A Fond Farewell

As our enchanting Italian getaway draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've shared in Orvieto. This final day was a beautiful culmination of all the history, art, and culinary delights we've savored throughout the week. I'm excited to share the highlights of our last day exploring this charming medieval town with my dear readers.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Osteria da Mamma Angela. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff made it a perfect spot to start our day. I savored a cappuccino and a freshly baked pastry, while Hans enjoyed a hearty frittata. It's become a tradition for us to enjoy a leisurely breakfast together, setting a relaxed tone for the day ahead. As we ate, we chatted about our favorite moments from the trip.

After breakfast, we set out to explore the Polo Monumentale Colle Del Duomo. This historical complex offered a fascinating glimpse into the region's artistic heritage. The architecture was stunning, and the serene ambiance made it easy to appreciate the art. We spent a couple of hours wandering through the halls, admiring the exhibits and learning about the history behind each piece. Hans was particularly impressed with the ancient relics, while I was drawn to the exquisite artworks. It was a wonderful way to immerse ourselves in the cultural richness of Orvieto.

Next on our itinerary was the Chapel of St. Britius, nestled within the Duomo. This chapel is renowned for its magnificent frescoes by Beato Angelico and Luca Signorelli, and it truly lived up to its reputation. The vivid depictions of religious scenes were both captivating and thought-provoking. The sheer artistry and detail of the frescoes left us in awe. I found myself particularly moved by the expressive faces of the figures in Signorelli's The Last Judgment. The chapel's quiet and reflective atmosphere provided a perfect space for contemplation.

Leaving the chapel, we decided to take a ride on the Funicolare di Orvieto - Scalo. This funicular is a modern cable car that connects Orvieto Scalo with the city center. The ride itself was a treat, offering panoramic views of the surrounding Umbrian countryside. As we ascended, we marveled at the rolling hills and vineyards stretching out before us. It was a unique way to appreciate the beauty of the region. The funicular was efficient and comfortable, making the journey quick and enjoyable.

For lunch, we chose Antica Cantina, a charming restaurant known for its traditional Umbrian dishes. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the staff was incredibly friendly. We started with a selection of local cheeses and cured meats, followed by homemade pasta with truffle sauce. The flavors were rich and authentic, showcasing the best of Umbrian cuisine. Hans particularly enjoyed the house wine, which was a perfect complement to our meal. The slow service, mentioned in some reviews, was not a problem for us; we were happy to savor each course and enjoy the leisurely pace.

After lunch, we strolled through the town, eventually finding ourselves at Il Mago di Oz, a delightful craft store. This shop was filled with unique, handmade items, from ceramics to textiles. I was immediately drawn to the intricate designs and vibrant colors of the ceramics. We spent some time browsing, admiring the craftsmanship and chatting with the friendly owner. I ended up purchasing a beautiful hand-painted bowl as a souvenir, a perfect reminder of our time in Orvieto. Hans found a quirky wooden toy for our grandson, which he was thrilled about.

As the afternoon waned, we decided to indulge in some shopping. Orvieto's charming streets are lined with boutiques and artisanal shops, offering a wide array of goods. I was on the lookout for some traditional Italian linens, while Hans wanted to find a good bottle of local olive oil. We explored several shops, enjoying the vibrant atmosphere and the friendly shopkeepers. I found a beautiful linen tablecloth with intricate embroidery, and Hans discovered a bottle of olive oil from a local producer. These purchases were more than just souvenirs; they were tangible reminders of our experiences in Orvieto.

For our final dinner in Orvieto, we chose La Buca di Bacco di Edy, a restaurant known for its delicious pasta and welcoming ambiance. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a warm and friendly atmosphere. We started with a bruschetta, followed by the restaurant's signature pasta dish. The flavors were incredible, and the pasta was cooked to perfection. Hans ordered a seafood dish, which he declared to be one of the best he'd ever had. To finish, we shared a tiramisu, a classic Italian dessert that was the perfect ending to our meal.

As we enjoyed our dinner, we reflected on our time in Orvieto. We had explored ancient ruins, admired stunning art, and savored delicious food. But more than that, we had created memories that would last a lifetime. This trip had been a wonderful opportunity for us to reconnect and rediscover our love for each other and for travel. I thought about how different this was from my life back in Khmelnytskyi, Ukraine, where life was much simpler, yet filled with its own set of joys and challenges. Moving to Germany with Hans had opened up a world of possibilities, and I was grateful for the experiences we had shared.

After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll through the town, savoring the last moments of our trip. The streets were quiet and peaceful, illuminated by the soft glow of streetlights. We stopped at a gelateria for a scoop of gelato, a perfect way to end our evening. As we walked back to the Grand Hotel Italia, I felt a sense of gratitude for this incredible experience. Orvieto had captured our hearts with its charm, beauty, and rich history.
