Discovering Orvieto's Hidden Gems
Today was a delightful exploration of Orvieto's artistic and historical treasures. Hans and I embraced the day with open hearts, ready to soak in the culture and charm of this medieval town. From the intricate sculptures at the Museo Emilio Greco to the vibrant atmosphere of Piazza della Repubblica, every moment was a new discovery.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Ristorante Pellegrini. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Italian coffee filled the air as we settled into our cozy spot. I enjoyed a simple yet satisfying breakfast of crusty bread with homemade jam, while Hans opted for a more substantial meal of scrambled eggs and crispy bacon. The friendly staff made us feel right at home, and it was the perfect way to start our day of exploration.

Museo Emilio Greco: A Sculptural Journey
After breakfast, we made our way to the Museo Emilio Greco. Located in Palazzo Soliano, right next to the Duomo, the museum houses an impressive collection of bronze works by the Sicilian artist Emilio Greco. I was particularly moved by Greco's ability to capture human emotion in his sculptures. Each piece seemed to tell a story, and I found myself lost in contemplation as I wandered through the exhibits.
Hans, ever the pragmatist, appreciated the technical skill and craftsmanship that went into each sculpture. He was fascinated by the way Greco used light and shadow to create depth and texture in his work. We both agreed that the museum was a hidden gem, offering a unique glimpse into the mind of a talented artist.
Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Piazza della Repubblica: A Historical Hub
Next on our itinerary was Piazza della Repubblica. This vibrant square has been the heart of Orvieto since Etruscan times, serving as the center of civic life. As we stepped onto the cobblestones, we were immediately struck by the energy of the place. Locals and tourists alike mingled, chatting and laughing in the warm August sun.

The square is surrounded by architectural gems, including the Town Hall and the Church of Sant'Andrea. We took some time to admire the intricate details of the buildings, imagining what life must have been like in Orvieto centuries ago. The Church of Sant'Andrea, with its ancient origins, was particularly fascinating. I learned that excavations beneath the church have revealed remains of even older structures, suggesting that this site has been a focal point for the community for millennia.
I couldn't help but imagine the bustling market days of old, with vendors hawking their wares and townsfolk exchanging news and gossip. Today, the square still hosts a market, albeit a more modern one, with stalls selling local crafts and souvenirs. It’s lovely to see how certain traditions endure through time.
Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo: A Glimpse into Medieval Power
Our exploration continued with a visit to the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo. This imposing palace, built in the late 13th century, was once the seat of the Capitano del Popolo, a representative of the people. The Palazzo stands as a testament to Orvieto's rich political history.

We learned that the palace has served various functions over the centuries, including as a residence for the Podestà and the Signori Sette. Today, it hosts cultural events and meetings, continuing its role as a center of community life. I was intrigued by the contrast between the building's stern exterior and the lively atmosphere within.
As we wandered through the palace, I couldn't help but reflect on the ebb and flow of power throughout history. It’s humbling to stand in a place where so many important decisions were made, shaping the course of Orvieto's destiny. I was interested to learn that the Palazzo also has Etruscan foundations with the letter “A” engraved on the blocks.
Shopping at La Maschere Gioielli: A Touch of Italian Elegance
No trip to Italy would be complete without a little shopping, so Hans and I decided to visit La Maschere Gioielli. This charming jewelry store, located near the Duomo, is known for its exquisite handmade jewelry and unique designs. I was immediately drawn to the intricate craftsmanship and attention to detail in each piece.

I ended up purchasing a delicate silver necklace with a small, hand-painted pendant depicting the Orvieto Duomo. It's the perfect memento of our trip, and I know I'll treasure it for years to come. Hans, ever practical, bought me a beautiful jewelry box to keep it in. It was such a thoughtful gesture, and it made the purchase even more special.
A Culinary Delight: Lunch at Trattoria Pizzeria San Michele
By this point, we had worked up quite an appetite, so we decided to stop for lunch at Trattoria Pizzeria San Michele. This family-run pizzeria is known for its delicious pizzas and friendly atmosphere. We ordered a Margherita pizza to share, along with a couple of glasses of the local Orvieto Classico wine. The pizza was simple but perfect, with a thin, crispy crust and fresh, flavorful toppings.

As we savored our meal, we chatted with the friendly staff and soaked in the lively ambiance of the restaurant. It was the perfect place to relax and recharge after a busy morning of sightseeing. I must admit, the pizza Nora also looked amazing.
Dinner at Trattoria Da Carlo: A Taste of Traditional Umbrian Cuisine
For dinner, we chose Trattoria Da Carlo, enticed by its reputation for authentic Umbrian cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a warm, rustic atmosphere. We started with a mixed appetizer of bruschetta, which was absolutely divine. For our main courses, I opted for the homemade pasta with truffle sauce, while Hans chose the grilled steak with rosemary.

Every dish was a celebration of local flavors and ingredients. The pasta was perfectly cooked, and the truffle sauce was rich and decadent. Hans raved about his steak, proclaiming it one of the best he's ever had. We finished our meal with a shared tiramisu, which was the perfect sweet ending to a wonderful day.
As we walked back to our hotel, Grand Hotel Italia, under the starlit sky, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences we had shared today. Orvieto had truly captured our hearts, and I knew that we would cherish these memories for years to come. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Giardini Comunali Di Orvieto, Vicolo degli Abbracci and the Church of Saint Dominic. I am excited to see what other hidden gems Orvieto has to offer!
