for quiet contemplation. I took a moment to reflect on my journey, feeling grateful for the experiences and the opportunity to explore such a beautiful and historic place.

Before dinner, I wanted to find a special memento of Évora, so we stopped by Jirau Handcraft Goods. The shop was filled with unique, locally made items, and I spent quite some time browsing the selection. I finally settled on a hand-painted ceramic bowl, its design inspired by the Alentejo landscape. It was the perfect piece to remind me of this trip every time I use it back in Leipzig.

For our final dinner in Évora, we chose Restaurante Guião. The restaurant was known for its traditional Portuguese dishes and warm, welcoming atmosphere. I ordered the black pork, a regional specialty, and it was absolutely delicious. The meat was tender and flavorful, and the accompanying potatoes were perfectly roasted. We shared a bottle of local wine and toasted to our unforgettable trip.

As the day wound down, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of contentment. Évora had captivated me with its history, culture, and charm. From the ancient Roman temple to the serene chapels and vibrant arts scene, there was something for everyone. I’m so glad I convinced my friends to join me on this adventure. Sharing these experiences with them has made it all the more special.

Tomorrow, we will be heading back to Lisbon to catch our flight to Leipzig. While I’m looking forward to returning home to my quiet life and familiar routines, I will always cherish the memories I’ve made in Évora. This trip has not only enriched my understanding of Portuguese history and culture but has also reminded me of the importance of exploring the world and connecting with new places and people.
